Council backs ten year specialist housing strategy

BCP Council has approved a new ten year strategy aimed at improving specialist and supported housing across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

The plan focuses on increasing the supply of good quality, accessible and self contained homes to support people with additional needs while promoting independence and stronger community connections.

The strategy was developed with feedback from residents, carers and professionals and was discussed during a Cabinet meeting on March four. The council will work with health services, housing providers and voluntary organisations to strengthen support for people of all ages.

Councillor Kieron Wilson said thousands of residents rely on supported or specialist housing across the area, including older people who want to stay independent, adults with disabilities or long term conditions, people who have experienced homelessness and young people leaving care.

He said: “Every one of them deserves not just a roof but the right home in the right place with the right support.”

Councillor David Brown said the strategy is important for adults with physical disabilities, severe mental illness and learning disabilities. He said changing demographics in the conurbation mean the demand for specialist housing will continue to grow.

Councillor Sandra Moore added that good quality housing can reduce pressure on health and social care services while strengthening support networks for residents and their families.

Cabinet members unanimously approved the strategy.
