Dorset residents urged to reuse and recycle their electricals

A new scheme to reduce the amount of electrical waste is being launched in Dorset.

Litter Free Dorset’s Electrical Reuse Project will collect, repair and redistribute unwanted or broken small household electricals.

Residents in Wimborne, Dorchester, Weymouth, Blandford and Sherborne can book free doorstep collections of small electricals, to be donated for repair.

All doorstep collections can be booked via the Litter Free Dorset website at www.litterfreedorset.co.uk/recycle-your-electricals.

Any items that cannot be repaired will be recycled.

From this month, repaired electricals will be made available to residents at events taking place locally.

Litter Free Dorset is keen to maintain the same spirit as the Dorset Council ‘Give or Take’ Days where the repaired electricals will be given away for free to those that attend the events.

Electrical recycling will also be available at the events.

It is hoped that over 56,000 households across the community will support the project which is launched in collaboration with Dorset Repair Cafés.

The initiative is one of over 60 UK projects funded by Material Focus, the not for profit organisation leading the Recycle Your Electricals campaign.

It has provided £48,074 to support the project.

All the planned Litter Free Dorset events and activity will run alongside existing other community events as part of a wider local initiative being created called the Dorset Repair Network.

The network will help to promote all events and encourage a wider culture of recycling, reuse and repair across the county.

Emma Teasdale, Litter Free Dorset Coordinator said, “We want to make it as accessible and as convenient as possible for people to repair and reuse small electricals, via a combination of in-person events and free home collection services for small electricals.”
