RNLI stories of courage on display
A free exhibition marking the RNLI’s Second World War story opens at Lighthouse Poole today.
Running until Saturday 28 February, it’s sharing how volunteer crews continued saving lives at sea during some of the most challenging moments in history.
The display explores experiences across the regions, including Ireland’s neutral stance, the occupation of the Channel Islands and Poole’s connection to Dunkirk.
The exhibition features rarely viewed artwork and heritage items that reveal the pressures crews faced while continuing their lifesaving work. Paintings showing rescues at sea and portraits of key RNLI figures are included, with several pieces undergoing conservation ahead of the launch. Visitors will also see items such as a compass and signal lamp that went to Dunkirk, offering a direct link to wartime operations.

Young visitors can follow a free activity trail, alongside videos, an audio booth and a dress up area designed to help bring the stories to life. A range of free events will also run during the six-week exhibition, including a walking tour highlighting Poole’s RNLI connections, hearing from a family member saved during the Second World War and opportunities to meet current crew.
Hayley Whiting, Heritage and Archive Manager at the RNLI, said the exhibition focuses on the remarkable experiences of those connected to major wartime moments, adding that the bravery of their crews continues to inspire the charity today. Martha Earley, Creative Engagement Manager at Lighthouse Poole, said the venue is pleased to support organisations sharing Poole’s story as the area reflects on the anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
The exhibition and associated events are made possible through a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant awarded to the RNLI to support research and the sharing of stories from the period. Visitors with connections to the RNLI’s wartime history are invited to contribute their stories.
