Roadworks for Westover Road planned
Westover Road in Bournemouth will see four months of roadworks early next year as part of efforts to improve bus travel.
Pavements, pedestrian crossings and bus shelters will be rebuilt from January 12 with the project running until late April as part of BCP Council’s plans to improve bus travel and accessibility across the town centre.
The work forms part of the council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, which aims to make bus journeys more reliable and easier to use by upgrading passenger facilities, improving safety and prioritising buses on busy routes.
On the southern side of Westover Road, the footway will be levelled and widened, paving will be re laid and the street layout adjusted to improve access for pedestrians, including those with mobility needs. Pedestrian crossings will also be upgraded, with the crossing outside the Pavilion set to receive new smart signalling technology.
New larger bus shelters will be installed, featuring real time travel information and CCTV, alongside improvements to signage and street lighting. Three old tree stumps will be removed, while all remaining trees will be kept.
The project will be delivered in three phases, moving west from the Pavilion car park towards Gervis Place, with lane closures, parking suspensions, relocated taxi ranks and temporary pedestrian routes in place throughout.
Further disruption is expected later in the year, when a full road closure is planned to resurface the street between Bath Road roundabout and Gervis Place, alongside additional junction and bus stop improvements.
