Bournemouth retains Purple Flag award
Bournemouth Town Centre has retained its Purple Flag accreditation for the fifteenth consecutive year.
The Purple Flag scheme, run by the Association of Town and City Management, celebrates excellence in evening and night-time destinations. It assesses a wide range of factors between 5pm and 5am, including safety, management, entertainment, and cultural activity.
The renewal, achieved following an independent assessment, was led by Bournemouth Town Centre BID with support from BCP Council, Dorset Police, Townwatch, Bournemouth Pastors, Bournemouth University, Morebus and others.
Key strengths in Bournemouth’s submission included strong local partnerships, innovative ideas and coordinated efforts to maintain a welcoming town centre.
Victoria Sheppard, Secretary of Townwatch and Night Time Economy Co-ordinator for the BID, said the continued success reflects “even stronger links between businesses, police and the council working together to support a safe and successful town centre.”
Councillor Kieron Wilson, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at BCP Council, said the recognition “shows Bournemouth as a place where residents and visitors can feel safe and welcome on an enjoyable night out.”
The accreditation also praised collaborative systems such as SentrySIS, which allows businesses and police to share information quickly and efficiently.
Bournemouth is one of 100 destinations around the world to hold Purple Flag status, from major cities to small market towns, all recognised for balancing vibrancy with safety after dark.
