Two dogs were rescued and given oxygen by firefighters after a blaze at a block of flats in Boscombe this morning.

Four crews from Springbourne, Westbourne, Christchurch and Redhill Park stations were called to the first floor flat in Christchurch Road at nine o’clock after smoke alarms were heard.

No-one was in the flat apart from the dogs. They were given oxygen using equipment provided by the Smokey Paws charity and taken to the vets for a check-up.

A resident on the second floor was also taken to safety.

Christchurch Road was closed during the incident.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to a block of flats on Christchurch Road, Bournemouth at 9.01am this morning (2 February), after neighbours were made aware of a fire in a first floor flat due to the smoke alarms sounding.

“Four crews attended, from Springbourne, Westbourne, Christchurch and Redhill Park, and firefighters in breathing apparatus gained entry to the affected property and rescued two dogs – the occupier was not at home at the time.

“They also brought a resident from the second floor to safety using a fire escape hood. A hose reel jet and a main jet were used to extinguish the fire, and mechanical ventilation was used to clear the smoke.

“The stop came at 9.53am and a fire investigation is now underway. All but one of the appliances have left the scene. The dogs were given oxygen by firefighters using equipment provided by the Smokey Paws charity, and have been taken to a vet for precautionary checks.”

Dorset Police said: “We received a report at 9.14am that the fire service was in attendance at a property fire in Christchurch Road in Bournemouth.

“Officers attended to assist with traffic management and road closures have been put in place.”

BU study finds new online treatment can help eating disorder thoughts and behaviours

by Andy Diprose February 2, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

A study by clinical psychologists and researchers at Bournemouth University has found that a new online treatment can help eating disorder thoughts and behaviours.

The team developed a series of five videos and an accompanying booklet.

The videos aim to normalise emotions and bring awareness of the role they play in eating disorders.

They also provide help to better identify and manage difficult emotions.

Dr Laura Renshaw-Vuillier, Principal Academic in Psychology at Bournemouth University, who led the study, said: “People with eating disorders, particularly those with bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder, have to wait a long time to receive treatment – sometimes years.

“The sad fact is that not everybody fully recovers after treatment, with studies finding that up to fifty or sixty percent will still have symptoms.”

Most current treatments mainly focus on helping a patient regain or maintain a healthy weight by eating more regularly and avoiding bingeing or purging the food they consume.

Dr Renshaw-Vuillier said: “That is really important, but it is not the whole story because it is addressing the symptoms rather than the reasons people are getting to that stage in the first place.”

Thirty nine men and women with eating disorders took part in the pilot study.

At the beginning they completed a questionnaire about their emotions, anxiety levels and eating disorder thoughts and behaviours amongst others.

They then spent a week watching the videos and completing the exercises in the workbook before completing the questionnaire again.

The results showed a significant reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression among the participants.

Many said that understanding their emotions had helped them reduce their eating disorder behaviours.

One female participant said: “I’m responding to my emotions in a more patient manner as well as not engaging in unhealthy coping mechanisms the past week such as eating less or self-harming.

“I feel that I have found alternative ways to cope that actually feel just as effective and make far more sense.”

A male participant said: “It’s changed my life and helped me to heal.

“I have already found I am worrying much less.

“Sleeping much better. Getting on with things without blocks of procrastination, worry and lack of energy.”

Dr Renshaw-Vuillier said: “I did not expect the results to be as good as they were after just a week.

“To see such reductions in eating disorder behaviour, anxiety and depression was amazing.

“Whilst it was only a short trial period, we achieved a shift in thinking about emotions and helped to normalise them for the people taking part.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done, including further exploring the potential risks, but these preliminary results are very exciting.”

The team has now received funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to further develop the programme with patients waiting for treatment for eating disorders on the NHS.

It will allow the researchers to further test and refine the video content based on feedback from patients and clinicians, and to consider how the programme could be implemented as a treatment plan in national healthcare systems.

Bournemouth lifeguard Christian Mitchell will be swimming 21 miles – the equivalent of crossing the channel from England to France – in a charity challenge next week.

Together with students Arief McKenna and Justus Dirks, he’ll be raising money for Julia’s House children’s hospice.

The challenge is on Wednesday February 7 in the pool at Stokewood Leisure Centre where Christian works.

Bournemouth and Hammers share spoils after VAR drama

by Charlie February 1, 2024
written by Charlie

The Cherries have taken one point away from their London travels after a 1-1 draw filled with plenty of VAR controversy.

Bournemouth started the game in perfect style netting within three minutes before a lengthy VAR check halted celebrations but after it was deemed that West Ham debutant Kalvin Phillips played the final ball, Dominic Solanke’s 13th goal of the league season was given onside.

Iraola’s men dominated the rest of the first half but couldn’t beat Areola in the Hammers goal for the second time.

The turn of the half saw West Ham firing on all cylinders and it took 15 minutes before Kudus caused Lloyd Kelly too many problems and won a penalty much to the protests of the away side.

As always, James Ward Prowse netted from the spot and sealed a point for West Ham who are still looking for their first win of 2024.

The draw comes in the wake of some transfer deadline day business for the Cherries that sees Welsh international Kieffer Moore go on loan to high flying Ipswich while former Man City striker Enes Unal comes in on loan from Getafe.

Cost of Dorset policing service going up an extra £13 a year for Band D

by Trevor Bevins February 1, 2024
written by Trevor Bevins

The cost of Policing in Dorset is going up an extra £1.08 a month from April if you live in a band D property.

Dorset’s Police and Crime Panel have unanimously approved plans to increase the amount of money residents in the county pay for their policing service.

But Police and Crime Commissioner for the county, David Sidwick, says the unfairness of the Government’s police funding formula will see Dorset at least £5m short in the coming financial year – even with the maximum allowable increase in the force share of the council tax.

He says he has been ‘banging on’ at the Government to change the formula since taking up the post almost five years ago.

“Just flippin’ well get on and do it.. all we get is a promise that it will be sorted out” he told Thursday’s Dorset Police and Crime Panel meeting.

The panel unanimously agreed a £13 per year increase for the average Band D home, the maximum allowed, pushing the annual payment as part of the police share of the council tax to £293.58p.

Mr Sidwick said the realistic figure should have been £30 to allow for some growth and service improvements.

He said that the Government’s funding formula, which provides roughly half of the force income, amounted to what he described as “perverse alchemy” – giving much more money to urban forces and taking little, or no account, of the higher costs for forces such as Dorset which is more expensive to police because of its rural nature and because of the massive influx of visitors in the summer months.

He said that with a fairer funding formula he would like to have seen the force take on an extra 70 police officers, something which was now unlikely to be delivered, and might also have been able to reduce losses from staff posts which were likely to go through money saving reviews.

The Police and Crime Commissioner said the Chief Constable, in consultation with his office, would now have to continue looking for productivity and efficiency savings throughout the coming year, rather than plan for growth.

Asked by panel chairman, Mike Short, whether the need for savings would impair the safety of council taxpayer he replied “absolutely not.”

Questions were asked during the meeting about the £660,000 paid out each year in interest charges on £16m on debt.

Mr Sidwick said the borrowing had been necessary to support improvements to buildings, including leaking police station roofs, new boilers and solar panels, upgrades in IT equipment and new vehicles.

“People need places to work from, they need equipment and borrowing was the only way, in some cases, to deal with that. We have always tried to achieve the best borrowing rate possible.”

One of the biggest capital costs for the force has been a £14.5million new headquarters building at the force headquarters at Winfrith.

David Sidwick: “Firstly, I want to thank each of the 1,984 people who responded to share their thoughts on police funding and precept.

“I want to be clear that asking the residents of Dorset for more money is not something I wanted to do, especially during a time when so many are feeling the pinch.

“But to ensure Dorset remains one of the safest places in the country, we need to be able to maintain our current position in order to continue driving down crime and protecting people from harm.

“Whether this is by tackling the issue of drugs through more prevention, treatment and tough enforcement with Operation Scorpion and Operation Viper, launching more rural crime initiatives like the Rural Mounted Volunteers or bringing in more funding money than ever for new projects towards the protection of women and girls against violence and anti-social behaviour, I am committed to ensuring every penny counts.

“Since I became Police and Crime Commissioner, I have relentlessly lobbied for a fairer funding deal for Dorset. I want to assure you I will continue to raise this issue until we see issues of sparsity and seasonality addressed in the way our Force is funded centrally.

“I will continue to fight to make Dorset the safest county for all of us. Achieving a better funding deal is integral to delivering the Police and Crime Plan, which means being tough on crime, keeping people safe and putting victims first.”

Dorset Police Chief Constable Amanda Pearson added: “Today’s agreement of the budget means we can now focus firmly on the year ahead and how we as a force are going to deliver an even better policing service to the communities of Dorset.

“I thank the Commissioner, the panel, and our communities for their support in increasing the precept – we will make every penny count.

“Dorset is one of the safest areas in the country, but we must not be complacent and should always focus on improvement to ensure we strive to be the safest county in the country.

“Our purpose continues to commit to being tough on crime, relentlessly pursuing those criminals who cause the most harm to our communities, keeping people safe and putting victims first.”

New figures show Dorset leads the way in answering NHS 111 calls

by Andy Diprose February 1, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

People needing medical help and phoning NHS 111 in Dorset have their calls answered quicker than the rest of England.

New figures show that, on average, staff from Dorset HealthCare took less than 18 seconds to answer 111 calls in 2023.

That’s currently the best performance of any 111 service in England.

Almost all calls were picked up in under a minute.

NHS 111 operators can provide expert advice and arrange for people to access the care they need.

The aim is to reduce unnecessary trips to hospital emergency departments and the long waits which may follow.

Data provided by NHS Dorset has revealed that since April last year:

  • more than 92% of 111 calls have been answered in under 60 seconds
  • the average speed to answer was just over 17 seconds
  • even at the busiest times, all calls were answered with two minutes.

Anyone needing urgent medical help for something that is not life-threatening and can’t wait to see their GP can get support 24/7 via 111.nhs.uk or by calling 111.

When using the 111 service they’re given advice or booked in for a face-to-face appointment at the appropriate site, such as a minor injuries unit or urgent treatment centre.

Dan McKie, Dorset HealthCare’s integrated urgent care operational lead, said: “Our 111 staff can support you to access the right care in the right place at the right time.

“This will help reduce pressure on hospital emergency departments and avoid people attending there when they don’t need to.

“If you do call at a busy time, please be patient – we will get to your call as quickly as possible.”

Anyone requiring urgent care should call 999 and ask for an ambulance.

Extra tax on Dorset’s 5,700 second homes could bring in a £9.5 million windfall from 2025

by Andy Diprose February 1, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

An extra tax on Dorset’s 5,700 second homes could bring in a £9.5 million windfall from April 2025.

Dorset Council has confirmed that it will be seeking to adopt the additional tax now that government legislation has been approved.

The changes will also see an extra charge levied on empty and unfurnished homes after one year, compared to the existing two year limit.

Portfolio holder Cllr Gill Haynes said she will be bringing the proposals to the February 13th full council meeting to consider the 100 per cent premium on second and empty homes.

The changes had been talked about a year ago, based on the government’s ‘levelling up’ legislation, but there was a delay in receiving Royal Assent, missing the deadline for April this year.

Even if approved by Dorset Council the changes will not affect most of the holiday homes in the county which are mainly let out on a commercial basis and pay business rates rather than standard council tax.

When discussed a year ago several second home owners warned that the extra tax might force them to sell up, harming the county’s economy.

But council officers believe only a few are likely to take the step although many might try to convert their second homes into businesses which, in turn, would result in an increase income for the council from business rates.

It would also make it easier for the authority to charge higher fees for services to those properties, including rubbish and recycling collections.

The difficulty for owners seeking to convert to business use is that they would have to make the property available for letting for at least 20 weeks in every year and would have to prove it had been let for at least 70 days.

A decision on whether a property remains on the Council Tax List or the Business Rate list lies with the Valuation Office which is independent of the council.

In some Dorset communities second and holiday homes often exceed 25% of all properties, leading, according to some, to a decline in a sense of community with rising prices forcing local people on average incomes out of the housing market.

A31 closed during Wednesday morning rush-hour following fuel spillage

by Roy Martin January 31, 2024
written by Roy Martin

A fuel spillage on the A31 at Ringwood caused long delays on the surrounding roads on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services responded to the incident, which included a car falling off a trailer, just before 8am near the Ashley Heath interchange and the road was closed for around two hours.

There was major disruption to local public transport, as the A338 Spur Road was congested north bound, along with the A31 eastbound, the B3081 Verwood Road and A338 Salisbury Road, both southbound.

Traffic through Ringwood was also at a standstill as motorists diverted via the Avon Causeway and Christchurch Road.

The spillage happened shortly after another incident at the Blackwater junction on the A338, in which two people were arrested on suspicion of driving offences and subsequently taken to hospital as a precaution.

Bournemouth & Poole College puts the focus on apprenticeships at information event

by Andy Diprose January 31, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Bournemouth & Poole College is putting the focus on apprenticeships next week.

It’s holding an apprenticeships information event – called Apprenticeships Unlocked – at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre on Thursday February 8 from 4pm to 7pm.

Taking place during National Apprenticeship Week, there’ll be a chance to meet employers in a wide variety of key sectors and receive expert guidance from the college’s apprenticeship team.

Everyone is invited including school leavers, students, anyone looking for a career change, parents, guardians or employers looking to recruit apprentices.

The college delivers over 30 different apprenticeships and works with more than two thousand businesses.

Stacey Howlett, Business Development Account Manager, pictured, said apprenticeships were the best way to gain on-the-job training, learn key skills through study and receive a salary.

She said: “We’re really pro-apprenticeships because it’s a great opportunity for employers to grow their workforce but, equally, it’s a great opportunity for students to get more of a hands-on experience.

“Ninety six per cent of our students actually retain employment after they’ve completed their apprenticeship so it’s a great opportunity.”

Last entry to the event is at 6.30pm.

Anyone with  apprenticeship questions should email apprenticeships@bpc.ac.uk

Work on Rockwater Sandbanks gets underway with completion set for mid-July

by Andy Diprose January 30, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Work has started on a second Rockwater hospitality venue in Poole.

The first – at Branksome Chine – opened last September with a blend of dining, drinking, entertainment and wellness activities.

The new one, at Sandbanks, is due to open in the summer.

Rockwater says BCP Council has confirmed that all agreements for the development and works of the venue have been completed.

Work is underway and due to be finished by mid-July.

During the development, Rockwater will ensure that temporary catering facilities are made available to the public at Sandbanks.

Luke Davis, Founder and CEO of Rockwater, said: “I’m pleased we can now put to bed all the rumours flying around about Rockwater Sandbanks.

“The confirmation on all agreements puts us one step closer to opening the doors of what will be a game changing venue for the Sandbanks area, providing a luxury, multi-faceted destination for both residents and visitors to enjoy.

“Working closely with the council, we’ve introduced various site safety measures to ensure that the project runs smoothly with as little disruption as possible.

“It’s going to be an exciting few months as we start to see our vision for Rockwater Village come to life.

“I’m sure it won’t be long before customers will be enjoying the breathtaking roof terrace views, accompanied by great food, inspirational music, with a delicious cocktail or coffee to hand.”

More information on Rockwater Village can be found here.

University Hospitals Dorset and Bournemouth University team up for free health talks

by Roy Martin January 30, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Experts from University Hospitals Dorset and Bournemouth University have teamed up to hold a series of free Understanding Health talks.

The first one, taking place on 6 March at 3pm in BU’s Bournemouth Gateway Building, will be focusing on menopause.

It will cover lifestyle advice, tips, information and support to improve the experience of the menopause journey.

Presenters Rosie Harper, clinical specialist physiotherapist in pelvic health at UHD, and Dr Emma Thurston, senior lecturer in physician associate studies at Bournemouth University and GP with a special interest in women’s sexual and reproductive health, will present and take questions from an in-house and online audience.

Rosie said: “One in three women experience pelvic floor related problems, such as bladder leakage and pelvic organ prolapse, at predictable points in life, such as the menopause. While normalised, these symptoms are not normal, and there are many lifestyle tweaks you can make to prevent and treat these symptoms. We’ll be talking through some of these in March.”

Dr Emma Thurston added: “Sexual health is a biopsychosocial phenomenon. It is important we consider all aspects of this framework to provide holistic care when women experience sexual health challenges during the menopause transition and beyond.”

The free event is open to everyone but booking in required to attend in person. All the information for the event, including the link to watch remotely, are available on Eventbrite.

Two further Understanding Health talks have been scheduled for later this year with Understanding Concussion in Sports and Practice taking place on 2 May and Understanding Pathology – Health under a Microscope on 4 June.

written by Andy Diprose

Registration is now open for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care’s hugely popular ‘Muddy Dog Dash’ event.

The charity is encouraging dog owners to get involved in what promises to be a brilliantly fun – and muddy – event.

The ‘Muddy Dog Dash’, sponsored by Barratt Homes, is on Sunday 17 March at Upton Country Park, Poole.

Runners, walkers, families and friends, with or without a dog, can choose between a 2.5km and 5km muddy obstacle course.

Spectators are more than welcome and can enjoy the ‘pawsome’ event village while they wait for their muddy friends to return.

Hannah Garrett, Event Fundraiser at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, said: “You can choose to run, jog or walk, that’s up to you.

“Whatever your ability it will be a fantastically muddy experience.

“There will be various fun obstacles including ramps, tyre runs, wiggle poles and much much more.

“There will be goodie bags sponsored by Nurturing by Nature, rosettes and certificates.

“Take a look at last year’s pictures online to see how much fun you are guaranteed to have.

“We want to say a huge thank you to our kind headline sponsors of this event, Barratt Homes.

“They have also assisted us with a number of the obstacles on the course.”

Megan Hamlyn, Marketing Manager at Barratt Homes, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting Lewis-Manning Hospice Care again for their hugely popular ‘Muddy Dog Dash’, it’s certainly an event not to be missed.

“Barratt Homes are always keen to support their local communities and causes like Lewis-Manning who provide vital care and support to patients and their families across East Dorset and Purbeck.”

written by Andy Diprose

A popular live music event is to return to Poole this summer with organisers promised it will be bigger and better than ever.

Thousands of fans are expected to attend the Poole Harbour Festival from Friday July 26 to Sunday July 28.

Tickets are already being snapped up well in advance with savings of up to £30 available in a special launch offer.

Building on the success of last year’s festival, the star-studded line up is headed by rock legends Razorlight.

Also on the bill are re-energised indie outfit The Coral and 90s hit makers Reef.

Other acts include The South – former members of The Beautiful South – 90s indie legends Toploader, the return of Southampton’s UK garage duo Artful Dodger, folk punk rabble-rousers Ferocious Dog and festival favourites Dr Meaker.

Ben Dyas, Festival Organiser, said: “Last year’s festival was the best yet in terms of line up and the feedback we received was really positive – we’re definitely putting Poole Harbour Festival on the map.

“Last year we had so many last minute ticket buyers we did have some queues, but we’ve learned a lot from that and as well as our best ever line up, this year we’ll have more and bigger bars, many extra toilets, easier entry and more staff and security across the site and with better signage for things like water points and toilets.

“It’s going to be a brilliant weekend!”

In the dance tent, a strong DJ bill is topped by Lisa Lashes with top ten chart regulars Ultrabeat, cut-n-paste king Jaguar Skills and Global Underground mixer Seb Fontaine.

Popular tributes include shows dedicated to Queen, Madness, Ed Sheeran, Amy Winehouse and, for the first time, Fleetwood Mac.

The festival also features the cream of music talent from the BCP region including popular party starters Mother Ukers, Americana quartet Sixteen String Jack, formidable Celtic punk band Blackwater County and festival favourites such as folk singer songwriter Gaz Brookfield.

There are also free circus shows on Saturday and Sunday as well as daily kids’ entertainers, dinosaur shows and activities.

Ben said: “We’re so grateful our amazing regulars keep coming back year after year and they’re joined by more and more music fans attracted by the star names on the bill.

“It’s the party weekend that Poole is now famous for!”

Poole Harbour Festival opens at 5pm on Friday, noon on Saturday and 11am on Sunday, closing at 11pm on Friday and Saturday and 7pm on Sunday.

Doing the biz: Record number of new start up businesses in Dorset in 2023

by Andy Diprose January 29, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

There were a record number of new start up businesses in Dorset last year.

The figure hit 8,565, making Dorset one of the most successful counties in the UK.

It brought the total number of registered businesses to an all-time high of 63,266.

Bournemouth saw the highest number of new businesses at 2,399 while the figure for Poole was 1,458.

The statistics were compiled by Inform Direct using data from Companies House and the Office for National Statistics.

John Korchak, Managing Director at Inform Direct said: “It is excellent news that Dorset can celebrate a record year for new company formations during 2023.

“The year undoubtedly presented a range of challenges for business including tepid predictions of economic growth, volatility in energy prices and uncertainty from world events.

“However, the formation figures demonstrate very clearly that Dorset entrepreneurs remained undeterred and pursued their ambitions to establish new ventures.

“This positive picture is mirrored in the overall position for the UK which saw the highest ever number of new companies established during 2023.

“The total number of UK formations exceeded 900,000 for the very first time.”

Sophie Ellis-Bextor to headline first-over Poole Pride event at Lighthouse

by Roy Martin January 26, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is returning to the area this year to headline the first ever Poole Pride on Saturday 8 June.

The singer’s 2001 hit Murder on the Dancefloor is enjoying the limelight once again after its use in the movie Saltburn.

Sophie, who last visited Poole in 2022 on her Kitchen Disco Tour, will be back at Lighthouse to headline a flat floor show before giving way to DJs as the Concert Hall hosts a late-night after-party.

She’s also scheduled to play at the BIC in December this year.

“We’re thrilled that Sophie will headline Poole’s first ever Pride this summer – she’s the perfect artist to top the bill on a day that is all about inclusivity,” says Tim Colegate, Head of Programming at Lighthouse.

“We want to create an amazing day, an event that all the people of Poole can be proud of. Poole Pride will be a safe space for everyone where people can be themselves, come as they are, and crucially, enjoy some first-class entertainment – something that Lighthouse is very used to.”

Planned in consultation with a community steering group that includes members of the LGBTQ+ community, Poole Pride will include performances and activities throughout Lighthouse, including the outdoor theatre.

A Queer film festival will run in the week leading up to Pride as well as a month-long exhibition, presented in partnership with AUB, honouring influential gay activist John Chesterman who was closely involved in the formation of the Gay Liberation Front in 1970 and whose ideas underpin the modern Pride movement.

“We’re also working on a family-friendly daytime programme with performances, talks, educational sessions and signposting to LGBTQ+ support charities and groups, and we’re thankful for the support of Bourne Free, Bournemouth’s annual pride festival, to pull this off.” adds Tim.

“Poole is a major conurbation and, as a much-cherished part of life in the town, Lighthouse is perfectly placed to host its first ever Pride event… and we’re going all out to make it a day we’ll never forget!”

Tickets go on pre-sale to pre-sale to Lighthouse Friends only today (Friday 26 January) at noon and on general sale from 10am on Thursday 1 February via the Lighthouse website.

Fitness enthusiasts launch twelve-month fundraising campaign to support Dorset’s mental health

by Andy Diprose January 26, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Fitness enthusiasts and good friends Ty Temel and Dan Chambers today launch a year-long fundraising campaign of physical challenges for mental health charity, Dorset Mind.

The ‘Mind Over Matter’ programme offers a variety of extreme challenges for the adventurous, alongside some inclusive challenges that more people can take part in.

Dorset Mind hopes the campaign will inspire a whole community of people to reap the benefits of getting active on their wellbeing.

It will also raise vital funds to help the charity expand its vital local mental health services to meet the ever-increasing need for support in Dorset.

The first event – 4x4x48 at the Hilton Bournemouth – involves running four miles every four hours for 48 hours between now and Sunday, January 28.

Held in conjunction with Rise Bournemouth and the Sole Clinic, Ty and Dan will be joined by other members of the ‘Mind Over Matter’ community.

Other challenges planned are the Vitality Bournemouth Bay Run in March, Jurassic Coast Ultra Challenge in May and the Iceland Fire and Ice Trek during September.

Every challenge will be led by either leisure and hospitality entrepreneur Ty, who’s also a charity ambassador for Dorset Mind, and Dan – and sometimes both men.

Ty Temel said: “As an ambassador for Dorset Mind and advocate of the positive benefits of getting active on mental health, we created Mind Over Matter to inspire our local community to come together for this brilliant cause – and have fun whilst doing so.

“The timing of this is especially welcomed as people are struggling with their mental health right now.

“Having a purpose and belonging to a community will give people a supportive network of like-minded people, and importantly, get them active.”

Dan added: “We’ve created a variety of events, designed to include as many people as possible.

“Whilst the 4x4x48 Challenge is aimed at the fitness community, February’s challenge of 10,000 steps per day is more accessible and achievable for a wider group.”

Dorset Mind’s CEO, Linda O’Sullivan said: “We’re incredible grateful to Ty and Dan for creating this exciting campaign and active fundraising community who are passionate about their own wellbeing – and helping others.

“More than ever, local people are turning to us for mental health support – Ty and Dan’s challenges will enable us to help those who need it most.

“Dorset Mind is extremely appreciative of all our supporters and fundraisers for their generosity and valuable time.”

Dorset Mind Patron and Principal Academic at Bournemouth University, Dr Andy Mayers, said: “As Dorset Mind Patron, I welcome any effort to help us raise much needed funds, but Ty and Dan are going above and beyond here.

“This will go such a long way to help us support more people across Dorset. I am deeply grateful.”

To join Ty and Dan in their fundraising endeavours or to find out more about the ‘Mind Over Matter’ community and their planned schedule of events visit Dorset Mind’s website here.

Dorset Olympic sailor Hannah Mills is latest athlete to join Team Panasonic

by Andy Diprose January 25, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Technology giant Panasonic has today announced Dorset Olympic sailor Hannah Mills as the latest athlete to join Team Panasonic.

She’ll be using her new role to further advance awareness for the need of everyone to take action in the fight against climate change and encourage collaboration between sport and business to drive change.

The twice Olympic gold medallist and three times world champion joins Team Panasonic alongside Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo and paralympic champion, Hannah Cockroft.

As well as her pursuits in the water, Hannah is hugely passionate about the environment having launched the Big Plastic Pledge in 2016.

She’s also co-founded Athletes of the World, an athlete group campaigning for positive impact around climate change.

Speaking of partnering with Panasonic, Hannah comments: “We need the same passion and energy as we have for sports for sustainability – where we all back the planet as our Team.

“Working with a business the size and scale of Panasonic on sustainability is truly exciting. Panasonic’s GREEN IMPACT campaign is one of the few sustainability plans I’ve read from a company of such scale that is clear, understandable and looks at all areas of the business and the impact that can be achieved.

“Achieving net zero of its own operations by 2030 through reduction, avoidance and technological innovations is, in my opinion the responsibility which not only Panasonic should work for but for all business and industry. Seeing that from Panasonic along with a plan to back it up makes me excited to see what we can achieve together.”

Exclusive – 884 drivers have offences cancelled after speed cameras found to be out of alignment

by Andy Diprose January 25, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

More than 800 drivers alleged to have been speeding on the A338 spur road in Bournemouth have had their offences cancelled after the cameras were found to have been moved out of alignment.

Dorset Police say the dealignment of the average speed cameras on the southbound stretch between the Blackwater junction and the Cooper Dean roundabout potentially breached the cameras’ approval parameters as approved by the Home Office.

It says that in an effort to be “fair and transparent” 884 offences detected on the specific cameras in the time period Tuesday 7 November to Saturday 16 December 2023 have been cancelled. The drivers concerned have been contacted.

The minimum speeding fine is currently £100 while the cost of a driver awareness course is £120 with the dealignment of the cameras, due to vandalism, losing at least £88,400 in revenue if all the drivers had been prosecuted.

The full statement to Bournemouth One from Dorset Police reads:

“Dorset Police has the duty to ensure that we do not proceed to prosecute traffic offences unless we are content that the evidence is robust.

“It has been detected that during the period of Tuesday 7 November to Saturday 16 December 2023, the average speed cameras on the southbound stretch of the A338 between Blackwater junction and the Cooper Dean roundabout were moved out of alignment. This would potentially breach the cameras’ approval parameters as authorised by the Home Office. We believe the dealignment of the cameras, meaning that the area of the road captured by the cameras’ image moved slightly, was due to vandalism.

“This is not to say that the reported drivers were not identified correctly or that offences were not committed during that period. However, in an effort to be fair and transparent, it was decided to cancel 884 offences detected on those specific cameras for that specific period. There will be no cancellation of any southbound offences outside the stated period as checks showed that the alignment was within approved parameters and evidence was deemed robust. The northbound cameras were unaffected. The 884 drivers concerned have already been contacted and any further query they may have can be submitted to cto@dorset.pnn.police.uk.

“All safety cameras are approved for their type of use, undergo periodic inspections and are checked when they are moved or calibrated. The process of dealing with speed camera offences includes an individual verification of each offence and individual cases will only move to prosecution if the evidence is robust.

“Our plea to motorists is to obey speed limits as speeding is one of the main causes of collisions, which often have devastating consequences. If speed limits are adhered to, the need of enforcement activities will be reduced.”

BCP Council plans to increase Council Tax by five per cent for the second year running

by Roy Martin January 24, 2024
written by Roy Martin

BCP Council is proposing to increase the Council Tax for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole residents by five per cent again this year.

The Council says it has produced a budget for the next four years that protects the most vulnerable and provides a sound, stable financial future.

£309m is spent each year delivering public services to more than 400,000 residents, with around two thirds of this money spent providing services for when people need support most.

The 4.99% increase is made up of 2.99% for the basic Council Tax and 2% for the social care precept.

Today’s budget identifies £41m of further savings, efficiencies, and additional income generation proposals.

BCP Council Leader Vikki Slade, said: “As a responsible council, we have a legal obligation to balance our budget and provide essential services to support the most vulnerable in our society, keep our communities clean and safe, and maintain core infrastructure.

“Making the necessary savings to achieve this balanced budget has required us to make some very difficult and painful choices. Our budget approach has been focused on delivering value for money for residents and maintaining the council’s financial health and ongoing sustainability. The budget recognises that the Council has previously been living beyond its means.

“BCP Council is facing acute pressures caused by years of austerity, recent high inflation and the exceptional demand faced by all local authorities, and other public services, at this time. We have not shirked from making the tough decisions you see outlined in these plans and we have acted responsibly to balance the budget in a sustainable way over 4 years.

“These proposals include reducing statutory services in adult and children’s social care, reducing early help and preventative services, cutting our Community Safety Accredited Officers, changing the way we support the Bournemouth Air Festival, reducing grass cutting and finding ways to reduce the costs of our library services.

“We know how tough these proposals will be for our residents to hear but we have no alternative. We must deliver a budget that puts the council on a sustainable financial footing and avoids serious government interventions that we have seen in other parts of the country.”

To date the Council has already delivered £82 million in savings, efficiencies, additional income and service adjustments since bringing three councils into one authority. Some of these savings have come from the council’s transformation programme which has been working to redesign services to make them more efficient, and in turn, more cost effective to run, but other savings have come from reductions in key services as well.

The report and full appendices are available here.

Happy birthday BIC! Bournemouth International Centre celebrates 40th anniversary this year

by Andy Diprose January 24, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Bournemouth International Centre – better known as ‘the BIC’ – is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

The venue welcomes more than 300,000 visitors a year and is a popular venue for conferences, exhibitions, cultural events, entertainment and hospitality.

Its four main halls includes a standing arena for 6,200 people.

International superstars who have played there include Gary Barlow, One Direction, Tom Jones, Dolly Parton, Barry Manilow and Bob Dylan.

Other headliners over the past 40 years include performances from Diana Ross, Oasis, Girls Aloud, and Sir Elton John.

From rum & reggae festivals, Oktoberfest and tattoo exhibitions, there is no showcase, exhibition or theme the venue has not hosted.

Business events, conferences, and exhibitions are an integral feature of Bournemouth’s landscape too.

Known for attracting high-profile clients from around the UK and Europe, the BIC is frequently attended by delegates from leading charities, professional associations, religious institutions, corporate clients, and public sector organisations.

Events at the venue generate millions of pounds of economic benefit for the region each year and support thousands of jobs.

The venue regularly accommodates major trade shows and high-profile conferences such as political parties, national union congresses and medical associations.

Exhibitions are also held at the venue throughout the year and have included wedding shows, flower shows, gin festivals, gaming expos and pop culture conventions such as Bournemouth Film & Comic Con.

For the past 13 years, Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) has been operated by registered charity BH Live, in partnership with BCP Council.

BH Live’s team at Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) works closely with other town partners too including the Coastal BID to support Business Events Bournemouth, the region’s business tourism bureau, venue and hotel finder, to attract major events to the area.

BH Live has funded several major projects and all-weather attractions to improve the town’s offering with a diverse and appealing community programme for all.

These have featured dinosaurs, toy brick installations, sea creature exhibitions, interactive creepy crawly events, plus costume and film experiences.

For over ten years the venue has been home to Cool Coast Ice Rink, one of the largest seasonal indoor ice-skating rinks on the South Coast.

Operating annually from December to February, it attracted more than 30,000 visitors last year. In addition, the annual Bournevaria Oktoberfest festival has been delighting crowds for several years with bags of lederhosen, tankards, live music, and oompah!

Additional BH Live investment into the venue includes connectivity upgrades with a full enterprise-grade network installation providing faster WiFi and integrated networks for visitors, clients and members of the public.

Furthermore, redecoration, new flooring, improved fixtures and fittings, equipment, repairs and energy efficiency works are underway 365 days a year.

More recently, Elevate Brasserie & Bar opened to the public in 2023 with views across Bournemouth’s seafront, providing visitors, showgoers and delegates with quality food and drink.

BCP Council has made several investments into the venue too including LED lighting installations and fitting more than 900 solar PV panels to generate power and essential infrastructure works.

£1.8 million was recently allocated by the council to revitalise the venue’s meeting room facilities and enhance public spaces with improved digital signage.

Steve Turner, BH Live’s Associate Director of Venues said: “40 years of making a difference in our local community is such a huge milestone to celebrate. Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) benefits so many people whether that is through coming to see a cultural event, attending a business event, or visiting one of our seasonal attractions.

“Furthermore, as BH Live is a registered charity, any surplus revenue generated through our services is reinvested back into our local facilities to make sure we continue to have visitor appeal and keep bringing people into the town.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported us and visited the BIC over this past 40 years – and here’s to many more – we couldn’t do it without you.”

Looking ahead to its 40th year Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) has another diverse cultural and business events programme.

Highlights include musical, comedic and dance events with performances from Bill Bailey, Rick Astley, Diversity, Jason Derulo, Romesh Ranganathan, Paloma Faith, and many more. Oktoberfest will also return to the BIC in the autumn.

‘Day of Action’ as BCP Council works with partners to improve Bournemouth town centre

by Andy Diprose January 24, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

The first of three ‘Days of Action’ aimed at improving Bournemouth town centre is being held today, Wednesday January 24

An engagement stand will be based outside NatWest bank in Bournemouth Square between 11am and 3pm.

Residents are urged to come along and engage with representatives from BCP Council and partners including Dorset Police and Bournemouth Town Centre BID.

The council says that following a Town Centre summit nine weeks ago, it has been working hard with its partners to deliver and enable positive change for the town centre.

Areas where residents and businesses requested improvement include cleansing, parking enforcement, enabling the commercial use of empty premises and organising days of action.

Since the summit, the council has prioritised improvements in these specific areas, working with Bournemouth Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID) to:

  • Paint lampposts
  • Undertake manual weed treatment
  • Remove fallen leaves
  • Wash down litter bins
  • Remove stickers and graffiti.

BCP Council’s Parking Enforcement team has been undertaking additional targeted patrols in key areas across the town centre, including Old Christchurch Road, working to increase road safety and improve journey times.

During three, six-hour targeted patrols earlier this month, 111 Penalty Charge Notice’s (PCN’s) were issued, and a large number of vehicles moved on for being illegally parked.

The council says it will continue to work alongside Dorset Police to enforce this for the benefit of residents and businesses.

Cllr Vikki Slade, Leader of BCP Council, pictured, said: “The council continues to prioritise Bournemouth town centre, not just with words, but with action.

“I have seen first-hand the amazing work carried out by officers in our parking and cleansing services.

“I’ve been able to see what our street cleansing operatives face at 4am every day of the week and witness how challenging parking enforcement can be in a busy town centre close to midnight on a Saturday.

“I’m encouraged by the work already being done to improve these aspects of Bournemouth town centre, but I know there is still lots to be done.

“I have been clear from the outset that BCP Council can’t do this alone.

“We simply do not have the funds to deliver all of the improvements that were captured in the Town Centre Survey, it must be a shared effort.

“I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate my commitment to do all we can to remove the barriers and bureaucracy to empower our communities to do more in the town centre.”

BCP Council recently published the results of its Town Centre Survey, which are informing its priorities moving forward and reflect the need for change in these areas.

The results can be seen here.

Tickets go on sale for second “bigger and better” Bournemouth Writing Festival

by Andy Diprose January 23, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Tickets for this year’s Bournemouth Writing Festival have gone on sale with organisers promising it will be even bigger and better.

Now in its second year, the event takes place from Friday 26 April to Sunday 28 April.

Once again it will bring together a diverse community of writers, authors and writing professionals for a weekend of learning, inspiration and collaboration.

Following its successful first year – which saw 75 events and activities from more than 100 writing experts and professionals and nearly 2,000 tickets sold – the 2024 festival again promises to offer tips, guidance, advice and inspiration for writers at all stages of their writing journey.

From talks, workshops and masterclasses to networking events and panels, a plethora of events and activities to inspire writers to write is being planned.

In 2023, best-selling author Heidi Perks spoke about writing thrillers on the South Coast while horror writer Matt Shaw explained how he created to make a career from self-publishing.

AFC Bournemouth partnered with the festival to launch a creative writing competition for primary schools while Richard & Judy-winning author Chris Aziz led a writing workshop on the beach.

The 2024 Bournemouth Writing Festival promises to be filled with more free and ticketed events and activities to inspire writers to write.

It includes:

  • Talks, panels, masterclasses and workshops by renowned authors and writers. The festival will once again feature a line-up of authors, poets, journalists, screenwriters and industry experts, offering a range of inspiring talks, panel discussions, and hands-on workshops. From starting out, techniques and tips to enhance your prose, editing, querying and choosing the traditional vs self-publishing route, there is something for every writer to progress their writing and get it out into the world.
  • 1:2:1s. New for 2024 is the chance to pitch your manuscript to literary agents and to get personalised feedback on aspects of your writing from writing professionals in private sessions. Marketing, plotting, querying, characterisation, agenting, pacing, funding – an expert will be available to help with your specific needs (price per session to be confirmed).
  • Inspiration to Write. The festival will host a variety of unique indoor and outdoor activities and events to help stimulate creativity. You’ll never have a blank page with the breadth of writing professionals and ideas at your fingertips.
  • Networking. The Bournemouth Writing Festival is not only a platform for learning but also an excellent opportunity to connect with local writers, agents, publishers, and other industry professionals. The festival’s vibrant atmosphere and funky venues encourage meaningful networking and potential collaborations.
  • Poetry Hub. New for 2024 will be our Poetry Hub – an exclusive venue where poems and poets are in abundance! For complete beginners to seasoned pros, there will be activities, talks and inspiration-galore to get you writing.
  • Events for Children. The festival is planning activities and events to inspire children to read and write, including workshops, trails and activities designed specifically for children.

The main festival hub will be at the Pavilion Dance South West.

Paul Kinvig, COO of Bournemouth Town Centre BID, said: “The first Writing Festival was a huge success and just what Bournemouth needed, bringing together creatives, writers, students and local businesses with an energetic focus.

“It demonstrated that towns outside of London are hubs of creativity and imagination. We are pleased to continue our support and can’t wait to see what’s on offer in 2024.”

Festival Director, Dominic Wong, pictured, said: “The buzz and community feel around the first writing festival was tangible, evidenced in our continuing networking events and private Facebook group.

“We’ve already had interest from national agents, publishers and companies wanting to get involved.

“2024 promises to be bigger and better!”

The Bournemouth Writing Festival is supported by the Town Centre BID and Solid Imagery Photography.

It’s part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Arts Council England.

Residents, businesses and visitors invited to help shape travel and transport across Dorset

by Andy Diprose January 23, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Residents, businesses and visitors are being invited to share their views on what they consider to be the big transport opportunities and issues across the whole of Dorset.

BCP Council and Dorset Council are running a survey to gather feedback and experiences.

It runs from Monday 22 January, to Sunday 3 March.

People are being asked what they think are the key opportunities and issues to help the councils develop a new joint Local Transport Plan to travel easily around the county, whilst protecting its special landscape.

This will help shape the changes needed for a safer, more efficient and sustainable network for years to come.

The survey covers a range of transport related topics, such as:

  • Improving transport in rural areas and reducing congestion
  • Ensuring all ages and abilities can access services
  • Making it easier for people to be more physically active
  • Providing more opportunities for affordable, available and accessible public transport
  • Helping people feel safer on our roads and on public transport
  • Improving digital and real-time travel information

This work plays an essential role in helping the councils understand the different transport needs of the diverse communities who live and work in Dorset.

It will also ensure the councils can secure more national government funding for the improvements people want to see.

The survey is open for six weeks as part of the consultation process with paper copies available at Dorset Council and BCP Council libraries.

As well as the survey, there will be a series of roadshow style events held at venues across the county throughout January and February for people to share ideas and find out more.

Details of the locations, dates and times are:

  • Monday 29 January – Weymouth Library, 2pm to 6pm
  • Thursday 1 February – Ferndown Library, 10am to 2pm
  • Monday 5 February – Wareham Library, 1pm to 5pm
  • Thursday 8 February – Blandford Library, 10am to 2pm
  • Monday 12 February – Poole Library, 1pm to 5pm
  • Friday 16 February – Kinson Library, 1pm to 5pm
  • Saturday 17 February – Bridport Library, 10am to 2pm
  • Monday 19 February – Bournemouth Library, 2pm to 6pm
  • Thursday 22 February – Shaftesbury Library, 10am to 2pm
  • Saturday 24 February – Dorchester Library, 10am to 2pm
  • Monday 26 February – Sherborne Library, 2pm to 6pm
  • Wednesday 28 February – Christchurch Library, 10am to 2pm

The analysis of all the feedback received will take place during the spring, and reporting will follow in the summer.

Cllr Andy Hadley, Portfolio Holder for Climate Response, Environment and Energy at BCP Council, said: “This joint plan will set out how transport is delivered to meet some of the demanding challenges facing the area, covering all types, as well as road safety and maintenance.

“The new plan is needed to ensure we can travel safely and easily, whilst reducing carbon emissions and protecting the landscape that makes BCP and Dorset so special.

“All this must be done while maintaining economic growth and improving transport choices, accessibility, and experiences for all.”

Cllr Ray Bryan, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment for Dorset Council, said: “This is a joint plan that will be formed by the different needs of all residents and businesses in Dorset.

“We want to hear your views and valuable feedback to help our future transport system meet the expectations of everyone, and the challenges facing the area.

“This is where your journey begins to help us shape a better transport network across Dorset, so please do complete the survey.”

The survey, along with all the information you need on the Local Transport Plan can be found online here.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds to hold first show of 2024 at Lighthouse Poole

by Andy Diprose January 22, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are to hold their first show of 2024 at Lighthouse Poole on Sunday 17 March.

The intimate gig will mark Noel’s second at the venue, after first performing there 20 years ago with Oasis on 23 June 2004 – a warm up show ahead of headlining Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage just two days later.

Tickets go on sale from Friday 26 January at 9am GMT here.

Fans can look forward to a set including a wide selection of Oasis classics, as well as a cross section of material from the past dozen years of Noel Gallagher’s highly successful career as a solo artist with his band, the High Flying Birds.

The band are also set to play a sold out show at Portsmouth’s Guildhall on 20 March, just ahead of a headline performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall for the 24th annual Teenage Cancer Trust concert series on 21 March.

Summer 2024 will see Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds perform huge outdoor headline shows including Wigan’s Robin Park (Thursday 18 July), London’s Alexandra Palace Park (Saturday 20 July), as well as returning to Cardiff Castle (Wednesday 17 July), and Halifax’s The Piece Hall (Thursday 1 August) following sell out shows at these venues in 2022. Last remaining tickets available here.

The Poole announcement comes just weeks after Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ triumphant run of UK arena shows in December.

They capped off a huge end to 2023 with touring across three continents following the release of his fourth solo studio album ‘Council Skies’, a mammoth 26 date USA tour, and epic headline outdoor gigs including Crystal Palace Bowl and Brighton Beach.

The summer culminated with the band’s biggest ever headline gig to date, a celebratory homecoming show at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park on August Bank Holiday weekend.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ latest live performances have been described as “emotional and thrilling” by the BBC, “typically legendary” by the Daily Mirror, “effortlessly brilliant” by CLASH, “heroic” by the Evening Standard, whilst The i Newspaper confirmed, “Noel Gallagher’s gonna live forever”.

‘Council Skies’, which is widely regarded as Noel’s most complete solo statement to date,  includes ‘Open The Door, See What You Find’, ‘Pretty Boy’, ‘Easy Now’, and recent single ‘We’re Gonna Get There In The End’.

The album has received widespread critical acclaim and was featured in several Albums Of The Year lists including the likes of MOJO and Rolling Stone UK.

‘Council Skies’ is available now on CD, heavyweight vinyl with bonus 7”, LP picture disc plus various digital formats including a Dolby Atmos spatial audio version. All Council Skies formats are available here.

Dorset Police joins national neighbourhood policing week from January 22 to 28

by Andy Diprose January 22, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Neighbourhood police teams across Dorset are highlighting the work they do as part of a national Neighbourhood Policing Week of action.

The third national Neighbourhood Policing Week is a collaboration between the College of Policing and the National Police Chiefs Council.

Forces up and down the country are joining together to recognise the work of local policing teams and learn from each other.

From today, Monday 22 January, local policing teams across the county will be promoting activity that neighbourhood officers, police community support officers (PCSOs) and volunteers do to protect the public and keep people safe.

Each policing area across Dorset has a dedicated neighbourhood team, supported by a neighbourhood enforcement team and rural crime team that collaborate with partners to target activity, tackling issues that are important to local communities.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Neil Corrigan said: “Dorset Police is committed to delivering exceptional local policing, putting local communities at the heart of everything we do and to providing a safe county for everyone.

“Everyone who lives, works, and visits Dorset should feel safe and we will work tirelessly to keep Dorset one of the safest counties in the country.

“It is important to ensure that our teams are visible, connected, and accessible, through regular engagement opportunities.

“We appreciate that people prefer to engage with police in different ways, so it is vital that we provide as many options as possible for our communities.

“As well as offering more availability to attend police stations, we have introduced our Community Contact Points as a way for members of the public to meet their local officers and report incidents face-to-face.”

Community Contact Points are drop-in events scheduled across the Dorset geography.

Events are advertised on the Dorset Police website and local social media platforms.

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, David Sidwick said: “Neighbourhood Policing Teams are the backbone of community policing playing an integral part in tackling crime and by being visible building public confidence.

“Their presence in our communities not only deters potential offenders but also reassures residents.

“In Dorset, our NPTs work to tackle the issues affecting their local communities the most such as ASB, often working with the community to identify hot spots, playing a key part in early intervention, and acting as a trusted presence creating a safer Dorset for all.

“I hope this week will shed some light on the outstanding work our Neighbourhood Policing Teams do to reduce crime and bring offenders to justice.

“I’d like to thank all of our teams in Dorset for their continued hard work and dedication to making Dorset the safest county in England and Wales.”

Separating couples urged to avoid courtroom conflict as Family Mediation Week launches

by Andy Diprose January 22, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Couples who have decided to separate or divorce in 2024 are being urged to find out how to avoid courtroom confrontation to settle money and parenting arrangements with the launch of Family Mediation Week.

January often sees an increase in the number of people deciding to live apart as the various pressures that naturally go hand-in-hand with the Christmas period act as a final straw for relationships.

Michelle Bettell, pictured, Senior Associate and experienced Accredited Family Mediator at Bournemouth-based law firm, Steele Raymond, says Family Mediation Week is designed to raise awareness of the multiple benefits of family mediation.

The amicable process can help former partners agree what works for them while avoiding the court process with all the stress, delay and cost it brings.

Michelle said: “Many people emerge from the festive period feeling defeated by the pressures on relationships and finances that have been highlighted during the holiday period.

“We regularly find couples in this position simply don’t know which way to turn. Their life-changing decision to separate brings with it so many tough questions:

  • Who lives where?
  • Where will the children live, and how will we make sure we each spend time with them?
  • How will we sort money and the house?
  • What about debts and who will be paying toward household/family outgoings?

“Family Mediation Week shines a helpful spotlight on these tricky issues, offering separating couples information about their options as they look to make arrangements for parenting, property and finance.

“Family mediation is a process where an independent, professionally-trained mediator will facilitate discussions to help you work out what is important in your separation, the aim being to help you avoid courtroom confrontation.

“Professionally trained mediators help to empower you to decide how to create long-term solutions for your particular circumstances, rather than leaving it to a court to make decisions for your family.”

Family Mediation Week is from January 22 to 26.

Cherries suffer big home defeat to title contenders Liverpool

by Charlie January 21, 2024
written by Charlie

In a disappointing result for the in-form Cherries, Bournemouth lost 4-0 to title-chasing Liverpool after a brace from both Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez.

Bournemouth, who wore black armbands to pay respect to loaned-out player Jaidon Anthony after the passing of his mother in the week, started the game strongly but failed to register a single shot on target. Both teams struggled to get control of the game with the half’s best chance coming from a Justin Kluivert cross that narrowly missed a Bournemouth boot.

However, in the second half the travelling Reds showed their class when the Uruguayan Darwin Nunez finished off a superb Liverpool team goal. Bournemouth responded by bringing on Alex Scott for Luis Sinisterra and Lloyd Kelly for the debuting James Hill. However, Liverpool continued to up their performance levels when Portgual international Diogo Jota netted a double putting the game out of sight.

Bournemouth were then forced to end the game with 10 men as they ran out of substitutes when Max Aarons went down injured. In the 8 added minutes that no manager would have wanted to play, Nunez netted his second to relieve some building pressure around his finishing ability.

Bournemouth will look to get injured players returning and bounce back when they host Swansea in the FA Cup 4th Round on Thursday.
