BCP names new youth parliament members
Young people across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have chosen their new Youth Parliament representatives.
Polly Homan and Yakub Maatoug were elected at a ceremony at Winton Life Centre on Saturday 21 March, with Chelzin George and Isla Campbell-Mace selected as deputies after voting by 5492 students from schools across BCP.
The new team will represent young people at local, regional and national level, taking part in the annual sitting of the UK Youth Parliament, the House of Commons debate, council scrutiny meetings and events designed to support campaigns and community engagement.
Polly said she was “over the moon” after being elected and wants to highlight how expensive transport can be for young people in BCP, while Yakub said he was “absolutely honoured” and plans to focus on sexual crime, mental health provision and job accessibility.
Certificates for the best turnout went to Bourne Academy, Cornerstone Academy and Bournemouth School, while Councillor Richard Burton said the level of campaigning and voting had been “inspiring to see”.
