Cllr Mike Greene, BCP Council’s Portfolio Holder for Sustainability and Transport said: “Journeys by bus and bike are stress-free, low-cost and environmentally friendly ways of travelling this Christmas. If you can, why not leave the car at home and jump on a bus or grab a Beryl bike to visit the brilliant Bournemouth Christmas Tree Wonderland, Christchurch’s Yuletide Festival or Poole’s new Christmas Maritime Light Festival.”

Phil Ellis, Beryl CEO and co-founder, said: “We know that December can be a busy time for town centres and we hope our offer will encourage people to leave the car at home and use our bikes as a cheaper and more sustainable alternative.

Nikki Honer, Go South Coast’s Head of Marketing said: “We hope our festive ‘five for a fiver’ group offer will help families with the cost of living and congestion in our towns in the run up to Christmas. Officers continuing to carry out searches for missing 39 year old Leanne Chambers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Leanne was last seen in the Boscome area on Tuesday evening and is described as five feet five inches tall and of slim build with long blonde hair and tattoos on both shoulders.

by Roy Martin December 13, 2022
written by Roy Martin

New Road around West Parley is congested in both directions between the Parley Cross Roundabout and the Northbourne Roundabout due to emergency roadworks.

Temporary traffic lights have been installed on the A347 near the River Stour Bridge and there are delays of around 30 minutes reported.

As a result, the B3073 Christchurch Road from the airport is heavily congested westbound, Whitelegg Way northbound, and New Road from Ferndown are also busy.

Elsewhere this evening, the roadworks on the Christchurch bypass continue to cause delays on the approach on Barrack Road and Fairmile Road, whilst Canford Way has its usual rush-hour delays eastbound.

13, 737 South West Water have a burst mains pipe at New Road Parley and have put up two way lights which are causing delays of 30 minutes each way to the 13 and 737 services. We are doing all we can to keep the services running. ^JB

Bill Foley’s company takes ownership of AFC Bournemouth

by Roy Martin December 13, 2022
written by Roy Martin

Bill Foley has completed his takeover of AFC Bournemouth.

He’s appointed himself as the new Chairman of the club says he and his partners are committed to increased investment in the first team as well as the academy and fan experience at Vitality Stadium.

Bill had attended the Cherries’ victory over Leicester City in October ahead of completing the deal, which has now been ratified by the Premier League.

A businessman and philanthropist, Bill also has an extensive background in sports including tremendous success as the founder and owner of the National Hockey League’s Vegas Golden Knights, the first major league sports team in Las Vegas.

Bill and his partners are committed to providing the investment to sustain and build upon AFC Bournemouth’s recent accomplishments, which includes returning to the Premier League in 2022/23, where the Cherries have spent six of the last eight seasons.

Bill is committed to increased investment in AFC Bournemouth’s first team as well as the academy and fan experience at Vitality Stadium, on top of immediately beginning construction of a state-of-the-art training centre and increasing financial commitment to the AFC Bournemouth women’s team and girls’ teams.

Assuming the role of Chairman with immediate effect, Bill will be attending the club’s next home match, against Crystal Palace on 31 December. Having also purchased a home in the local area, Bill reaffirms his commitment to the football club and surrounding community.

“I have tremendous respect for the passion and support the Bournemouth community shows for this club and believe that connection to the community is the foundation for success of any sports team,” Bill said.

“We will move forward with an ‘always advance, never retreat’ approach that has defined all of my endeavours. I am committed to work with the best football and business minds available to enhance player development, facilities, and the fan experience to put AFC Bournemouth in the best possible position to succeed.”

Maxim moves on after 11 years as AFC Bournemouth’s owner, a run which included the club’s ascension from League One to the Premier League in less than five seasons.

Bill added: “Without the belief and financial backing of Maxim and his family, AFC Bournemouth might well have ceased to exist. Maxim’s support and involvement has allowed the club to establish itself as a top-flight team. We’d like to thank him for his co-operation throughout the process and praise his hard work whilst owner of the club. We wish him well as he focusses on his other business endeavours.”

The minority ownership group is led by award-winning actor, director and producer Michael B. Jordan and Nullah Sarker (The Players Tribune, Davis Cup). AFC Bournemouth is Michael’s first foray into professional sports ownership, as he and Nullah will work closely with Bill in areas including global marketing and internationalisation of the club.

Bill’s sports background is highlighted by the performance of the Golden Knights, who debuted in the 2017/18 season with the most successful campaign for an expansion franchise in any sport, reaching the Stanley Cup Final. The first major league professional team in Las Vegas, it has enjoyed perennial on-and-off-ice success and spawned growth in Vegas as a professional sports hub and an exploding youth hockey market.

Bill has also led the construction of multiple sports venues in the Las Vegas Valley, including The Dollar Loan Center, City National Arena, and Lifeguard Arena. Outside of sports, Bill has successfully founded, grown, and operated numerous ventures in the financial and technology sectors, hospitality, and vineyards.

Bill’s philanthropic efforts include the Vegas Golden Knights Foundation, the Folded Flag Foundation, and the Foley Family Charitable Foundation, all of which are committed to giving back to the community.

Residents now moved in to BCP Council’s Moorside Road development

by Roy Martin December 12, 2022
written by Roy Martin

Christmas decorations are starting to appear at Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council’s new development of family housing, as residents move in ahead of the festive season.

BCP Council has recently completed the Moorside Road development of 14 four-bedroom affordable homes in the West Howe area of Bournemouth.

The homes have already been let to local families in housing need through the BCP Home Choice service and each property is now occupied.

All the homes are fitted with solar panels to increase energy efficiency, and every home boasts its own parking spaces and garden.

Cllr Duane Farr, ward councillor for Kinson, along with BCP Council colleagues, and representatives from constructors Parsons & Joyce, cut a ribbon today to officially open the site and welcome the first excited families into their homes.

Cllr Farr said: “I was shown around one of the houses and it’s just great to see the use of the space. There are quite a few single bedroom properties available, so four-bedroom properties are what’s needed in the area and this development is just fantastic to see.”

Cllr Phillip Broadhead Deputy Leader BCP Council and Portfolio Holder for Development, Growth and Regeneration said: “Larger-sized, affordable and quality family housing is vitally important in any area. Bournemouth has needed it for some time, and we’ve delivered it in spades here at Moorside Road.

“This is a unique site, in which all the houses have four bedrooms. It’s great to see these properties start to fill up with local families ahead of Christmas, and to experience our strategy and investment making a real impact on BCP resident’s lives.”

The development has been constructed by Parsons and Joyce Contractors Ltd, a local company, whose work on site has been managed by the council’s Housing Delivery Team.

The Moorside Road homes demonstrates BCP Council’s commitment to creating vibrant communities with an outstanding quality of life, where everyone plays an active role.

It also supports the council’s ambitions to achieve a cleaner, sustainable future that preserves the area’s outstanding environment for generations to come.

Three new routes announced by Ryanair for Bournemouth Airport

by Roy Martin December 9, 2022
written by Roy Martin

Ryanair has announced its biggest-ever Bournemouth schedule with 18 routes, including three new routes to Carcassonne, Edinburgh and Venice planned for Summer 2023.

This growth is underpinned by the addition of a 2nd based aircraft, representing a $200m investment for the southern region and supporting over 550 local jobs.

Speaking from Bournemouth Airport on Thursday, Ryanair DAC CEO, Eddie Wilson, said: “As the UK’s most reliable airline, Ryanair is delighted to announce even more growth with the addition of a 2nd based aircraft ($200m investment) and our biggest ever schedule for Bournemouth – offering 120 weekly flights on 18 routes, incl. our exciting new routes to Carcassonne, Edinburgh and Venice for Summer ‘23.

“With such a vast selection of sunny hotspots and city break destinations to choose from, UK holidaymakers can start booking their low fare summer holidays now on Ryanair.com.

“Ryanair is driving the UK’s economic recovery through our delivery of year-round tourism, regional investment and job creation. However, if UK tourism is to continue to grow, especially in regional UK locations like Bournemouth, the Govt should immediately scrap APD in full for all travel and provide incentives for airlines, like Ryanair, to stimulate growth and recovery for the UK (an island-based economy) and its regions.”

Steve Gill, managing director of Bournemouth Airport, said: “This is fantastic news for our passengers and offers even more choice from their local airport. We’re on course to have recovered 95% of our pre-pandemic traffic by the end of this year having served 800,000 passengers and Ryanair has been a huge part of that. With new routes to Carcassonne, Edinburgh and Venice, 30% more weekly flights next summer and 18 routes in total, this is a huge vote of confidence by Ryanair in Bournemouth Airport.”

Sandbanks Ferry not expected back till the end of February 2023

by Roy Martin December 9, 2022
written by Roy Martin

Work on the planned refit of the Sandbanks Ferry has been delayed again till the end of February 2023.

The company says the planned work for the ferry refit has progressed well and is almost complete, and had it not been for the damage that occurred enroute to Falmouth, it would be looking for a weather window to be towed back to Poole on time.

The repairs to the damaged areas of the ferry are progressing and the new prow arm is planned to be fitted next week. Two new prow ramp sections have been ordered and are currently being produced in Poland by the original makers.

The company said: “Delivery of these is expected in early February 2023, but this was the quickest option available and not the cheapest. When the new prow ramps arrive in the UK they will need to be fitted and once that is complete, we will commence with pre-service checks and sea trials.”

Jason du Toit, the Sandbanks Ferry Company’s Managing Director, added “We are going as fast as we are able so as to minimise time out of service. The repairs we are undertaking are subject to various time-consuming approvals for safety reasons. I share all our customers frustration at the extended absence of the service and can once again only apologise.

“We expect that the ferry service will recommence by the end of February 2023. ”

All prepaid Sandbanks Ferry Ticket Card (SFTC) Passes will automatically have their expiry date extended by 3 months. SFTC’s are available free of charge from the Ferry Office and the Toll Booths on Ferry Road. Further details can be found here.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service reminds us to save safely this winter

by Roy Martin December 2, 2022
written by Roy Martin

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding us about the best ways to stay safe while staying warm this winter especially with the rising cost of living.

Safe & Well Manager Vikki Thomas said: “Whenever the temperatures start to drop, we know that people will get heaters and electric blankets out of storage, but we also know that lots of households are doing things differently at the moment to try and save money. Whether that’s using an open fire for the first time in years, or delaying essential maintenance of boilers, the risks could be far greater than any cash saving, so we’re urging everyone to take extra care and #SaveSafely.”

She added: “We are here to help and offer advice. If you are in doubt over any home safety issues, please do get in touch, and always remember to test your smoke detector every week, as working smoke detectors save lives. We’d also recommend carbon monoxide alarms to warn against the risk of CO poisoning – it could be the best thing you buy this year. Anyone concerned that they may not have sufficient smoke or carbon monoxide detection in their home can ask us for a free Safe & Well check.”

Safety advice includes:

  • Using camping stoves or barbecues indoors is really dangerous. They are designed to be used outside only, and they can cause carbon monoxide poisoning – even if you have the doors and windows open. It’s the same with patio heaters, they are only suitable to use outside.
  • Electric heaters or electric blankets that haven’t been used for years can be a fire risk. Watch for signs of dangerous or loose wiring, such as scorch marks, hot plugs and sockets, fuses that often blow, or circuit breakers that trip for no obvious reasons.
  • Make sure you are using the right heater in the right place. Standard gas or electric portable heaters must not be used in shower rooms or bathrooms. Portable gas heaters should only be used in well-ventilated rooms and never in bedrooms. Outdoor heaters should never be used indoors.
  • An electric blanket that has been stored folded may have damage to the internal wiring. It’s safest to store them flat or rolled up.
  • If you’re drying clothes indoors rather than use a tumble dryer, keep them well away from the heat source so they can’t catch fire.
  • Getting chimneys swept when you have a woodburner or open fire is essential to reduce the risk of chimney fires. Also be careful of what you burn; green (unseasoned) wood may seem cheap, but it doesn’t create much heat and it creates a residue that can easily catch alight within the chimney.
  • Not getting your boiler serviced is a false economy – a well maintained boiler is more efficient and reduces the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using wheat bags – don’t heat them for too long, or at too high a temperature.

Dorset Council report shows education for children in care is improving

by Roy Martin December 1, 2022
written by Roy Martin

A report released by Dorset Council has concluded that children in care in Dorset are thriving in the right educational setting, attending, feel included and listened to so that they become independent and resilient young people.

The report states: ‘We do not give up when one of our children hits a bump in the road; we set our sights high, in the knowledge that every child has the potential and right to a wonderful future leading from a brilliant education.’

Councillor Andrew Parry, portfolio holder for children, education, skills and early help, said: ‘We know that children do their very best when they are in an educational setting as much as possible – not only is it good for their achievement but it is also good for their mental wellbeing and their social development whatever age they are.

‘So I am really pleased to see that we’ve seen a reduction in the number of children on reduced timetables and a reduction of the number of children missing out on education.’

As well as taking part in education, the achievements of over 100 children were celebrated at the Dorset Virtual School Exceptional People in Care (EPIC) Awards, and there have been weekly celebrations of over 100 children and young people who have excelled in education or overcome significant barriers.

2022 also saw the first Dorset Young Person Conference which helps to raise ambition and aspiration for this group of young people who often have a harder start in life.

The Virtual School Council started just over a year ago to further engage with the young people in care and create a forum for their thoughts and ideas on the Virtual School. Children on the Virtual School Council say that they ‘want to work together to share our voice, have fun and make friends.’

Councillor Parry added: ‘This annual report is a wonderful opportunity to share in and celebrate the achievements and successes of our children and young people over the past year.

‘I am incredibly proud of all our children and young people, who daily show their resilience, perseverance and determination.

‘I would like to thank all our carers, teachers, virtual school leads, social workers, personal assistants and the wider teams that support our children to achieve their potential and widen their aspirations.’

The Fostering Network in Dorset partners with the Mockingbird programme

by B1 November 30, 2022
written by B1

The Fostering Network in Dorset has agreed on a partnership with the global Mockingbird programme.

Mockingbird delivers sustainable foster care as an evidence-based model structured around the support and relationships an extended family provides.

The model nurtures the relationships between children, young people and foster families supporting them.

The first extended family group, or constellation, met for a party to celebrate the official start of the programme with Dorset Council.

Freya Burley, Mockingbird implementation manager at The Fostering Network said: ‘We’re really delighted to celebrate the launch of Mockingbird in Dorset. The model has had a big impact for fostering families around the UK, and globally.

“It works by setting up a group of six to ten fostering families, known as a constellation, who provide support to each other in a similar way to an extended family.

“Relationships are key to the success of Mockingbird, so at the centre of each constellation there is a hub home family who organise at least one social event every month for the families, offer emotional and practical support and can even have the children in the constellation for sleepovers. The model offers supportive relationships for everyone in the fostering family, including the sons and daughters of foster carers.”

Helena and Graham Sellers are the hub home carers for the first constellation. Helena said: “I am really excited to see all the families come together with all their children, both foster children and birth children. The party was a great way to celebrate this first constellation and I think the support we are all able to give each other will really help us to see the children do well.”

Cllr Andrew Parry, portfolio holder for children, education and early years, said: “We know that there is evidence that the Mockingbird programme really works to support foster families.

“The hub home carer builds strong relationships with everyone in the constellation, so families are better placed to support each other and overcome problems before they escalate. Best of all, the children have another trusted adult they can talk to if they are going through a tough time.”

Dorset Council’s fostering service puts the children who need loving, local foster homes at the heart of everything it does. The key focus is on keeping local children close to their schools, friends and birth families so they are always looking for more foster carers.

Foster carers transform the lives of children and young people by opening their hearts and homes to those who need it the most. At present, demand for foster carers in Dorset is high – especially for teenagers and sibling groups.

Three year old girl bitten on her leg by a dog in Canford Heath

by B1 November 30, 2022
written by B1

A three-year-old girl has been bitten on her leg by a dog at the bus shelter opposite The Pilot pub in Adastral Road in Canford Heath, Poole.

Police are investigating the incident that happened around 5.15pm on Tuesday 15 November 2022.

The woman with the dog denied it had bit her and left the scene without giving her details.

UPDATE 4PM: A woman has come forward following an appeal in relation to a report of a dog bite incident in Poole.

Round Table Christmas tree-cycling to help Christchurch hospice

by B1 November 30, 2022
written by B1

Householders can book to have their Christmas trees collected in January and raise much-needed funds for the Mac Unit hospice.

Christchurch Round Table volunteers will be carrying out two days of collections, taking away trees from £10, and donating proceeds to the palliative care unit in the grounds of Christchurch Hospital, which cares for 1600 patients each year.

Nigel Jarvis of Christchurch Round Table explained: “We are delighted to announce that Macmillan Caring Locally, the charity which supports the Mac Unit, will receive half of all money raised by this year’s tree-cycle, with the other fifty per cent going to other local charities.

“The Mac Unit and its staff provide invaluable care and support to a growing number of terminally-ill people and their families each year and it is great to know our efforts will be helping them to carry on their work in 2023.”

People wishing to have their trees taken away can book a collection slot on either January 2nd or 8th, then simply leave their tree* out on their driveway the night before.

Nigel and his fellow volunteers will arrive early in the morning to take it away.

He added: “This year we have expanded our collection areas and will be collecting from all BH23, BH25 & BH5, BH6, BH7 postcodes. But if you are outside of this area, please contact us before booking as we may still be able to help.”

Barry Wilson, Events and Media Manager at Macmillan Caring Locally said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Christchurch Round Table has chosen us to benefit for this year’s collection and hope householders will take this opportunity to get rid of their trees easily and cheaply, knowing they are also helping the Mac Unit.”

To book your Christmas tree collection click here or email: trees@christchurchroundtable.co.uk.

*Tree size is limited to 6ft or by prior arrangement. If your tree will be much taller than 6ft please let Nigel and his team know.

Gary O’Neil appointed permanent manager at AFC Bournemouth

by B1 November 27, 2022
written by B1

Gary O’Neil has been appointed as the permanent new head coach at AFC Bournemouth after a spell as caretaker.

O’Neil has agreed terms on an initial one-and-a-half year contract which has the provision to be extended for a further 12 months.

The 39-year-old joined the Cherries as first-team coach in February 2021 and was a member of the coaching staff as the Cherries regained a place in the Premier League after being promoted from the Championship last season.

He took charge of 12 games on an interim basis at the end of August and helped steady the ship following three defeats.

O’Neil began his tenure by presiding over a six-match unbeaten run in the top flight and was nominated for the Premier League manager-of-the-month award in September.

He was at the helm as the Cherries collected thirteen points from wins over Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Everton together with draws against Wolves, Newcastle, Brentford and Fulham.

O’Neil’s permanent appointment follows emphatic back-to-back victories over Everton in the Carabao Cup and Premier League at the start of this month.

He will return to the dugout following the World Cup break when the Cherries visit Newcastle in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday 21st December.

His full coaching setup will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

AFC Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake told afcb.co.uk: “Gary did an excellent job on an interim basis and the board are delighted to make his position as head coach permanent.

“We have been impressed with the way he has conducted himself from the moment he joined the club and feel he has earned this opportunity to continue to take the team and the club forward.

“Gary has worked tirelessly and diligently on the training pitch and the players have responded by producing some excellent performances and results.

“It was evident from the reception he received from our supporters following the Premier League win against Everton that they have also appreciated his efforts and we are all looking forward to continuing our working relationship with him.”

O’Neil enjoyed an illustrious playing career, with 240 of his 542 appearances coming in the Premier League for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham and Norwich City.

He was also capped by England at under-19, under-20 and under-21 level and captained his country at the 2003 FIFA Under-20 World Youth Championship.

Crowned player of the year at Bolton in his final season, O’Neil took up his first coaching role when he was appointed assistant manager by Liverpool under-23s in August 2020.

Christmas Drive In Movies at the Old Holmsley Aerodrome under threat

by B1 November 17, 2022
written by B1

The annual Drive-in Movies experience is returning to the Old Holmsley Aerodrome in the New Forest this year with tickets now available.

Elf, Home Alone, The Polar Express, Love Actually and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation are just some of the films showing on the big screen between December 16th and 19th 2022.

The event features food and drink before and during the movies, with car delivery service available.

However, organiser Emma Preston has informed those with tickets already that the event might be cancelled if more tickets aren’t sold to at least cover the cost of the event.

In an email sent to customers today, Emma said: “The cost of the event has always been high and has now risen substantially, we need to sell 95% of each movie to break even. This is due to the hire of the screen being exceptionally high as it is a very expensive piece of equipment as well as having to give 40% in royalties back to the film owners. Then there are the other cost of staff, insurance, toilets, electrics etc etc.

“Being a 1 woman band I unfortunately don’t have the capital to cover the event if we don’t break even.”
