Majority of pupils starting a first, primary or middle school in the local area get their first choice

Families in BCP and east Dorset are finding out which schools their children will join in September with the majority getting their choice.

From today, parents and carers will be able to check their application to see whether they have been successful.

The majority (99 per cent) of children due to start primary school or due to transfer to a junior or middle school in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) this September have been offered a place at one of their preferred schools.

And almost 95 per cent of applicants in the Dorset Council area have been offered their first choice of primary school for reception.

Over 98 per cent have been offered their middle school of choice.

Cllr Clare Sutton, Dorset Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, said: “We know how important school choice is for families, and I am delighted that most families in the Dorset Council area have successfully secured their first-choice primary school.

“As these very young students get ready to start their educational journey this September, I wish them all the best for a successful and fulfilling experience.”

Councillor Richard Burton, BCP Council portfolio holder for children and young people, said: “Choosing the right school for a child is an important decision for families.

“That’s why we’re pleased that we have been able to offer a high percentage of families one of their preferred schools for their children to attend from September.

“We also recognise that some families may have questions regarding their child’s placement, and I would encourage them to contact the BCP Council School Admissions Team for help and advice.”
