Liberal Democrat MP Vikki Slade has welcomed the scrapping of Ofwat, calling it a major step towards ending sewage pollution in Mid Dorset and North Poole.
She said the decision follows growing public concern about sewage being released into rivers and coastal waters, including a recent incident in the River Stour at Eye Bridge, where people reportedly fell ill and dead fish were seen in the water.
Vikki Slade said many residents were fed up with excuses and wanted urgent action to restore the health of local rivers and beaches.
Replacing Ofwat and introducing tougher regulation of water companies was part of the Liberal Democrat manifesto at the last General Election.
She said the current system had failed to protect the environment, pointing to rising bills, executive bonuses, and water company debts of over £60 billion as signs that reform was needed.
She thanked local residents for their support, saying pressure from the community had helped to drive change.
The MP is now calling on the government to urgently establish a new, properly resourced regulator with the powers to hold companies to account.
She said she would continue working to reduce sewage spills, lower water bills, and protect local rivers, harbours and beaches.
