Darbys Lane improvements in Poole to start this month

by Roy Martin January 3, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Work on a series of improvements for walkers, wheelers and cyclists is due to start in Poole from next Monday.

It’s expected to lead to a month of disruption as part of Darbys Lane is closed. A signed diversion will be in place.

The work forms part of a sustainable travel route between Poole town centre and Merley.

They’ll also link into the new walking, cycling and bus facilities on Wimborne Road between the New Inn and Serpentine roundabout.

The planned improvements include:

* The widening of a shared use path and vegetation clearance leading to Trigon Bridge.
* Introduction of double yellow lines and dropped kerbs to improve access to the shared path.
* Installation of a raised table across the Darbys Lane/Heath Avenue/Popes Road junction to help lower vehicle speeds.
* The widening of footways and introduction of uncontrolled crossings on all arms of the junction to make it safer and easier for pedestrians to navigate the junction.
* New wayfinding signage installed along the length of the route.
* Installation of a raised table and parallel crossing on the eastern arm of the Darbys Lane/Dorchester Road junction to encourage lower vehicle speeds and provide a separate space for pedestrians and cyclists.
* Installation of a small section of cycle lane on Darbys Lane to make it safer and easier for cyclists to navigate the junction.
* Footway widening near Oakdale Community Park to install uncontrolled crossings to make it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross the road and encourage lower vehicle speeds.

The work is anticipated to start at the Heath Avenue/Popes Road junction, which will be under two-way traffic signals between Monday 15 January and Friday 9 February.

Part of Darbys Lane will be closed during this period with the diversion, via Dorchester Road, signposted.

Julian McLaughlin, Director for Infrastructure at BCP Council, said: “I’m pleased to see these improvements get underway – it’s part of our ongoing commitment to encouraging active travel wherever possible by creating a safer and more sustainable environment for residents and school children to get around.

“Our overall aim is to create a greener, healthier, better connected community, and these improvements are helping to make that happen.”

The improvements are funded by central government’s Transforming Cities Fund.

Separate eastern and western planning committees planned for BCP Council

by Roy Martin January 3, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Proposals to change the planning committee structure within Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being introduced ahead of the next full council meeting.

The new areas – Western BCP and an Eastern BCP – would allow more localised planning decisions and include 11 members for each committee.

The establishment of a Transport Advisory Group, which advises on traffic regulation orders and other transport-related matters, is also on the agenda at the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council meeting on Tuesday 9 January.

These recommendations follow discussions from the Constitution Review Working Group and the subsequent Audit and Governance Committee at the end of November 2023.

If approved, these proposals would change the council’s constitution, which sets out the rules and procedures which explain how council business is carried out and how decisions are made.

Cllr Vikki Slade, Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Dynamic Places said: “We made a promise to be an open, transparent and accountable Council and the proposed increase in member and public participation is evidence of that commitment in action.

“Reviewing the planning committee structure was part of that promise. The creation of a Western BCP and an Eastern BCP Planning Committee would allow for a more localised decision-making process with both committees meeting regularly to ensure consistency in the decisions being made.

“By introducing two committees we will encourage more community involvement and representation, with residents and ward councillors able to attend meetings that may have an impact on the area in which they live.

The Constitution Review Working Group also recommended the creation of a Transportation Advisory Group (TAG) which would deliver greater public engagement around Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO).

Gate closure trial planned aiming to reducing traffic in Poole Park

by Roy Martin January 3, 2024
written by Roy Martin

A trial gate closure to cars at Poole Park will start this month along with a public consultation on it being permanent.

From Wednesday 17 January 2024 the gate at the Whitecliff Road and Twemlow Avenue entrance and exit point of the park will be closed 24 hours a day to prevent motor vehicles entering or exiting.

This is an extension to the current closure in place Monday to Saturday, from 7.30-10am.

Whilst this trial gate closure is in place, the council will launch a four-week public consultation; seeking the views of local residents, businesses and visitors to the park on whether to make the closure permanent.

It follows a recent Experimental Traffic Regulation Order to close Keyhole Bridge in Whitecliff Road which remains open.

Cllr Andy Hadley, BCP Council’s Portfolio Holder for Climate Response, Environment and Energy said: “Trialling a closure of this entrance to the park alongside an online public consultation gives our residents the opportunity to comment, having seen how these proposed measures affects them and others.

“Reducing traffic in Poole Park could benefit both park users and the special wildlife who inhabit the park. The park also plays an important role in the council’s active travel network and this proposal aligns with our commitment to promote active and sustainable travel, and support everyone to live active and healthy lives.

“I would encourage people who do use the park to experience these changes before the middle of February and see for themselves the difference this trial closure may make to their daily lives.

“We are keen to consider the views of everyone who uses Poole Park, and once the consultation has closed all responses will be reviewed and considered ahead of a decision being made on a permanent closure.”

The other vehicle access and exit points, and parking (including disabled parking) in the park are not affected by this proposal.

The consultation will be open until midnight on Tuesday 13 February 2024 and the survey goes live on Wednesday 17 January on the council’s ‘Have Your Say’ website.

Bournemouth Airport to get £5m worth of improvements and increase destinations

by Roy Martin January 2, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Bournemouth Airport says it expects to handle more than one million passengers this year as Ryanair confirms its 19th destination from the town.

And to cater for the expected passenger growth, airport owners Regional and City Airports is investing more than £5m in new facilities, equipment, staff and training.

Ryanair has confirmed it will start twice weekly flights to the beach destination of Agadir in Morrocco from 1st April.

And tour operator TUI has already announced it will add a second aircraft at Bournemouth in 2024 with an extra 60,000 seats available, a 33% increase on its 2023 schedule. TUI has 14 destinations from Bournemouth with increased frequency planned on many routes next year.

Steve Gill, managing director of Bournemouth Airport, said: “We’ve embarked on a major investment programme to cater for the anticipated growth in passenger numbers. Before the pandemic we saw 800,000 passengers. Having exceeded that this year, we are confident of seeing more than one million in 2024.

“That’s a tremendous achievement and reflects the great range of destinations available from Bournemouth Airport and our commitment to providing the best possible experience for passengers.

“While our investment programme continues, we thank passengers for their patience and aim to complete the majority of work during the quieter winter months.”

In the coming months passengers will notice several improvements in the terminal as part of the £5 million investment programme. These include an upgraded security search area with new scanning equipment to relax the restriction on liquids and the need to take electronics out of bags, when the works are complete.

There will be a new airport information desk, improved baggage screening, an extra baggage retrieval area in the Arrivals terminal, more Border Force desks in Arrivals and improved queuing systems for passenger handling in both Departures and Arrivals.

Bournemouth Airport now has 36 destinations on offer. In 2023 it was ranked one of the top three airports in the UK for customer service, and it has won plaudits for the quality of service provided to disabled and less mobile passengers.

On your bike! BCP Council extends Beryl partnership to 2028

by Roy Martin January 2, 2024
written by Roy Martin

BCP Council is to extend a successful bike scheme to 2028.

Its partnership with Beryl will see 800 pedal bikes, 750 e-bikes, and 500 e-scooters available for instant hire across more than 400 parking bays.

For the first time, there are also plans to introduce a handful of innovative e-cargo bikes for local businesses.

The eco-friendly vehicles will be able to carry out sustainable deliveries and replace trips a van would normally do.

The Beryl initiative has been running across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole since June 2019.

Since the scheme was introduced it has generated more than 1,827,000 rides across nearly 6.4million kilometres – the equivalent of nearly 160 journeys around the Earth.

The journeys have had a significant impact on reducing traffic congestion across Dorset, replacing 650,000 private vehicle journeys.

They’ve also contributed towards getting people active and improving air quality, preventing more than 235 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Cllr Andy Hadley, Portfolio Holder for Climate Response, Environment and Energy at BCP Council, said: “Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole were the first large bike-share scheme deployment areas for Beryl, and working alongside us, they’ve nurtured it here really well over the last five years.

“We’re delighted they have been successful in their re-tender, which means we can retain the service across our towns and streets until 2028.

“As well as providing a reliable service, they have gone much further, helping train residents in how to use eScooters to give them the confidence to ride, regularly assessing the user experience and continuing to focus on how micro mobility can help those with disabilities.

“We look forward to further innovation from them as a key partner in supporting sustainable travel in our area moving forward.”

Beryl CEO and co-founder, Phil Ellis, said: “Obviously we are delighted to extend our partnership with BCP Council and see it as an indication of the great work we have done together to provide the region with the convenient, cost-effective, and simple-to-use scheme.

“The numbers show just how popular it has been and how many private car journeys it has taken off the road, contributing towards reducing road congestion, improving air quality and meeting carbon reduction targets.

“It’s also broken down the barriers to sustainable transport for a lot of people who otherwise may not have had access to, or have been willing to try getting around by bike, e-bike or e-scooter.

“Over the next five years, we will utilise the knowledge and experience we have gained to deliver some significant improvements, which will help make the scheme even more user-friendly and hopefully encourage an even greater take up of sustainable transport habits.”

The achievements of the partnership between Beryl and BCP Council saw it claim The Municipal Journal (MJ) Award for the UK’s Best Transport Decarbonisation Project in June 2023 – an accolade considered the highest level of recognition in the UK local authority community.

Beryl have also provided over 180,000 free rides to job seekers, students, low-income hospitality workers, refugees, cycle training organisations and other community group members across the conurbation as part of their Community Champions initiative.

Christmas tree collection service available from Julia’s House children’s hospice

by Roy Martin January 1, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Julia’s House children’s hospice is offering to collect unwanted Christmas trees once again this year in return for a small donation.

A team of volunteers will pick up trees across the area next week and take them for recycling. Last year over £7,000 was raised for the charity.

To take part, registration is required before January 8th.

Collections take part between 11th and 13th January from homes across Dorset, in postcode areas BH1-BH23 and BH31.

The real trees will then be taken to Adventure Pirate in Lytchett Minster and ECO Sustainable Solutions in Christchurch and recycled as chippings for use on local farms and community spaces.

It’s the third year the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice has run its tree collection service. For everyone signing up, there is the option to make a suggested donation of £10 to support the charity’s lifeline of care for local families.

Last year, Julia’s House recycled 630 Christmas trees and raised more than £7,000 with their collection service across both Dorset and Wiltshire.

Charlie Squires, from the fundraising team at Julia’s House, said, “We’re delighted to be running our charity Christmas tree collection again this year. When it’s time to take the baubles and tinsel down, we’ll be ready with our friendly team of helpers to collect and recycle your real tree from your doorstep. Any donations made to Julia’s House children’s hospice will make a vital difference in helping us to care for local children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions and their families.”

Help your ambulance service this festive period urges NHS trust

by Roy Martin December 22, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Please use ambulance services responsibly over the festive season.

That’s the message from the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) which runs Dorset’s ambulances.

It’s expecting a busy and challenging time across its 999 services with Boxing Day traditionally the busiest day over the festive break.

The trust is urging people to only call 999 when someone is seriously injured or ill and their life may be at risk.

For example, if someone is unconscious, not breathing or is bleeding heavily.

For non-life-threatening emergencies, appropriate care can be accessed by visiting NHS 111 online, contacting your GP or getting advice from a pharmacy.

Wayne Darch, Deputy Director of Operations at SWASFT, said: “We want everyone to enjoy the festive celebrations, and we’re urging local communities to use our services responsibly, and choose the right care for them.

“We want to be there for everyone that needs us in a medical emergency, to ensure this, we need to have crews available for patients with the most life-threatening conditions.

“Please only call 999 if someone is seriously injured or ill, for anything else, please contact NHS 111.

“I would like to thank our people and NHS colleagues who will be working throughout the Christmas and New Year period to help keep us all safe and well.

“Should you need their support, please be kind to them, they are working hard under huge daily pressures.”

Last Saturday’s AFC Bournemouth v Luton Town FC fixture will be replayed in full following the game being abandoned due to a medical emergency.

The match will be rescheduled for later in the season, with a date to be confirmed following consultation with relevant parties.

Luton Captain Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch having suffered a cardiac arrest and remains stable in hospital.

The decision to abandon the match in the 59th minute was made collectively between the match officials, players, managers from both clubs and the Premier League.

A Luton statement shortly after the abandonment read: “We are sorry to all supporters present that players from both sides were in no state of mind to continue with the game after seeing their much-loved team-mate and friend taken off like that, and staff could not carry on with managing the game in such circumstances having had to deal with the situation.

“Now is the time for all of our players, staff and supporters to come together as we always do and give our love and support to Tom and his family. Our thoughts are with him and them all.”

Urgent appeal launched by Homelessness Partnership BCP

by Roy Martin December 19, 2023
written by Roy Martin

An urgent appeal has been launched by the Homelessness Partnership BCP.

They say over 150 children in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole could spend this festive season in bed-and-breakfast hotels because they have no place to call home.

A Christmas Campaign is now underway and residents can help by volunteering their time, letting any property they might have to the Council, or by donating via the crowd-funding page below.

The recent successful delivery of new local housing has meant more families have a place to call home, and has helped to decrease the number of children who were formerly housed in B&Bs by over 20%.

There is further hope on the horizon, because BCP is one of six trailblazer regions for Homewards, the new initiative from Prince William and The Royal Foundation. It is already working to form a locally led coalition from across all sectors and businesses, to work with the organisations ‘at the front line’ to identify specific actions that will bring closer an end to homelessness in the area.

Chair of the Partnership Forum, Alistair Doxat-Purser, said: “Behind the numbers are individual families seeking to eat, sleep, do homework, relax, seek hope for the next day – all in a B&B room. As a partnership we are seeking all ways to change this situation for another family… and another family… and another. The reduction because of the new housing is really welcome, but we are committed to both helping more families make the step on into secure homes, and preventing yet more falling into the same situation.

“The thriving new relationship with Homewards, working hand-in-hand with local partners, is a driving force to help families across our three towns. However, we would love the support of organisations, businesses, faith groups, community teams and individual members of the public – please support the campaign and open the door to a future home for more families this Christmas.”

50 firefighters tackle residential fire in Bournemouth Town Centre

by Roy Martin December 18, 2023
written by Roy Martin

A residential property in Westover Road Bournemouth had to be evacuated overnight as 50 firefighters tackled a fire on the 5th floor.

Ten fire engines attended the incident at 1.30am along with Ambulance crews who supported one resident suffering from smoke inhalation.

An investigation found that the fire had started accidentally in a converted electric bike within one of the flats.

Station Manager Shaun Milton said: “We know that e-bikes and e-scooters are increasingly popular, but it’s vital that owners understand what to look for when buying them, and how to charge them safely.

“Anyone buying an e-bike conversion kit should always purchase from a reputable seller, and check that it complies with British or European safety standards. You should also check that the various components are compatible.”

Group Manager Ant Bholah, who attended this incident said: “Firefighters were alerted to the fire after smoke detectors within the building activated. Thankfully this early warning gave all residents the time to evacuate.

“The cause of this incident is thought to be accidental, but a fire investigation continues. More information about fire safety at home can be found on our website.”

Local company Morebus named UK Bus Operator of the Year

by Roy Martin December 17, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Local company Morebus has been named UK Bus Operator of the Year.

The recognition comes from this year’s UK Bus Awards, which also handed out two other titles to the Dorset company including Top Shire Operator.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to receive these prestigious awards – and they are thoroughly deserved by our excellent team, here at Morebus in Dorset and across our operators on the south coast,” said Morebus managing director, Andrew Wickham.

It is the third time we have won this accolade – with awards also in 2017 and 2018 – and only two other companies have ever achieved this. It is wonderful recognition for the talents of all our colleagues here – from our skilful engineers, to the managers who ensure everything runs smoothly, the cleaners who keep our buses looking good, and of course our drivers who are the daily contact point for our passengers.

The award is also a nod to the mammoth mobilisation of new routes across our region, just one day after Yellow Buses ceased trading here.

“To be named top operator is an incredible achievement – and I am very very proud of each and every one of my colleagues.”

More road improvements coming thanks to additional £604,000 government funding

by Roy Martin December 12, 2023
written by Roy Martin

£604,000 in funding has been awarded to BCP Council by the Government to maintain its roads, cycleways and footpaths.

The money, provided by the Department for Transport (DfT), is intended to help facilitate resurfacing works, preserve structures such as bridges and maintain street lighting and other crucial highway assets.

The same additional sum of £604,000 will be allocated to BCP Council again for the 2024/25 financial year from the DfT.

QUOTES

Councillor Andy Hadley, Portfolio Holder for Climate Response, Environment and Energy at BCP Council, said: “Whilst this does not give us strategic investment to improve our network, news of this additional funding allocation is helpful for our area and will support us in making further improvements to our highways that will directly benefit all road users.

“We have completed several significant infrastructure projects in recent years, but, given the financial challenges the council faces as well as rising material costs, this additional allocation is welcomed.

“Improvements to our our roads will help to smooth journey times, decrease carbon emissions and improve air quality. Ensuring footpaths and cycleways remain in good condition is important for public wellbeing.”

Julian McLaughlin, Director of Infrastructure at BCP Council, added: “We receive a lot of feedback from residents concerning the condition of our roads, so the announcement of this additional funding is hugely positive and will help accelerate our planned maintenance works across the region.

“Road defects can cause damage to vehicles, so directing this funding at improving the conditions of our roads and highways will help save residents the inconvenience and financial burden of costly repairs.”

BCP Council to consider new vision for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

by Roy Martin December 12, 2023
written by Roy Martin

A new vision to replace the previous Corporate Strategy and Big Plan for the area will be discussed by the Council.

Thousands of residents and stakeholders have helped shape a proposal for the three towns will be considered by the Council’s Cabinet on December 13 and the Council on January 9.

The proposed new Corporate Strategy is Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council’s four-year vision for a place where people, nature, coast and towns come together in sustainable, safe and healthy communities.

Residents and stakeholders helped shape the proposed new strategy after they fed into a consultation, which involved discussion groups, an online survey and a series of roadshows led by BCP Council staff over late summer and autumn.

The new Corporate Strategy aims to create an open, transparent and accountable Council, which puts our people at its heart. It has two key priorities.

Councillor Vikki Slade, Leader of BCP Council and Portfolio Holder for Dynamic Places, said: “We have listened to our residents about what is important to them and the input we have received has made a real difference.

“I’m grateful to everyone who took part – their ideas and suggestions have helped make sure our people and communities are put front and centre in our plans.

“I’m pleased to say that overall, the priority themes of ‘People and Communities’ and ‘Place and Environment’ were endorsed by our residents.

Armed police to patrol the streets in Bournemouth this Christmas

by Roy Martin December 12, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Neighbourhood policing teams, officers from the Operations command – such as firearms officers and dog handlers with their four-legged colleagues – as well as other specialist teams will be patrolling in crowded areas to provide reassurance to the public.

Chief Inspector Darren Harris, of Dorset Police, said: “As part of our policing activities throughout the season, we will be visibly patrolling in many areas where hopefully a lot of residents and visitors are enjoying what Dorset has to offer during this festive period.

“People may also see our firearms officers being on foot patrol, which means they may be carrying their long-arm weapons. There is absolutely no suggestion that there is any increased risk to our county or any specific events. This way of patrolling just gives them a greater flexibility to respond to incidents.

“During our high-visibility patrols we are also assisted by our council colleagues, including CSAS officers (community safety accreditation scheme). We very much hope that everyone is able to enjoy the festive season – our officers are here to deal with anyone seeking to cause disruption.

“For example, anyone acting anti-socially in our communities will be dealt with as we recognise this is closely linked to how safe people feel. We want to give reassurance that our officers are committed to keeping our county safe.

“Please approach them if you have any concerns or something doesn’t feel right. Everyone can play their part and look out for each other – trust your instincts.”

Seasonal campaign launched helping residents stay safe this Christmas

by Roy Martin December 10, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Dorset Police has launched a new seasonal campaign reminding residents how to avoid being the victim of crime this Christmas.

From not leaving gifts on display in our cars, to keeping doors and windows locked, the force will be out on the streets with some friendly advice.

Superintendent Gavin House, the Neighbourhood, Partnership and Safeguarding lead said: “this is one of the busiest times of year for shoppers and retailers and there are simple prevention measures people can take to make it harder for thieves.

“We are urging retailers to think carefully about where they place their most valuable stock; to keep it away from doors and window displays and to place it where staff can best keep an eye on it. We are urging shoppers to be vigilant to people who may want to steal their wallets and other valuables from their bags, so keep them closed at all times, especially in crowds.”

Christmas Tree Wonderland switched on in Bournemouth for 2023

by Roy Martin November 17, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Thousands of lights are now illuminating the Lower Gardens in Bournemouth following the launch of Christmas Tree Wonderland today.

Bournemouth One has been taking a look around the gardens from the Square to the Pier, and you can see our montage of photos here.

New for this year is a tunnel of light at the start of the trail thanks to the Council and Coastal Business Improvement District.

Bournemouth’s Santa Express is another addition for the kids, who can enjoy a train ride around the giant Santa illumination in front of the bandstand.

The centrepiece walk-through tree is lit and decorated with Christmas tree decorations this year, with laser lights shooting from the bottom of the tree. A new walk-through Christmas present completes the trail on the seafront.

The Christmas Markets opened yesterday featuring a range of festive wares alongside some tempting food and drinks, visitors can grab an indulgent hot chocolate to warm up as they wander through the trail, or a festive tipple from the Alpine Bar.

The Skate Ice Rink is also making a welcome return this year. Visitors can glide across the ice surrounded by the twinkling illuminations, with younger visitors enjoying a seat as they’re pushed around the open-air ice rink.

On Bournemouth Pier, little ones can post their letters to Santa, and the whole family can enjoy the Christmas lights from high up on the Big Wheel at Pier Approach.

For that real apres-ski feeling, Picnic on the Piste, located in the Westover Gardens area of the Lower Gardens, has live music, festive food and drink, and a glowing stepping stones trail.

Things to do in Half Term across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

by Roy Martin February 4, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Love is in the air this February half term with Valentine’s crafts, love trails, a wall of hearts and more to discover across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Keep the whole family entertained for hours with our handy guide to half term activities that will stop the ‘I’m bored’ sentences in their tracks and ensure a fun-filled February.

Get crafty at the Russell Cotes Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth from 14-16 February where you can make your own Valentine’s card to give to your loved one or take a love trail through the house and garden from 11-19 February.

True romantics can get swept up in Annie and Merton’s love story (the original owners of the museum building), from 5-8pm on 16 February with love letter writing, student artwork, live music, themed talks and Japanese inspired cocktails run by Arts University Bournemouth students.

Over at Highcliffe Castle in Christchurch, create your own wreath of hearts to give to your special someone from 14-16 February, take part in a ‘Things that we Love’ trail from 12-16 February, or add your special message to their ‘Wall of Hearts’ and watch the love grow.

History is the theme for the activities at Upton Country Park in Poole, where you can journey on an Historic Explorer Trail, discovering important characters in the history of the Upton Estate along the way from 11-19 February, or make some historic top hats and bonnets in the craft shed.

Get muddy with The Parks Foundation who have activities planned for a park near you! Take part in some community gardening at Winton Recreation Ground, Bournemouth or Alexandra Park, Poole on 11 February while enjoying the great outdoors, or build a bug house at one of ten parks across the conurbation from 13-17 February.

Get ready for spring by embarking on a spring creature themed trail at Kingfisher Barn Visitor Centre in Bournemouth from 11-19 February and enjoy the picturesque sights as you amble along the River Stour.

Crabbing at Mudeford Quay makes for the perfect free family day out. Wrap up warm, pack a picnic and prepare for a fun-filled afternoon, or venture into Christchurch and explore amongst the castle ruins.

Challenge your friends to a round of mini golf in Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens and take advantage of their alternative Valentine’s promotion ‘Mates Dates’, where you can get 2-for-1 on a game of mini golf upon purchase of a drink from the nearby Hedgehog Kiosk.

Visit Bournemouth Aviary and enjoy a warming drink from the nearby Picnic Park Deli, then wander along the tree trail in Bournemouth’s beautiful gardens to while away an afternoon.

Plan a day out in Poole Park, where you can try out the new Poole Park Railway, have fun in one of two playparks, enjoy a walk around the big lake or just relax and let the kids tire themselves out scooting around the cricket pitch!

Councillor Beverley Dunlop, Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Vibrant Places commented:  “We’ve got so much going on over the half term that will delight and amuse all ages, the only problem will be choosing what to do!

“Spending time with your children – and in my case my grandchildren as well, provides so much joy whatever the weather – and getting outside in the fresh air is good for your wellbeing, so I encourage everyone to put their wellies on, go on a trail or two, and enjoy the activities on offer during this week.”

And if any parents want to start the half term off with a bang, they can let their hair down at the Woodpecker Café in Queen’s Park, who will be hosting their ‘Anti-Tines’ Rock-N-Roll Quiz and Bingo night on Friday 10 February at 6pm, with a tantalising menu of pizza and cocktails for the evening, a winning combination to prepare for the week ahead if ever there was one!

BCP Council awards permanent local bus and school contracts to Morebus

by Roy Martin February 1, 2023
written by Roy Martin

Three bus service contracts have been awarded to Morebus following a competitive tender process.

Morebus will now operate the following services;

Service 18 (From Wednesday 15 Feb)
Bournemouth, Westbourne, Upper Parkstone, Sea View, Foxholes Estate, Canford Heath, Waterloo Estate, Broadstone and West Way.

Service 33 (From Wednesday 15 Feb)
Bournemouth, Boscombe, Queens Park, Bournemouth Hospital, Southbourne and Christchurch.

Service 36 (From Wednesday 15 Feb)
Kinson, West Howe, Bournemouth University, Glenferness Avenue, Bournemouth and Talbot View Estate.

These services are currently operated by Xelabus, until Tuesday 14 February.

The start dates for the Morebus contracts mean continuity of service for all passengers. The timetables for each service will not change.

Morebus will also continue to operate the following school bus services;

Service 46 (from Monday 20 Feb)
Throop, Moordown, Winton, Charminster, Bournemouth Station, Boscombe and Pokesdown to Avonbourne Academies.

Service 81 (From Monday 20 Feb)
Charminster, Castlepoint, Townsend and Littledown to Avonbourne Academies.

Service 744 (from Tuesday 21 Feb)
Poole Old Town and Baiter to Oakdale Junior School.

These new contracts replace temporary arrangements which were introduced by the council for six months to ensure services remained for residents following the sudden demise of the previous operator Yellow Buses in August 2022.

Councillor Mike Greene, Portfolio Holder for Sustainability and Transport, said: “We are delighted to award these important bus contracts to Morebus and have pulled out all the stops to ensure that these vital routes remain in operation.

“Reliable public transport is essential to the success of any area. It was vital that we found a way to keep buses that directly serve places such as Fernbarrow Estate and West Way in Broadstone running smoothly.

“Our hard work on this – and close partnership with Morebus – means there will be no break in service and that it’s now possible for residents to travel sustainably around our area using one company.”

Andrew Wickham, Morebus managing director, added: “I am delighted to add these important public routes to our network across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole – and to continue operating the school services we were entrusted with last year.

“Our team has been doing a tremendous job, since adding new routes in 2022, following the end of Yellow Buses’ operation here.

“We are delighted to be working with BCP Council to not only safeguard these school and public services, but to ensure taking the bus is an attractive alternative to travelling by car. This will play an important role in reducing congestion and improving the air we breathe on the south coast.

“In order to do this, we have invested heavily in new buses with low emissions Euro 6 engines over recent years, each featuring the latest in on-board technology – including usb chargers for smart phones and tablets, and tap on, tap off payments. Our pioneering app also offers technology so powerful, those travelling with us can save their regular journeys, mark bus stops or routes as their favourites, track exactly where their bus is at any given time and, of course, buy their tickets.

“We won’t rest on our laurels though – and will continue to look for new ways to improve our offering here.

“I am delighted that Morebus will now be providing a comprehensive service across the region, giving people better value-for-money and a joined-up bus network our customers – old and new – can rely on.”

Morebus has also been awarded the contract for the Route ONE Town Centre from Poole Bus Station to the Hospital, Train Station, Quay and Baiter Park. This service will also remain unchanged.

The Dolphin Cycle Hub, located in the Dolphin Shopping Centre in a unit opposite Primark’s entrance, comes as a result of BCP Council partnering with Legal and General Investment Management Real Assets, the owners of the Dolphin Centre.

The cycle hub model will be provided by Spokesafe and will include secure parking for up to 34 bikes, scooters, cargo bikes and non-standard cycles safely, providing 24-hour access for members.

Funded by the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund, the modern facility is part of BCP and Dorset Councils’ Transforming Travel programme to create and promote greener, healthier, better-connected travel options across south east Dorset, particularly for shorter journeys. The programme aims to transform local travel, reduce road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and bring economic and health benefits across the conurbation.

LGIM, in partnership with BCP Council, identified a need for a secure public cycle storage hub within Poole to encourage people to cycle when visiting the town. The Dolphin Centre was chosen as the ideal location for the brand-new facility due to its high footfall from local residents, shoppers, employees, and commuters who use both the bus and train station for onward travel.

Councillor Mike Greene, BCP Council’s portfolio holder for transport and sustainability, said: “We’re delighted to have secured money from central government’s Active Travel Fund to invest in this innovative cycle storage facility at The Dolphin.

“We know how important it is for people to have access to safe, reliable places to lock their bikes. It’s an essential part of encouraging and enabling people to cycle to work, the shops, education or leisure. We can’t wait for this fantastic new cycle hub to open and hope that it’s the first of several to be installed across the BCP Council region. We look forward to as many people as possible using it.”

Greg Westover, Fund Head of Retail and Leisure at Legal & General, said: “The Dolphin Cycle Hub is for everyone in our community, from shoppers to residents, workers, and retailers. At The Dolphin, we are committed to being environmentally responsible and are always looking for new ways to promote sustainable alternatives that have a positive impact in the community.

“We’re really pleased to be partnering with BCP Council on this project because The Dolphin Cycle Hub complements the work that is already being actioned in the locality to improve cycle routes and provide more sustainable travel options. Not only will the cycle hub make a significant difference to our local environment, it will also reduce congestion on our roads and boost wellbeing by encouraging people to get outside and move. We believe all initiatives which support wellbeing are vitally important, particularly at this time of year.”

The Dolphin Cycle Hub will offer a range of affordable and flexible storage pricing options from as little as £1 per day for Pay As You Go bookings, with cheaper options available for weekly and monthly memberships.

There will be a repair station and pump in the hub, as well as personal storage lockers. Electric charger points will also be available for members to use while storing their e-bikes.

BCP Council deactivates Severe Weather Emergency Protocol

by Roy Martin January 28, 2023
written by Roy Martin

The Severe Weather Emergency Protocol, a crisis response that supports people sleeping rough outside, has been deactivated across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole following 10 days of very low and sub-zero temperatures.

The support is usually triggered when cold weather warnings are issued, but recent extreme hot weather has also called for urgent action.

During any severe cold weather response, extra accommodation is made available across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole so that nobody has to sleep on the streets during extreme weather.

St Mungo’s Outreach Team carried out shifts throughout this latest SWEP period, finding anyone who was sleeping rough and encouraging them to take up the offer of accommodation.

This support included helping individuals into emergency hotels, with some people placed into accommodation with 24-hour support, depending on specific needs. 67 people were helped off the streets in the recent cold weather. 38 of these individuals have remained in that accommodation, many of which having previously declined offers. These numbers are similar to those supported the last time SWEP was activated at the end of last year.

BCP Council has a robust, compassionate and proactive approach to dealing with street homelessness, while also reporting problems and keeping everyone in the community safe are also critical factors.

Cllr Hazel, Allen, Lead member for Homelessness at BCP Council, “SWEP is a great example of how important partnership working is when dealing with this issue.

“Our teams work very hard all year round to help people move off the streets and out of danger including at times of severe weather. We thank our partners at St Mungo’s and across the charity and voluntary sectors for their continued dedication and tireless efforts towards our shared goal of ending homelessness.”
