A tribal dance troupe from Tripura in Northeast India has performed for the first time outside their country during a cultural visit to Bournemouth University.
The group was part of a wider delegation led by Mr Pradyot Bikram Manikya, Head of the Royal Family of Tripura and Chairman of the Advisory and Administrative Reforms Committee. Their visit formed part of India Week, which celebrates cultural and economic ties between India and the UK.
Tripura is home to 19 distinct indigenous tribes, each with its own traditions and languages. The performers shared a traditional dance with students and staff at Bournemouth University, using instruments from their region to present elements of spiritual and everyday life.
The visit was hosted by the university’s Global Engagement team and organised by Bridge India. Vice-Chancellor Professor Alison Honour welcomed the delegation and said she was keen to explore opportunities for future collaboration.
Mr Manikya described the moment as historic for the people of Tripura. He said, “This visit is about bringing the stories, traditions, and dreams of the indigenous people of Tripura to a global audience.”
Organiser Pratik Dattani said, “The reception from Bournemouth was absolutely wonderful. This was a one-of-a-kind opportunity for these dancers and we’re pleased Bournemouth could host them.”
