New Dorset tool cuts home energy costs

Dorset residents can now get tailored advice to help make homes warmer and cheaper to run.

Dorset Council has launched an online tool called Homewise, developed by Energy Saving Trust, giving homeowners and landlords personalised guidance on energy improvements based on their property, using postcode information and a small number of questions.

The tool produces a downloadable action plan within minutes, suggesting measures such as insulation, improved lighting or solar panels, and explaining which options are most suitable for the home and how they could reduce energy use.

It also outlines possible savings and practical next steps, offering impartial, fact checked advice without requiring residents to create an account or provide personal details.

Councillor Nick Ireland said Homewise helps people clearly understand which improvements could work best for their property, adding that the main benefit for households is a warmer and more affordable home.

Around half of homes in Dorset currently have an energy efficiency rating of EPC C or below, meaning they lose heat quickly and are more expensive to keep warm, an issue the new tool aims to address.

Energy Saving Trust business development manager Laura Atkinson said personalised advice helps residents make informed choices about improving comfort and reducing energy use.

The launch forms part of Dorset Council’s Home Habitats campaign, which encourages residents to improve energy efficiency at home.
