Hundreds of electric vehicle chargers coming

BCP Council is making significant progress in reducing emissions by installing hundreds of new electric vehicle chargers and restoring local peatland.

The council, in partnership with Connected Kerb, is rolling out 564 fast dual socket electric vehicle chargers across the area, aiming to make zero emission driving more accessible for residents.

Collaboration with Southampton University is underway to monitor air pollutants around schools, supporting the School Streets programme, which encourages families to walk or cycle rather than drive during school drop-off and pick-up times.

Environmental efforts extend to Canford Heath, where 37 hectares of peatland have been restored to wetland. This project helps lock away carbon, lowers wildfire risk, and encourages the return of rare species to the area.

Tree planting continues to be a priority, with over £64,000 in funding secured to increase street tree cover in neighbourhoods with limited greenery. Emissions from council housing have dropped by 14 per cent, while other leased buildings have seen a 23 per cent reduction.

Councillor Andy Hadley said the council is committed to achieving clean air ahead of the legal target in 2040. “Cleaning up the air we breathe benefits us all and helps to boost our local economies and health,” Andy said.

Residents are being encouraged to walk or cycle for short journeys, and a one-day discounted bus travel offer is available to promote public transport use.
