Poole’s Scaplen’s Court welcomes Salt Pig café in museum revamp

A new café from local hospitality business Salt Pig has opened at Scaplen’s Court in Poole’s Old Town, forming part of a wider redevelopment of the historic site.

The café, named The Old Town Salt Pig, brings local food and a relaxed atmosphere to the medieval building’s courtyard and indoor spaces. It is the first time Scaplen’s Court has been open to the public year-round.

The Salt Pig, run by Becky and James Warren, began in Wareham in 2008 and is known for its focus on sustainability, local produce and reducing food miles. Visitors can now enjoy the café’s well-known quiches, salads and sausage rolls in the walled garden, inside, or to take away.

Poole Museum’s interim director Jaine Fitzpatrick said the partnership brings together “heritage and hospitality” to create a new destination for locals and visitors.

Scaplen’s Court and Garden, owned by BCP Council and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, has undergone work to improve access, including a new entrance and a lift. A series of public events and tours is now under way as part of a phased reopening, with the main Poole Museum site to follow later this year.
