Moonfleet comes to Bournemouth stage

Moonfleet is coming to Bournemouth in a new stage production at Palace Court Theatre.

AUB Theatre Productions is presenting a physical reimagining of J Meade Falkner’s Dorset adventure from Thursday 14 May to Saturday 16 May, bringing the story of smuggling, hidden crypts and secret diamonds to the stage.

Set in the mid 18th century in Fleet, near Weymouth, the story follows young orphan John Trenchard into the world of “free trade”, the hunt for Blackbeard Mohune’s cursed diamond and the history of Dorset’s coast.

The production is directed by Tamsin Fessey, who grew up in Dorchester and trained at the International Lecoq School in Paris. She has also performed in the National Theatre’s War Horse.

Students from AUB’s Acting, Costume, Make-up and Creative Writing courses are working with industry professionals on the production.

Catie Ironmonger, a BA Acting student, plays several roles. She said the process had opened her eyes to “local history” and added: “I can’t wait to share it.”

Tamsin said bringing Moonfleet to Palace Court Theatre was “a homecoming in more ways than one”.

She said the production uses movement and original music to bring “the Mohune ghosts and the crashing waves of the Dorset coast to life”.

Moonfleet is at Palace Court Theatre in Hinton Road, Bournemouth, from Thursday 14 May to Saturday 16 May.
