Amber alert chills east Dorset

An amber Cold-Health Alert is now in place for Dorset and the South West, with health leaders warning of increased risks for vulnerable people during several days of very low temperatures.

The alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office, starts at 8pm today and runs until 10am on Tuesday, covering the South West, as conditions are expected to place extra strain on health and care services.

Officials say cold weather can raise the risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections, particularly among people aged sixty five and over, those with existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, and groups such as people sleeping rough, prompting advice to take practical steps to stay safe.

Dr Elizabeth Smout, Consultant in Health Protection at UKHSA South West, said it was vital to check in on friends, family and neighbours who may be most at risk, adding that forecast temperatures could have a serious impact on health over the coming days.

People are being encouraged to keep rooms they use most well heated, reduce draughts, wear several layers of clothing, keep bedroom windows closed and ensure they have enough food and medication at home, while also checking forecasts regularly.

Further guidance advises people who are eligible to be vaccinated against flu and COVID nineteen, and to seek medical help if needed by contacting NHS one one one, or calling nine nine nine in an emergency.
