Stage and screen star Alison Steadman visits Poole
An award-winning actor shared stories from six decades on stage and screen in Poole.
Alison Steadman appeared at Lighthouse as part of its PIPELINE series supporting new writing for studio drama, speaking to around 100 people and offering insights into performance, scripts and the craft of bringing characters to life.
Reflecting on her career, she said she had “made a living out of pretending to be someone else”, recalling early impressions of Hylda Baker and stressing that strong writing remains central to any production, adding that without a good script “you’re nowhere”.
She told the audience she can often hear a character’s voice on the page and said it frustrates her when words are altered, explaining that scripts are carefully shaped by writers and should be respected in performance.
The discussion, chaired by writer Ed Viney, touched on work including Gavin and Stacey, Abigail’s Party, Shirley Valentine and Nuts In May, filmed in Dorset at locations such as Corfe Castle and Lulworth Cove, with further PIPELINE events planned at Lighthouse this spring.
