Major investment boosts local play spaces
Playgrounds across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being resurfaced, repaired and refitted as part of a long-term investment programme.
More than 120 sites are included in the £4.4 million Plan for Play strategy, which focuses on restoring and upgrading facilities in areas with the greatest demand, while setting out a phased schedule of improvements over several years.
Recent work has seen Kingston Road play park in Poole resurfaced and new swings installed at Churchill Gardens in Boscombe, bringing both spaces back into regular use. New equipment has also been fitted at Seafield Gardens and Moordown Recreation Ground by internal parks teams.
Designs are now being developed for refurbishments at Noyce Gardens, Mallard Road and Muscliff, with further full replacements planned at Treasure Island, Anchor Close and Kings Park during the next phase of investment.
Repairs influenced by public consultation have already taken place at Haskell’s Rec, Green Road, Littlemoor Avenue and Seafield Road, while Queen’s Park has undergone a larger refurbishment that includes a new fort and improved accessibility features.
Councillor Andy Hadley said a revised improvement plan has been published outlining where major upgrades will take place and during which phase of the programme. He said the aim is to provide clear, playground-by-playground updates so residents know what is happening locally.
Councillor Sandra Moore said families are most concerned about the spaces they use regularly, adding that regular updates will be shared as work progresses so communities can follow developments in their neighbourhoods.
The programme is described as the largest single investment in play areas across the three towns, with teams of landscape architects, project managers and operational staff continuing to inspect equipment, carry out essential repairs and work with designers and suppliers on future layouts.
Residents can keep track of progress through the council’s green spaces channels and newsletters as further projects move forward throughout 2026.
