Bournemouth and Poole cycle routes set for upgrades

BCP Council has allocated £2.9million to improve cycle routes and pedestrian crossings across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

The investment follows confirmation from Active Travel England in December 2025 that the council’s capability rating has increased from level two to level three, allowing access to a multi year funding settlement.

As part of a four year programme, the council has been allocated £2.2million in capital funding until 2029/30 and £705,869 in revenue funding until 2028/29. A total of £11.1million is proposed to be spent on active travel over the next four years to improve pavements and cycle routes, plan network routes and run local activities.

New crossings are proposed for Turbary Park Avenue, Kinson Road, Canford Cliffs Road, Bournemouth Road and a link between Iford Old Bridge and Oak Avenue. The first phase of improvements to the walking and cycling route through Poole Park between Whitecliff Road and Parkstone Road will also begin.

Further design work includes a cycle lane at Poole Lane, a new crossing near Mandale Road and improvements at University Roundabout. Funding will also support an accessible cycling hub pilot for children with SEND and projects at Twynham, Poole High and schools on East Way.

The proposals will be discussed at the Transport Advisory Group on 25 February and by cabinet on 4 March.
