written by Roy Martin

A man convicted of murdering 21-year-old Thomas Roberts in a stabbing in Bournemouth town centre has been handed a life sentence.

Lawangeen Abdulrahimzai, of Poole, was sentenced on Wednesday 25 January 2023 after being found guilty of murder following a trial at Salisbury Crown Court. He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum period of 29 years.

The fatal incident occurred at around 4.30am on Saturday 12 March 2022 outside Subway in Old Christchurch Road. The victim was with a friend, who became involved in a disagreement with the defendant over an unattended electric scooter.

Mr Roberts, who was acting as a peacemaker during the incident, was stabbed twice to his left side by Abdulrahimzai. The victim collapsed on the ground as the defendant fled the scene.

Members of the public provided first aid before police officers and paramedics attended and took over. Mr Roberts was taken to hospital and, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was sadly pronounced dead at 8.10am.

An investigation was launched and led by detectives from Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT).

Abdulrahimzai was identified through a phone that was left near the scene and subsequent CCTV enquiries and was arrested during the early hours of Sunday 13 March 2022.

During the course of the MCIT investigation, it was revealed that Abdulrahimzai had a previous conviction for murder in Serbia relating to the killing of two people in 2018. The defendant had fled the country before he was convicted in his absence. He also had also been convicted for drug offences in Italy in 2017.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Huxter, of MCIT, said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of Thomas Roberts and I want to thank them again for the dignified way they have conducted themselves throughout the investigation and court proceedings.

“I would also like to thank all those from Dorset Police and the prosecution team from the Crown Prosecution Service, who have worked tirelessly to achieve justice for Tommy and his family.

“Tommy’s family and loved ones have suffered an unspeakable loss as a result of this horrific incident involving a knife. If you believe someone is in immediate possession of a knife or offensive weapon, please dial 999. If you would like to report your concerns about a knife carrier or need some advice, please call 101 or visit dorset.police.uk and report it online.”

DCI Huxter added: “Matters relating to the defendant’s background and previous convictions have been shared with relevant agencies to ensure appropriate reviews are carried out and areas for learning are identified. However, my focus over the past nine months as senior investigating officer has been to gather evidence relating to the brutal murder of Thomas Roberts and ensure his killer was brought to justice for this offence.”

Small voluntary sector organisations in the local area are encouraged to take advantage of the ways Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council’s BH Coastal Lottery can help them and the community.

BH Coastal Lottery is a weekly lottery that raises money for the voluntary and community sector in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Residents can support the BH Coastal Lottery and good causes throughout the area by buying tickets, which cost £1 each, with the chance to win cash prizes of up to £25,000.

From every £1 BH Coastal Lottery ticket purchased, 50p goes direct to the good cause chosen by the ticket buyer and 20p into a pot from which local good causes can access funding for projects to help the local community.

Small voluntary and community organisations can benefit from this in many ways – by signing up be one of the good causes to directly benefit from lottery ticket sales or by applying for funding from the small grants scheme.

For this round, a maximum of £5,000 can be granted and priority will be given to projects where a small grant will make a significant difference.

The application form and eligibility criteria can be found here.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 26 February 2023.

Some examples of past projects helped include one-to-one support and community groups for vulnerable children, creation of the first ever Asian radio show in Bournemouth and schemes to provide debt and money management advice.

Councillor Jane Kelly, Lead member for Engagement said: “I would like to thank the generous residents who continue to use their hard-earned money to support local good causes via the BH Coastal Lottery. This valuable backing for the voluntary sector has nurtured many projects that are helping people in need.

“That’s why I would urge any small local good causes who need grant funding to apply to the BH Coastal Lottery before the deadline, to help them continue their valuable work and make a difference in the community.”

A man has been jailed following a road traffic collision in Bournemouth that left a pedestrian with life-changing injuries.

Richard Dean Caines, 47 and of Bournemouth, was sentenced to two years and ten months in prison at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 20 January 2023 after previously pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving a motor vehicle while unfit through drugs, driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road without third party insurance.

He was also disqualified from driving for six years and five months.

Dorset Police received a report at 11.19am on Tuesday 8 November 2022 of a collision involving a white Nissan Micra and a pedestrian in Poole Road, Westbourne.

Bournemouth Bay Run to celebrate 40 years of the event this year

by Roy Martin January 24, 2023
written by Roy Martin

This year’s Bournemouth Bay Run will celebrate 40 years of events by going back to the 80s.

The 40th Bournemouth Bay Run will take place on Sunday 2 April, 2023 and organisers are appealing for runners who took part 40 years ago to email any photos of running the Bay Run over the years to bay.run@bcpcouncil.gov.uk

Councillor Beverley Dunlop, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Vibrant Places said: “If you, or someone you know took part in the Bournemouth Bay Run back in the 80s, we would love to hear from you!

“This year, runners are encouraged to wear 80s running gear to mark the four-decade milestone.

“Bright neon colours were all the rage in the 80s and forget about leggings or tights, it was all about those really short shorts!

“And no 80s running outfit is complete without some fun accessories, so think ‘Flashdance’ and add headbands, leg warmers, or even fingerless gloves.”

David Prosser (photoed above) took part in 1990, he recalled: “My most vivid memories from 1990 are of running up past the BIC, to the top of the cliffs, which was around the 10-mile mark and proved a killer section!

“However, after the drop back down onto the promenade there were literally hundreds of supporters lining the route to the finish, spurring the runners on, so the incredible views and scenery along the route were capped off by the cheering crowd.

“I recall my time was 1:46 but the last 3 miles were the most challenging and rewarding.”

Kevin Scott CEO at media partner Hot Radio and Hot Gold Radio said: “This is a key date in our calendar, and we are delighted to be supporting this year’s Bournemouth Bay Run bringing our community together to raise vital funds for local charities as well as working off some of those winter lbs.

“We can’t wait to see runners going ‘full 80s’ along the prom to celebrate 40 years of running!

“We have fantastic DJs and warm-ups in place for you as well as freebies, fun, and so much more planned plus music to fit the era so don’t delay, sign up today.”

Get back on track with those resolutions and rock those neon colours with pride—just make sure to stretch properly before hitting the streets!

AFC Bournemouth signs winger Dango Ouattara from Ligue 1 outfit Lorient

by Roy Martin January 19, 2023
written by Roy Martin

AFC Bournemouth have signed winger Dango Ouattara on a five and a half year deal.

He’s the first addition of the Bill Foley era and joins the Cherries from Foley’s recent investment side Lorient in France.

Ouattara, 20, has shot to prominence this season, netting six goals and supplying six assists in 18 appearances in Ligue 1, his exploits helping Lorient to seventh place.

His displays included scoring in four successive games in September, Ouattara adding to his goal and assist tally in Lorient’s 2-2 draw with high-flying Monaco last week.

Ouattara had been attracting the attention of several clubs in Europe, including some of the Cherries’ Premier League rivals.

AFC Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake said: “We are pleased to secure the services of Dango, a promising and sought-after player with a great deal of potential.

“We have been monitoring him for a period of time and he fits the profile of the young, ambitious, hungry and hard-working player this club is looking to recruit.

“Bill has outlined his ambitious plans for the club and the signing of an exciting prospect like Dango is testament to the direction he is looking to take us.”

Ouattara, who made 15 appearances for Lorient last season, made his international debut for Burkina Faso during a friendly with Mauritania in December 2021.

He scored his first goal for his country in a 1-0 win over Tunisia in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in January 2022 and has hit five goals in 11 games for Burkina Faso.

Born in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouattara joined Lorient from Burkinabe club Majestic in the summer of 2020 before signing his first professional contract in May 2021.

Bournemouth and Poole’s seafront gets £18.2m government funding

by Roy Martin January 19, 2023
written by Roy Martin

BCP Council has been awarded £18.2m in government funding to help rejuvenate Bournemouth and Poole’s seafront.

The Levelling Up Fund cash will go towards key seafront projects over the next three years as part of the council’s Big Plan to create a world-class seafront.

Councillor Philip Broadhead, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Development, Growth and Regeneration said: “This is fantastic news for our whole conurbation. It has been an amazing team effort securing this money, and I’d particularly like to thank Conor Burns MP who has been instrumental in promoting these plans with government.

“Investing in our seafront is at the heart of our Big Plan and this funding will go towards much needed improvements and upgrades cementing our destination offering as one of the best in the country.

“This money will help improve seafront infrastructure and public spaces, ensuring it meets the needs and expectations of current and future generations.

“It will also see the creation of more jobs for local people, attracting new visitors down south and encouraging everyone to explore the rich coastal heritage and rural beaches beyond Bournemouth, attracting further investment along the award-winning coastline.”

The planned improvements include much-needed repairs to Bournemouth’s iconic Pier, extending its life and creating new opportunities to develop it further.

The East Cliff stabilisation works were also part of the bid, which would allow the promenade to be re-opened as a first stage, with longer term aspirations to reinstate a new cliff lift.

One of the big projects is the refurbishment and extension of the existing building at Joseph Steps into a new a RNLI lifeguard training and education centre as well as a community hub for everyone to enjoy.

Other plans submitted include seawall repairs at Hamworthy Park, which would secure the future of the promenade, and improvements to the public realm between Bournemouth West Cliff and Boscombe Pier which include more power and water services as well as a 5G infrastructure to allow for the development of further leisure facilities.

Councillor Beverley Dunlop, Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Vibrant Places commented: I’m truly delighted that we’ve received this funding for the seafront. It feeds into our seafront strategy and will be spent on projects that will have a significant impact on our seafront development, such as the rejuvenation of Bournemouth Pier which needs infrastructure repairs, and stabilising the East Cliff which will enable us to leverage funding and investment opportunities for a new cliff lift in the future.

“We submitted several cultural projects as part of the bid, including a public art heritage trail linking key heritage sites along the coastline, and studies to develop proposals for a Visual Arts Centre at Holes Bay, so I’m looking forward to seeing all these improvements come to fruition.”

Councillor Toby Johnson, Lead Member for Levelling Up and Skills said: “This funding award is great news for the development of the seafront, both from an economic point of view as well as a holiday destination. The economic benefits through these projects will open up further investment opportunities, creating more jobs for our residents along the way and improving people’s health and wellbeing with more opportunities to get outside and enjoy our outstanding seafront.”

Work on the proposals is expected to start later this year and will be delivered over the next three years.

University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity is calling on the Dorset community to come together and march for men’s health on Saturday 25 March.

The 5k and 10k events take place from 10am from Bournemouth Pier and are an opportunity for people of all ages, abilities and genders to directly contribute significant funds to men’s health projects at the Royal Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch hospitals.

Thousands of men from every part of our community face men’s health concerns such as prostate or testicular cancers.

Consultant urological surgeon, Kevin Turner said: “With every step our supporters take along the seafront, we can continue to improve health services for every man in our community.

“March for Men helps us to do so much more for our patients. We can purchase state-of-the-art equipment to streamline diagnosis and improve treatment, for example our blue light camera system which improves bladder cancer treatment.”

Fundraising manager, Lindsey Sturman, said: “This well-loved event is great for anybody looking for a good cause to get fit for. A man has been jailed for drugs offences after he was stopped by officers in Bournemouth town centre.

David George Hinchey, 40 and of Bournemouth, was jailed for 12 months at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 6 January 2023 for offences of being concerned in the supply of MDMA, cocaine and cannabis.

On Friday 25 June 2021, Hinchey was seen by officers acting suspiciously near to the Lower Gardens. Following a search, he was found in possession of a mobile phone, which was subsequently seized.

A few weeks later, on Tuesday 13 July 2021, an officer was on patrol in the town centre when he spotted Hinchey acting suspiciously again in the Lower Gardens.

Hinchey was detained for a search nearby and was found to be in possession of a number of small wraps of suspected class A drugs. He was subsequently arrested.

An examination of Hinchey’s mobile phones identified evidence that they were being used for the supply of class A and class B drugs.

Therefore, we are committed to doing all we can to disrupt the activity of those involved in supplying drugs.

“Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team regularly carry out patrols in the Lower Gardens and will act upon anyone seen to be acting suspiciously.

There were 57 people arrested on suspicion of drink driving, 22 on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, and six on suspicion of failing to provide a sample for analysis. The overall number was down on the same period the previous year. Some drivers were arrested on suspicion of multiple offences.

Of the 57 people arrested on suspicion of drink driving related offences, 44 were men and 13 were women. The youngest was 18 years old and the oldest was 70, with the average age of those arrested being 55 years old.

For suspected drug driving related offences, the driver was asked to complete a roadside swab. If this swab was positive, they were arrested and a blood sample was taken at custody for analysis. These bloods are currently being examined before any potential charges are brought.

Of the 22 people arrested on suspicion of drug driving related offences, 19 were men and 3 were women. The youngest was 20 years old and the oldest was 70, with the average age of those arrested being 32 years old.

During the campaign, the Force encouraged those out enjoying a drink during the festive period to plan how to get home without driving. The ‘Lift Legend’ campaign saw Dorset Police partner with over 30 venues across Dorset to offer free drinks to those who agreed to be the designated driver for their group.

Motorists were reminded of the potential consequences of driving while under the influence and the continuing effects that alcohol and drugs can have the morning after.

Superintendent Chris Naughton, of the specialist operations department, said: “Too many people who are otherwise law-abiding citizens, fail to consider the untold devastation that drink and drug driving can cause – those arrested were not necessarily your ‘usual’ suspects.

“Our figures show a 23 per cent reduction in the number of arrests this year versus last year, showing our relentless pursuit of criminality is working and our crime prevention message is getting through to drivers.

“This year, we continued to place a greater emphasis on encouraging those planning a night out to think about how they’re getting home. I would like to thank the venues that took part in our ‘Lift Legend’ campaign for their support in helping to keep their customers and wider road users safe.

“In the past I have been the person knocking on the door to inform relatives that their loved one has been killed as a result of a motorist who thinks it is okay to get behind the wheel while under the influence. This is something that I do not want my team to have to do during the festive period, or any other time of year.

“As in previous years, I would like to thank those members of the public who called us to report a drink driver. Our enforcement efforts will of course continue all year round and intelligence from the public is invaluable in keeping Dorset’s roads safe.”

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, David Sidwick said: “I am pleased to see a reduction in the number of people arrested for drink and drug driving during the winter campaign. Dorset Police is working hard day in, day out, to target those who choose to take the risk and get behind the wheel under the influence and their hard work is paying off.

“There is no excuse for road users to drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs. It is extremely dangerous and those who choose to break the law are not only putting themselves at risk but others too.”

If you suspect someone of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, please dial 999 immediately with the vehicle information and direction of travel.

For non-urgent matters, or to pass information about someone who regularly drives under the influence of drugs or alcohol, please go to www.dorset.police.uk or call 101.

Amanda Pearson chosen as preferred Dorset Police Chief Constable

by Roy Martin January 9, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Amanda Pearson has been chosen as the preferred candidate for Chief Constable of Dorset Police.

The decision was announced today by Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick, but will be subject to a confirmation hearing in February by the Dorset Police and Crime Panel.

If confirmed, she will take over the role from Scott Chilton, who will be leaving Dorset to become the new Chief Constable for Hampshire later in the year.

PCC David Sidwick said: “Amanda Pearson was the outstanding candidate. I wanted someone who had experience across a number of forces, had worked across the breadth of policing, understood the diversity of Dorset and the needs of an urban, coastal and rural community. Amanda has shown that through her many years of experience in policing, dealing with significant challenges, that she is very much the right person for the job.

“What Dorset needs in a Chief Constable is a tough crimefighter who will drive forward and deliver on the Police and Crime Plan and policing vision that is already fundamentally delivering for the people of Dorset. I want Dorset to be the safest county and I know that Amanda shares that ambition and would work hard in order to achieve it.

“If confirmed by the Police and Crime Panel, Amanda will look to take over leadership of the Force in March and I am looking forward to working closely with her and her team to deliver the public’s priorities for policing and Dorset being the safest county.”

Amanda Pearson has been in policing since 1993, across a number of forces including Hertfordshire, the City of London and Thames Valley. Most recently she has been with the Metropolitan Police Service, where she is currently serving as Temporary Assistant Commissioner and is the national Chief Constables’ lead for stop and search. Amanda became a chief officer in 2018, and lives in Ferndown.

Temporary Assistant Commissioner Pearson said: “I am honoured and delighted to be selected as the Police and Crime Commissioner’s preferred candidate to be the Chief Constable of Dorset. I am excited by the prospect of being Chief Constable of my home patch, working closely with our communities, partners and the PCC to ensure Dorset is safe for everyone who lives, works and visits here.

“I look forward to working with our officers and staff – every one of them makes a positive contribution to keeping Dorset safe, and together with our leadership team, I will ensure they are supported to provide an even better service.”

Amanda Pearson was chosen following an intensive formal application and interview process, in accordance with national regulations. The process included a shortlisting panel, an appointments panel, an external stakeholder panel, an internal stakeholder panel, a media exercise and presentation on how to further deliver on the PCC’s Police and Crime Plan based on the needs of the people of Dorset.

Six candidates applied and three went through to the final selection process following shortlisting.

The PCC added: “All six candidates are respected leaders from within policing and I am grateful for their contribution toward an extremely competitive process.”

BCP residents urged to check their photo ID ahead of May’s local elections

by Roy Martin January 9, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Voters in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area will need to show an accepted form of photographic identification at this year’s local elections.

The requirement to show photo ID at the polling station is a new condition, introduced under the UK Government’s Elections Act, which comes into effect for the first time this May.

BCP Council is urging Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole residents to make sure they are ready to vote in 2023’s local elections by checking now for an accepted form of ID and bringing it with them to the polling station in May.

Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK, EEA or Commonwealth drivers’ licence; and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass.

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

If voters don’t have accepted photo ID, they can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’ later this month.

Graham Farrant, Returning Officer at BCP Council said: “With council elections taking place in BCP on 4 May 2023, it is important that those who want to vote make sure they have an accepted form of ID. It may seem early but checking now means you will be ready to vote in May.

“Residents who do not have one of the accepted forms of ID will be able to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate either online or by completing a paper application form when this service launches in a few weeks’ time.”

Anyone who wants to have their say in the elections – or wishes to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate – must also be registered to vote by Monday 17 April 2023.

Residents can check to see if they are already on the electoral register and find out more information on BCP Council’s elections at: bcpcouncil.gov.uk/elections, by calling 01202 123400, or emailing elections@bcpcouncil.gov.uk

Those needing to register to vote can do so at: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Residents will not need to provide photo ID to vote by post. To apply to vote by post, application forms must reach the council by 5pm on Tuesday 18 April 2023.

Man jailed for 12 years following fatal road traffic collision in Bournemouth

by Roy Martin January 6, 2023
written by Roy Martin

A man who was convicted of manslaughter following a fatal road traffic collision in Bournemouth has been jailed.

Shaun Hall, 40 and of Derby, was convicted of manslaughter at Winchester Crown Court on Thursday 22 December 2022. He was sentenced on Friday 6 January 2023 to 12 years in prison for the offence.

On Friday 22 October 2021, an arrangement was made between Hall and a man to meet in Queens Road. Hall was driving a black Audi A4 and met the man that later that evening. Hall snatched a container from the man and drove off from the scene with the passenger door still open.

On Saturday 23 October 2021, the same man was in Suffolk Road with a group of people, including the 40-year-old victim Clare Gafan, and noticed the same Audi drive down the road. The man went to speak to the driver about the incident the previous evening.

As Hall – who was stationary in his car – noticed the man approaching him, he suddenly accelerated and drove towards the group. All apart from Clare were able to leap out of the way. The car collided with Clare and she sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Very sadly, Clare died in hospital on Monday 25 October 2021

Hall immediately drove away from the scene and did not stop or notify the emergency services of the incident.

Dorset Police then received a report from the ambulance service and a full investigation was launched by detectives into the circumstances of the collision.

Meanwhile, Hall drove out of Bournemouth and because his car was damaged, parked in a secluded car park where he waited until darkness to travel out of the county.

Following enquiries, Hall’s black Audi A4 was located and stopped in the Northamptonshire area in the early hours of Sunday 24 October 2021 and he was arrested.

A 42-year-old woman from Derby who was previously arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender was released from the investigation without charge and will face no further police action.

Hall also admitted a dwelling burglary in Southampton that was committed between 15 and 18 October 2021 and was sentenced to two years in prison for that offence. This sentence will be served consecutively to his jail term for the manslaughter offence.

Detective Inspector Mark Jenkins, of the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT), said: “First and foremost, our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Clare who sadly died following the collision.

“This incident was the subject of a detailed investigation, which allowed us to piece together what happened both during the collision and in the days leading up to it.

“The deliberate actions of Hall had fatal consequences for Clare and he showed no regard for what happened by leaving the scene in the way that he did. I am grateful for the efforts of the investigation and prosecution team in ensuring Hall faced justice.”

Clare’s family said: “Losing Clare has been hard for all of us and left a huge hole in our lives. Clare was an incredibly special woman who had a family that loved her unconditionally.

“Clare did not have a bad bone in her body. She had the biggest heart and would never have caused harm to anyone. She was loving, caring, funny and crazy, which is why we all loved her. She would always try and spread positive energy no matter what mood she was in, and she would always put other people before herself. This was true to form when we discovered that she had opted to donate her organs upon her death. She was truly selfless.”

Six months of work planned for the B3093 Wimborne Road in Poole

by Roy Martin January 5, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Temporary traffic lights are in operation on Wimborne Road in Poole at the junction with Fernside Road from January 8th at 7pm till July 2023.

The signals are there whilst the next phase of work on sustainable travel improvements along Wimborne Road takes place, with delays expected at peak times.

The junction of Darby’s Lane with Wimborne Road will be temporarily closed to cyclists during this period too.

The new layout of the New Inn junction will include dedicated space for cyclists linking to/from Darbys Lane, new crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists, traffic signal upgrades, and barriers removed for cyclists accessing Mellstock Road.

BCP Council is also widening pavements and converting them to shared use, providing more space for people cycling and walking around the junction. There will also be no left-turn from Fernside Road into Wimborne Road and the removal of the dedicated turning lane to provide space for the new crossings.

Other improvements include:

  • Improving the Serpentine Road roundabout with three new parallel crossings on raised tables, with footways converted to shared use for both pedestrians and cyclists
  • Installing new cycle lanes on both sides of Wimborne Road between Heckford Road and New Inn junction, protected from the carriageway by a kerb with raised table priority over adjoining roads. All parking will be removed along the western side of the road between Tatnam Road and New Inn junction to provide the space for the cycle lanes
  • Installing a new uncontrolled crossing point with tactile paving and dropped kerbs at St Margaret’s Road. The dedicated right-turn lane on Wimborne Road will be removed, but right-turn movements into St Margaret’s Road will still be possible
  • Upgrading the Tatnam Road/Garland Road junction, with raised table parallel crossings over the adjoining roads and toucan crossings installed to the south and north of the junction. The dedicated right-turn lanes on Wimborne Road will be removed, but right-turn movements into Tatnam Road and Garland Road will still be possible
  • Installing a new zebra crossing on Garland Road
  • Installing a new pedestrian crossing just north of Sherrin Close/Winterbourne Road junction
  • Introducing shared space at bus stops, with five stops being slightly relocated

See more details on the plans here.

Over four million visitors see Bournemouth and Poole’s Christmas lights displays

by Roy Martin December 22, 2022
written by Roy Martin

Bournemouth’s Christmas Tree Wonderland and the new Poole Christmas Maritime Light Festival have seen 4.4 million visitors so far this year with thousands more expected over Christmas.

These major, free-to-attend Christmas light festivals will be in situ until 2 January 2023 so there is still plenty of time to visit.

In Bournemouth, Christmas Tree Wonderland features a huge variety of light installations including numerous replica Christmas Trees from around the world. New for 2022 is the blue and yellow Kyiv tree which has received very positive and supportive reviews.

In Poole the light installations take on a maritime focus to celebrate the town’s important nautical history, with the sparkling giant anchor on Poole Quay being one of the focal points on the trail.

Both these Christmas festivals are organised by BCP Council with partnership funding from the Council and the local Business Improvement Districts. (BIDs). These are the Bournemouth Town Centre and Coastal BIDs for Christmas Tree Wonderland while the Christmas Maritime Light Festival is supported by Poole BID.

Other event sponsors include South Western Railway, Morebus and Wave 105.

Jon Weaver, Head of Destination and Events, BCP Council commented: “Our Christmas offering this year is bigger than ever before, with two light trails that weave through each town as well as the Yuletide Festival in Christchurch, organised and funded by Christchurch BID.

“These events are free to visit and as our footfall data shows, they bring residents and visitors from far and wide to our area, enjoying everything that is on offer. Both festivals help to support our local economy and maintain and raise the profile of the three towns at a really important time of the year.”

Bournemouth’s popular Christmas Tree Wonderland runs for six weeks in total and features a multitude of sparkling light installations in a festive light trail through the Town Centre, Lower Gardens and onto Pier Approach. A Christmas market selling a variety of gifts and festive food, a two-storey Alpine Bar and SKATE ice rink have also helped to draw in the crowds to enjoy some festive cheer.

In Poole, the brand-new Christmas Maritime Light Festival, has attracted people to Poole to enjoy the nautical-themed light installations which include a five-metre tall ship, a walk through bauble and some festive Christmas trees with maritime-themed decorations and Christmas choirs.

MT Rainey OBE appointed Chair of the Poole Arts Trust

by Roy Martin December 18, 2022
written by Roy Martin

Poole Arts Trust, the charity that runs Lighthouse, has announced the appointment of MT Rainey OBE as its new Chair.

The former Deputy Chair of Channel 4, she brings a wealth of experience from commercial roles in the creative industries that saw her honoured with an OBE for services to advertising in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. After eight years in the USA as Planning Director at Chiat/Day working with Apple and other early Silicon Valley companies, MT founded and was CEO of top advertising agency Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe. She also served as Vice Chair of Creative Skillset, the UK Sector Skills Council for the Creative Industries and is a Trustee of The Booker Prize.

“It’s a privilege to be asked to Chair this very loved, respected and important organisation,” says MT. “I’ve been coming to Lighthouse since I first had a home here in Poole in 2004 – in fact, it was one of the reasons I came. For an arts venue outside of London the quality and diversity of the programme is amazing.”

An avid consumer of the arts in all their guises, MT is looking forward to bringing her background in Brands and Marketing to bear in a sector she knows and loves so well.

“We have very loyal audiences, and while some elements of the programme bring in new audiences, I still think not enough people in this area know what a jewel in the crown they have on their doorstep and how many choices they have at Lighthouse on any night of the week. I’m hoping I can bring my specific expertise to bear on that particular challenge.”

Since joining the Board of Trustees in 2020, MT has been contributing her expertise to a range of projects supporting the team to develop the new website and recent brand refresh that has seen the logo updated, new signage and the adoption of the tagline ‘Different Every Day’.

“The team crafted that strapline and to me it brilliantly encapsulates the promise of Lighthouse,” she explains.

In common with venues across the country, Lighthouse continues to recover from the pandemic and audiences are returning in encouragingly greater numbers. But with rising costs in every aspect of the business, the worsening effects of the cost of living crisis, soaring energy prices and deepening economic hardship, there are enormous challenges to that recovery.

However, having recently retained Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation status, MT is certain Lighthouse will meet such challenges with characteristic creativity and ingenuity.

“Lighthouse is incredibly well led by Elspeth and her team who have steered it carefully and successfully through the various challenges of the last few years,” she says.

“The role of the Board now is to make sure that this precious asset is sustainable into this uncertain future, and I think that this will increasingly mean working together with other arts organisations to make the case for the importance of the arts in a healthy society. It will also be about making sure that we offer value for money to our audiences and reaching out to forge even deeper ties with our communities.

“So, it’s a serious job, but it’s also seriously good fun.”

Lighthouse Chief Executive Elspeth McBain is delighted that MT has accepted the role as Chair. She says: “We are thrilled to have MT Rainey as our new Chair of the Lighthouse Board, and already her extensive experience and expertise is having a real impact. I am excited to be working with her, and her enthusiasm and knowledge of the arts is a great asset.”

Upton Country Park opens its brand new Welcome Centre

by Roy Martin December 16, 2022
written by Roy Martin

Upton Country Park in Poole has a new Welcome Centre complete with a bio-diverse living meadow roof now open. It will serve as a front door to the park and provide improved facilities for visitors, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery Community Fund.

The Mayor of Poole, Councillor Tony Trent, will help open the new building.

It will boast interactive and immersive displays which will bring the park’s history to life, provide a glimpse inside the Grade II* listed Upton House, and will explore the importance of the varied landscapes within the park.

Three bug hotels have been created and framed in the building’s walls alongside swallow nest cups and bat boxes to encourage even more nature into the park and around the centre.

New unisex toilet facilities, accessible toilets and baby changing facilities will also be available at the centre, which will officially open its doors to the public from 10am on Saturday 17 December.

The centre was delivered as part of Upton Country House’s Discovery Project and has been supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery Community Fund, as part of its Parks for People programme.

Councillor Mark Anderson, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Place at BCP Council, said: “The Discovery Project continues to deliver significant improvements across the Park, benefiting our visitors, volunteers, and local schools.

“The opening of the Upton Country Park Welcome Centre is a significant milestone for the Project that has been made possible by funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund, BCP Council and the Friends of Upton Country Park.

“Construction of the centre was delivered by Greendale Construction Ltd, and contents overseen by Imagemakers. Visitors will now be able to learn more about the history of the estate, alongside the wonderful range of events, activities and wildlife that the park continues to support today.”

Stuart McLeod, National Lottery Heritage Fund Director for London and South said: “We are thrilled to celebrate the opening of the new Welcome Centre as part of the larger Discovery Project.

“This has been supported thanks to money raised by National Lottery players as part of the Parks for People programme. The £1.5million grant has helped to improve the visitor facilities, restore the historical features and reinstate lost landscapes at Upton Country Park. With community at the heart of the restoration, this ambitious makeover ensures this Grade II* listed building, and its surrounds will be enjoyed by visitors and the local community for many years to come.”

The Welcome Centre will play host to the start of the Christmas Woodland Adventure trail, running from 17 December 22 until 01 January 2023. Visitors will also be able to shop from the new retail offer, perfect for last minute Christmas shopping. With a range of products, there is a treat to be had on any budget.
