More people in Bournemouth will be able to access help when feeling vulnerable in public as the Safe Places scheme expands across the area.
There are currently 152 Safe Places in operation across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, based in cafés, shops, libraries and other public venues.
Staff at these locations are trained to offer support, including contacting a trusted person or emergency services if needed.
First launched locally in 2010 by People First Forum and YMCA’s Chatterboxes project, the scheme was originally aimed at people with learning disabilities and neurodiversity. It is now being widened to help anyone who feels at risk, regardless of age, gender or background.
Councillor Kieron Wilson, Vice-Chair of Safer BCP, said the scheme promotes inclusivity and offers people reassurance when they are out and about.
Local businesses are being invited to join the initiative, with People First Forum offering training and providing a window sticker to show they are part of the network. Updated training ensures staff are prepared to support a wider range of situations.
The expansion is part of Safer BCP’s ongoing efforts to make the area more inclusive and safe for everyone.
