Police advice for drivers at Christmas
Renewed calls for safer driving ahead of Christmas are being made by officers in Dorset.
Dorset Police says its roads policing teams have attended a number of fatal and serious crashes, with officers continuing to investigate the full circumstances while supporting those affected, as concerns grow about risky decisions made by some motorists at busy times of year.
The force has highlighted the fatal five as the biggest causes of serious harm on local roads, including drink and drug driving, excessive or inappropriate speed, failing to wear a seatbelt, driver distraction such as mobile phone use, and dangerous or careless driving, all linked to errors of judgement.
Drivers are being urged to take time over manoeuvres, avoid distractions, wear seatbelts, stick to speed limits and never drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs, particularly as more people travel to social events and family gatherings.
Inspector Lee Turner from the roads policing team said officers “remain with those very sadly affected” and stressed that “a poor choice made in a split second can have catastrophic consequences that can impact many families”.
He added that every driver has a responsibility not just for themselves, but for passengers and other road users, urging people to only drive when confident they can do so safely.
