Sale approved for Christchurch care home

BCP Council has approved plans to sell the vacant Queensmead Care Home site in Christchurch town.

The forty bed care home, built in the nineteen seventies, has been unused for four years after residents were moved to other accommodation when a storm caused major roof damage and operator Care South later surrendered its lease.

In twenty twenty three, plans to turn the building into a twenty bed hostel for homeless people were withdrawn after hundreds of nearby residents raised concerns about the proposal and its potential impact on the surrounding neighbourhood.

A report to BCP Council’s cabinet said the building no longer meets modern care standards and that its layout, condition and planning limits mean alternative council uses are not viable, while the empty site continues to create security and holding costs.

Councillor Andy Martin said: “This has taken a long time. I remember a meeting about four years ago with about two hundred residents who were concerned about the future of it. Residents will no doubt be pleased this is going to be disposed of.”

Cabinet members unanimously approved the disposal of the site on the open market, although the future use of the property and the eventual sale value have not yet been confirmed.
