How town councils could be scrapped

BCP Council says the creation of new town councils could be reversed—but only through a formal process.

Three new councils in Bournemouth, Broadstone and Poole were approved in 2025 following a consultation.

Despite around 74 per cent of respondents opposing the plans, councillors voted to go ahead with the changes.

To undo the decision, a new Community Governance Review would need to be carried out.

This can be triggered either by the council itself or through a public petition.

The number of signatures required depends on the size of the local electorate, ranging from 250 people to at least 10 per cent of voters in larger areas.

Reviews can consider changes such as abolishing councils, altering boundaries or changing electoral arrangements.

The process involves multiple consultation stages and must be completed within 12 months.

Officials say the system is designed to ensure local communities have a say in how they are governed.
