Council housing rent increase

Council housing rents in Bournemouth and Poole are set to increase by up to four point eight per cent from April, affecting social and affordable homes across the two towns.

Local authorities must review rent levels each year and can only apply increases in line with government policy. For the twenty twenty six to twenty seven financial year, councils in England are allowed to raise rents by up to four point eight per cent, based on the Consumer Price Index with an additional allowance.

The changes apply only to Bournemouth and Poole, as housing association properties cover Christchurch. Across the two towns there are more than nine thousand rented homes, alongside leasehold and low cost home ownership properties. All property types, including sheltered housing, would see the same percentage increase.

Rents for garages, bases and parking plots would also rise. Bournemouth and Poole Old Town would see increases in line with housing rents, while other parts of Poole would see a higher increase for these facilities.

A report to councillors says the changes would help maintain the council’s housing stock, support services for residents and aid longer term financial planning. The council’s cabinet is due to consider the housing revenue account budget in early February.
