Queen’s Park play area reopens after refit

Children in Bournemouth can once again enjoy the Queen’s Park play area following a major refurbishment that has breathed new life into the popular green space.

The redesigned area includes a repaired fort structure made from recycled plastic and groyne timbers, a new climbing frame, and replacement swings. Accessibility has also been improved with a repaired ramp leading to the play and café facilities.

Around 450,000 recycled plastic bottles were used to create the new decking, while felled trees have been repurposed into balance beams. The much-loved wobble bridge has also made a welcome return.

The improvements were made possible through a £73,000 grant from Veolia Environmental Trust’s Landfill Communities Fund, alongside funding from the council’s Plan for Play initiative.

Councillor Sandra Moore said the project highlights the value of teamwork, adding that play offers vital opportunities for children to learn and grow outside the classroom.

Councillor Alasdair Keddie said the transformation shows what can be achieved when the community and council work together to improve local spaces.

An official launch event will be held at 10am on 28 October, with families invited to come and explore the new facilities.
