A group of eight Bournemouth Water staff have raised more than £3,000 for Alzheimer’s Society after completing a challenging 12-mile coastal walk from Lulworth Cove to Weymouth.
The trek, which included over 2,700 feet of ascent, was part of a national event organised by Collaboration Network, with more than 120 people walking in eight locations across the UK.
The total distance covered by all participants was 98 miles, symbolising the 982,000 people in the UK living with Alzheimer’s disease.
Jamie McDonald, Head of Billing and Recovery at Bournemouth Water and leader of the South West walk, said the route was demanding, with the first four miles testing everyone’s endurance. He explained that knowing they were supporting a good cause helped the team persevere through the tough conditions.
Despite the difficulty, all Bournemouth Water colleagues completed the walk, raising £3,070 for Alzheimer’s Society. Jamie said the challenge was a way to help raise awareness and funds for those affected by dementia, and also an opportunity to enjoy the local countryside.
The nationwide fundraiser surpassed its original target, raising over £24,000 for the charity so far. Will Archer, Managing Director of Collaboration Network, said the event highlighted the challenges faced by people living with dementia and the importance of supporting them and their families.
