Christchurch leisure centre plans agreed

Plans to expand leisure facilities in Christchurch have been approved, paving the way for new investment at Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre that aims to broaden access to fitness and activity for local residents.

The centre, which is owned and run by BCP Council, is the only council-operated leisure site in the town and currently includes swimming pools, a gym, football pitches, squash courts and an indoor cycling studio, but lacks a purpose-built space for exercise classes.

An independent review identified the absence of a dedicated studio as a limiting factor, with sessions currently relying on squash courts and the sports hall, reducing flexibility and capacity within the existing programme.

Introducing the proposal, Councillor Richard Herrett said the expansion supports wider public health aims, including GP referral routes, rehabilitation support and expanded activities for children, adults and people with additional needs.

Some concerns were raised around timing and budget priorities, with Councillor Patrick Canavan questioning whether the project should proceed ahead of wider financial scrutiny.

Responding, Councillor Jeff Hanna said the scheme is expected to generate sufficient income to cover borrowing costs, while Councillor David Brown described the long-term return as a clear benefit for residents.

Cabinet members voted unanimously to approve the plans, which will next be considered by the audit and governance committee today.
