“New and different” hospitality venue says its approach is proving to be a big hit

by Andy Diprose January 19, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

A new hospitality venue says its blend of dining, drinking, entertainment and wellness activities is bringing something new to the sector – and proving a hit.

Rockwater Village opened its doors for business at Branksome Chine last September.

During the day, visitors can enjoy yoga, fitness classes and coffee catch-ups with dining from breakfast to evening from Michelin-trained chefs.

At night, an events programme moves the relaxed daytime vibe up a gear.

It’s already featured intimate gigs from high-profile names such as Fatboy Slim and James Bay.

Rockwater says its approach to hospitality services and wellness initiatives has proved popular with hundreds of people every month taking part in a variety of wellbeing-focused events.

The venue’s winter timetable of classes includes several Pilates and yoga sessions on its roof terrace each week as well as early morning swim clubs.

A partnership with Bournemouth-based Who Dares Gyms has brought bootcamps and run clubs to the seafront, too.

Rockwater has also selected local experts to run regular workshops and classes for both Open Water members and the public on a ticketed basis.

They include Cassey Lee, a Poole-based personal trainer.

She leads Rockwater classes including a ‘Reset and Detox’ afternoon which provides attendees with a reset for mind and body.

Other local practioners, Ellie Loves and Joe Aston, facilitate ‘So Talk’, a safe space for attendees to chat and listen with no boundaries, themes, or judgment.

Luke Davis, Rockwater’s CEO, said: “Having been around the hospitality industry for many years, I’ve seen first-hand how venues can become a hub for the community and a second home for many patrons.

“There are plenty of night-time venues that provide a luxury dining and social atmosphere for customers, and plenty of coffee shops and social clubs that are great places to unwind during the daytime.

“At Rockwater, we are doing something new and different by providing all these things and more to customers, all packaged into one scenic setting where groups can truly connect and enjoy together from dusk till dawn.

“We’re setting a new trend in hospitality by creating a space where our guests can pursue their personal ambitions, whether those are wellbeing led, socially, or from a working perspective, so it’s great to see so many customers already embracing the Rockwater Life.

“We want to take things even further in 2024, so we will be investing at least £250,000 into Rockwater’s wellness initiatives over the course of the year.

“Through Rockwater, I set out to create a luxurious environment that captured the spirit of a private members’ club, but which was accessible to and inclusive for the whole community.

“Wellness is at the heart of the beachside lifestyle, and by creating a welcoming concept which brings together people to eat, drink, connect, play, and be inspired, we’ve set a clear benchmark for the future of the industry.”

Branksome is the second Rockwater. The first was in Hove, Sussex, and a third is planned for Sandbanks later this year.

Petition calls on government to return some of the millions taken in Dorset oil tax

by Andy Diprose January 19, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

A petition has been launched calling on the government to return to Dorset some of the millions of pounds taken in tax on oil and natural gas from Poole Harbour.

Retired academic Mike Plummer from Poole says that to date over 515 million barrels of oil has been extracted through Wytch Farm and sold for more than £11.2 billion.

The Treasury receives 40 per cent tax on all profits made by oil companies.

Mike said the Shetland Islands have received £380 million from the government although the nearest oil field is 120 miles away.

By contrast Dorset had not received a penny but even a fraction of the money taken in tax could solve the financial problems faced by BCP Council.

He said: “I’m talking about Dorset oil coming from Dorset soil.

“It’s high time that Dorset people receive some financial benefit for the oil and gas that’s been extracted since 1979 from the Purbecks.

“Rather than levelling up north, why don’t they start levelling up down the south in Dorset?”

Mike, pictured, said he hoped to get up to 20,000 people to sign his petition.

He would then organise a march up to London and demand a meeting with Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

The petition can be found here.

Plastic fantastic! Arts University Bournemouth awarded £1.6 million research grant

by Andy Diprose January 18, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Arts University Bournemouth has been awarded a £1.6 million grant for research into plastics innovation.

The five-year grant, from Research England, aims to support small but outstanding research units.

It will allow the university to create a new research centre: Plastics Innovation and Curation (PlastIC).

The centre will explore how plastics degrade over time or behave in different environments.

The university says it will result in research that will have international relevance to both museum collections and modern manufacturing.

The innovative new venture will link the expertise of AUB’s Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP) with the design, manufacturing and testing capabilities of the Creative Technologies Research Group based at AUB’s Innovation Studio.

Dr Christian McLening, Director of Research and Development at AUB, will lead the new centre.

He said: “The centre’s purpose is two-fold.

“On the one hand, we’re curating and preserving a collection of plastics that make up our own rich product history.

“With the increased focus on alternative materials, there’s a danger that we’ll lose iconic plastic products from our everyday lives.

“On the other hand, we’re exploring the environmental future of plastics and the role it plays in sustainability – when’s the best time to use plastics to ensure we’re developing better products and using plastic wisely.

“What happens to plastics in 20 years’ time?

“As it’s a relatively new material, we don’t know what’ll happen to these products in the future, and to prepare for the future it’s vital we know this.

“Every household has a plastic bucket that’s become faded and brittle over time, but we don’t know why.

“That’s one of the many things this research centre will be looking to achieve, to understand how plastics behave and how this can shape and better design the products of tomorrow, specifically with reuse, recycling and repurposing in mind, to give them longevity.”

Professor Paul Gough, Principal and Vice-Chancellor at AUB, said: “This is a huge prize for the University and for all our environmental futures.

“Understanding the preservation of ageing plastics is of international importance for those objects made of the material, and for the sustainable development of new plastics-based products.

“The research emanating from this large grant will be of immediate relevance to global design and manufacturing industries as well as museums, of which MoDiP at AUB is a national institution.”

The Expanding Excellence (E3) funding awarded to AUB will allow the creation of a materials lab to test and identify different types of plastics, coupled with an enhanced knowledge archive to support the conservation of plastics in museum collections.

It will also provide specialist materials knowledge, informing how industry selects their materials for manufacturing.

The funding will further support the development of a range of CPD courses to improve specialist knowledge around plastics conservation for both industry and heritage sectors and provide a consultative offer on plastics identification.

Sandbanks campaign group raises sufficient funds to launch rival scheme for hotel site

by Andy Diprose January 17, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Residents of Sandbanks have raised the money to officially launch a rival plan for the historic Haven Hotel site to prevent three blocks of flats being built there.

A crowdfunding page has so far received double the target amount of £15,000 to cover architects fees and ancillary costs.

Sandbanks Community Group (SCG) says that having battled against the flats scheme for over six years they now have one chance to provide an alternative scheme of a replacement hotel instead of flats.

More than 6,000 letters of objection, and an online Save Sandbanks Facebook campaign against the flats was set-up before planning permission was rejected last summer.

However, an amended scheme was submitted to BCP Council which is yet to be determined.

As a result, SCG embarked on its own plans, commissioning top architect Philip Gumichdjian to produce a rival plan, named Project Marconi.

A number of hotel groups are said to be interested in backing the scheme by entering into negotiations with the owners if the SCG plans get the go-ahead.

The rival scheme retains the site’s mature trees and the hotel with all associated facilities, employment and business opportunities.

Crowning the proposed hotel will be a tower of suites topped by a beacon lighting the entrance to the harbour.

It’s described as a fitting nod to Marconi and his radio mast which stood in the same location over 130 years ago.

Norman Allenby-Smith, Chairman of Sandbanks Community Group, said: “This scheme will add significant utility and value to residents and visitors to the peninsula.

“It appears to be lower impact in environmental and sustainability terms than previous proposals and will doubtless become a much-needed iconic harbour entrance.

“A natural rival to the great Sydney harbour approach.”

One of the founders of the Friends of Poole Park has criticised the closure of an entrance to vehicles from today.

The Whitecliff Road and Twemlow Avenue entrance and exit is closed 24 hours a day for a trial period.

A four-week public consultation also begins today on whether to make it permanent.

BCP Council says reducing traffic in the park could benefit both users and wildlife.

Have your say as controversial closure of one of Poole Park’s entrances begins today

by Andy Diprose January 17, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

The controversial closure of one of Poole Park’s entrances starts today.

The Whitecliff Road and Twemlow Avenue entrance and exit will be closed to vehicles 24 hours a day for a trial period.

A four-week public consultation also begins today on whether to make the closure permanent.

BCP Council says reducing traffic in the park could benefit both users and wildlife.

But opponents have attacked the move and are holding a demonstration this Saturday lunchtime.

The trial closure follows a recent Experimental Traffic Regulation Order to close Keyhole Bridge in Whitecliff Road which remains open.

Other vehicle access and exit points, and parking (including disabled parking) in the park are not affected by the trial scheme.

The consultation is now open until midnight on Tuesday 13 February 2024.

The survey is on BCP Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ website.

Bournemouth company fined £100,000 for making unsolicited marketing calls

by Roy Martin January 16, 2024
written by Roy Martin

A Bournemouth company has been fined £100,000 for making over half a million unsolicited marketing calls to people who had registered with the Telephone Preference Service.

Skean Homes Ltd, which claimed to help improve energy efficiency and reduce household bills, instigated the calls between March and May 2022 which resulted in 31 complaints.

After an investigation by the Information Commissioner’s Office, Skean Homes refused to take responsibility for the unlawful marketing calls, blaming a technical error and misunderstandings.

It is against the law for organisations to make marketing calls to anyone signed up with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and Corporate Telephone Preference Service (CTPS), which operate a “do not call” register, unless the individual or business has explicitly consented to receive these calls.

Andy Curry, ICO Head of Investigations, said: “People register with the TPS for a clear reason: to stop unwanted marketing contact and protect their privacy. Both these companies have not only broken the law by failing to check the ‘do not call’ register, but also caused distress and disruption to those they bombarded with unwanted and unlawful calls.

“These fines should send a clear message that companies cannot use third parties or multiple phone numbers to avoid detection and taking responsibility for illegal calls. We will take decisive action to ensure the public are protected from nuisance marketing.”

In addition to the fines, the ICO has also issued an Enforcement Notice to both companies, ordering them to stop calling people registered with the TPS, or who had previously objected to such calls.

Community projects across Bournemouth and Poole benefit from £316,454 cash boost

by Andy Diprose January 16, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

New children’s play equipment in a park, a colourful mural at a hostel and a refurbished foodbank are just some of the improvements made possible by a cash boost to community projects across Bournemouth and Poole.

Some 28 projects, spanning 16 wards, have been awarded £316,454 via the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Neighbourhood Portion Fund

The fifth round of funding, generated from new developments, was awarded by BCP Council to projects that will improve local community facilities and neighbourhoods.

To date, £1,550,031 has been allocated to 123 community projects through the CIL fund.

Residents, businesses, and community groups were invited to submit ideas for local projects which will improve, benefit and shape the development of their community.

Grants of varying amounts have been distributed to a broad range of project bids.

Facilities at Knyveton Gardens have been enhanced with a grant of £50,000 to improve children’s play equipment, general accessibility and vegetation management alongside upgrades to signage, notice boards and toilet provision.

An extra climbing frame has been installed at St George’s Play Area in Oakdale with an £18,750 cash injection while a large-scale mural now adorns the outside of St Paul’s Hostel in central Bournemouth, thanks to a grant of £9,972.

The team at Poole Foodbank have used a £9,700 grant to refurbish an empty retail unit in Poole’s Dolphin Centre to enhance operations.

Gill Payne, Manager at Poole Foodbank said: ‘We are so grateful for the financial support that we have received from CIL.

“This has enabled us to transform an empty unit in central Poole into a working environment for our fantastic volunteers.

“This food store receives, sorts and stores donated food and serves as the pivotal point for distributing packages to our seven satellite venues that serve the people across the Poole area who struggle with food poverty.”

Cllr Millie Earl, Deputy Leader, and Portfolio Holder for Connected Communities, BCP Council, pictured, said: “I am delighted that so many different worthwhile and community led causes and projects have been given a boost from the CIL grants, big or small.

“It’s fantastic that money raised from development can be put to such good use, from refurbishing disabled toilets at Merley Community Centre to installing environmental signage at Seaview to providing hanging flower baskets in Winton or making it possible to open a community café in the newly refurbished Alexandra Park pavilion.”

“We can’t wait to see the results of all the hard work put in by our residents across Bournemouth and Poole.”

The dates and details of how to apply for Round 6 of the CIL grants will be announced in due course.

Ryanair launches 20th destination from Bournemouth Airport

by Andy Diprose January 15, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Ryanair has confirmed its 20th destination from Bournemouth Airport with twice-weekly flights to Nantes in Brittany from June this year.

Europe’s biggest airline will fly on Wednesdays and Saturdays to France’s sixth largest city from 1st June. Tickets are available now at ryanair.com

Following the recent announcement of brand new flights to Morocco from April, it means Ryanair now offers 20 destinations and its biggest ever schedule from Bournemouth Airport.

Ryanair increased the number of flights last year by 30 per cent with the addition of a second aircraft based at the airport.

And with tour operator TUI adding 60,000 extra seats from Bournemouth in 2024, airport bosses have already said they are confident of exceeding one million passengers this year for the first time since 2008.

To cater for the expected passenger growth, airport owners Regional and City Airports is currently investing more than £5m in new facilities, equipment, staff and training, ready for the new season.

Steve Gill, Bournemouth Airport’s Managing Director, said: “We’ve enjoyed a 16-year relationship with Ryanair and are delighted that the airline has chosen to introduce Nantes as its 20th destination this year.

“That comes hot on the heels of announcing Agadir in Morocco at the start of the year, and year-round flights to Lanzarote, which are new for 2024.

“It means we can offer passengers more choice than ever before, with 37 destinations available from Bournemouth.

“We are continuing to invest in upgrading our facilities and are also recruiting for a range of summer jobs including ground handling teams, passenger service staff and security officers.”

Bournemouth Airport now has 37 destinations on offer. In 2023 it was ranked one of the top three airports in the UK for customer service.

‘Outstanding’ grading from Ofsted for Bournemouth & Poole College residential provision

by Andy Diprose January 15, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Bournemouth & Poole College’s residential provision has been rated as ‘outstanding’.

It follows an inspection of its residential provision by education watchdog Ofsted.

The three-day inspection, carried out in November 2023, found the College’s homestay accommodation provision to be outstanding in all areas.

Overall experiences and progress of young people, how well young people are helped and protected as well as the effectiveness of leaders and managers all received the highest possible grade across the board from the inspectorate.

Phil Sayles, Principal at Bournemouth & Poole College, said: “It is wonderful that Ofsted has recognised the hard work of the teams supporting students requiring accommodation.

“This is an excellent report from Ofsted which is testament to the exceptional work delivered by our residential team of student support and wellbeing teams, and academic staff, it really is a team effort.

“We are committed to provide students with a comfortable and outstanding ‘away from home’ experience which aims to increase their knowledge, confidence and independence and it’s fantastic to be acknowledged by Ofsted.”

The College currently supports residential students, aged 16 to 20, who are enrolled on its renowned Specialised Chef Apprenticeship Programme.

Approximately 75 per cent of students on this apprenticeship do not live locally to Bournemouth, Poole or Christchurch and require accommodation not only during their studies at the College but also during their employment during their apprenticeship.

The prestigious Specialised Chef Apprentices are employed in some of the best hotels and restaurants across London and surrounding counties including The Ritz, Claridge’s and in the Royal Household.

The work placement gives students the opportunity to work away from home and reside in homestay accommodation or live-in facilities with their placement employer.

Debbie Smith, Assistant Principal People and Student Experience, added: “We are delighted that the incredible support and care our students and apprentices receive in our residential provision has been recognised as being outstanding.

“Our Specialised Chef scholarship programme is both prestigious and award-winning and our students and apprentices on the programme progress to many amazing jobs within the hospitality industry.

“We always have our students at the heart of all they do, and this result demonstrates the comprehensive and excellent support package that enables them to focus on their studies and develop their technical skills to the highest level while also growing in confidence, developing independent living skills, and training for the world of work.”

The Ofsted report states: “The residential accommodation at Bournemouth & Poole College helps young people to achieve excellent outcomes.

“Through diligent preparation and consistent support, the College helps young people to achieve their ambitions while on the specialised chef course.

“As a result of running this course for many years, the College has built and sustained an extensive network of restaurants.

“Because of the stability offered by accommodation, and support from the College, young people finish the course able to meet their future career goals.

“Most young people go on to gain full-time employment within the industry, often at prestigious restaurants.”

Let’s Brew this! – Bournemouth Samaritans dismantle ‘Blue Monday’ once and for all

by Andy Diprose January 15, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Samaritans are reminding everyone to reach out for a cuppa and a catch-up with the people you care about.

The charity has dubbed today, Monday January 15, Brew Monday.

The Bournemouth & District branch is joining forces with South Western Railway to host an event at Bournemouth Rail Station from eight this morning to four o’clock this afternoon.

Volunteers and rail staff will be handing out tea bags and chatting to passengers about the power of connecting.

The third Monday of the year has been labelled by some as Blue Monday – and the saddest day of the year – due to the winter weather, post-Christmas slump and cost of living pressures,

But the suicide prevention charity has long campaigned to dispel the myth and says it plans to turn the day into something positive by running Brew Monday.

Charlie, Samaritans of Bournemouth and District Branch Director, said: “At Samaritans, we’re consistently busy responding to a call for help every ten seconds, every hour of every day of the year.

“We know that people find life difficult at all times of the year, not just one day in January. And when they do, it’s important that they reach out for support.

“Blue Monday sounds very negative, instead we’re celebrating Brew Monday and encouraging friends and family to check in with one another over a cuppa.

“Even small moments of human connection like this can play a big role in helping people who are currently struggling.”

University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity welcomes Morebus as official supporter

by Roy Martin January 12, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Morebus has named University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity as its official good cause for 2024 and 2025.

The local bus operator will spend the next two years raising funds and awareness to help the charity enhance the treatment and care of patients accessing NHS services at Royal Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch hospitals.

Morebus general manager, Richard Wade, said: “University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity is a crucial local resource, helping to pay for additional equipment, research and innovations – as well as finishing touches and ‘extras’ that complement the existing high-quality care for patients across the three towns.

“It provides financial support to areas of the hospitals’ services that lie beyond the scope of NHS funding – and this is of enormous benefit to thousands of people living across our area.

“Our corporate charity is voted for by the Morebus team. Many of my colleagues have benefited directly from the support University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity provides, so we are delighted to be backing this very worthy cause and raising as much money as possible over the coming years.”

Morebus says it has a busy calendar of fundraising planned and is also promoting the charity on-board and on the rear of a bus.

“Hopefully, the messages will be seen by thousands traveling throughout the area – and this will help increase awareness for this very worthy cause,” added Richard.

Hayley Harris, corporate fundraiser for University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity, added: “Our new partnership with Morebus is so exciting because there are so many opportunities to make a real difference together for everybody across Dorset and the surrounding areas.

“Our hospitals and local bus service strive to achieve the same goal – to provide the best possible service for our community.

“On behalf of the charity, we are looking forward to funding further items that are above and beyond NHS funds and doing even more for our patients with the support of Morebus.”

Petition to save paddling pools in Redhill and Christchurch close to hitting target

by Roy Martin January 12, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Over 2000 people have signed an online petition to save the Redhill Paddling Pool and Quomps Splash Park.

BCP Council is currently proposing to close the sites or transfer ownership to external partners, along with the facility at Hamworthy Park in Poole.

However, the Echo is reporting Christchurch Town Council may step in to save Quomps, which has allocated £55,000 in funds for the park in its draft budget for 2024/25.

Christchurch Town Council’s acting town clerk James Atkinson told the newspaper: “Christchurch Town Council understands the importance of the Quomps Splash Park to the local community.

“After learning of its potential closure, we have been working hard to enable its future management.

“We are investigating how the splash park can be operated in a sustainable manner, so that this much-loved community asset can be enjoyed by future generations.”

At the time of writing, a petition on change.org has just short of its 2500 target.

Organiser of the petition, Laura Ballantyne, says: “We believe that it is crucial to invest in facilities that contribute significantly to the wellbeing of our community’s families and young people.

“Let’s stand together against this proposal by signing this petition. Show BCP council how much we value our paddling pools and splashparks in Redhill and Christchurch Quomps.”

Success of drink and drug drive campaign welcomed by Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner

by Andy Diprose January 11, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

The success of a Christmas drink and drug drive campaign has been welcomed by Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick.

Between Friday 1 December 2023 and Monday 1 January 2024, party-goers were encouraged to plan their journeys home.

During the campaign, Dorset Police arrested 113 people in connection with 127 suspected drink and drug driving offences.

Some drivers were arrested on suspicion of both drink and drug-related offences.

Of the 113 arrests, 71 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving, 53 people on suspicion of drug driving and three further arrests were made for failing to provide a sample for analysis.

The number of arrests was up compared to the same campaign period last year when 85 arrests were made.

A number of venues supported the force’s ‘Lift Legend’ campaign, rewarding designated drivers with free drinks as a ‘thank you’ for getting their friends and family members home safe.

Mr Sidwick, pictured, said he was pleased to see the increased operational activity during December.

He added: “Drink and drug driving kills, and while the vast majority of road users are responsible, it is important that those who choose to take the risk and get behind the wheel while under the influence are dealt with robustly.

“I want to be clear, there is no excuse for driving after drinking alcohol or taking drugs and, as demonstrated in my Police and Crime Plan, I am in full support of officers who are relentless in their work to target those who make this dangerous choice, putting themselves and others at risk.”

Arrests increase in latest Christmas drink and drug drive campaign in Dorset

by Roy Martin January 11, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Dorset Police is hailing its Christmas drink and drug drive campaign a success after more than 100 arrests were made in December.

The campaign encouraged people to plan appropriate ways to get home from Christmas parties rather than getting behind the wheel whilst under the influence.

Dorset Police arrested 113 people in connection with 127 suspected offences during the month, compared with 85 arrests during the same period in 2022.

Of the 113 arrests, 71 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving; 53 people on suspicion of drug driving and 3 further arrests were made for failing to provide a sample for analysis.

Inspector Craig Tatton, of the Roads Policing Team, said: “During December, we increased operational activity in an attempt to catch drink and drug drivers who put other roads users at risk.

“While it is disappointing to see an increase in the number of suspected drink and drug drive related offences, I am pleased that our increased efforts to tackle those drivers has resulted in so many arrests and potential convictions.

“Drink and drug driving is one of the main causes of deaths and serious injuries on roads in Dorset and the pain this causes to victims’ families is devastating, but entirely preventable.

“As in previous years, I would like to thank members of the public who called us to report a drink or drug driver. This intelligence is really important and helps us to keep our roads safe.

“I would also like to thank the venues that supported our ‘Lift Legend’ campaign, by rewarding designated drivers with free drinks as a ‘thank you’ for getting their friends and family members home safely; as well as everyone who volunteered to be the designated driver or who took our advice and planned their journey home.”

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, David Sidwick said: “I am pleased to see the increased operational activity as part of the Christmas drink and drug drive operation has yielded a positive result with 113 people arrested during the campaign. Drink and drug driving kills, and while the vast majority of road users are responsible, it is important that those who choose to take the risk and get behind the wheel while under the influence are dealt with robustly.

“I want to be clear, there is no excuse for driving after drinking alcohol or taking drugs and, as demonstrated in my Police and Crime Plan, I am in full support of officers who are relentless in their work to target those who make this dangerous choice, putting themselves and others at risk.”

If you have information relating to someone who regularly drives under the influence of drugs or alcohol, please call 101 or fill in an intelligence form on dorset.police.uk.

National award for 21-year-old Rylee Dickinson from Poole

by Roy Martin January 11, 2024
written by Roy Martin

A 21-year-old from Poole has met Her Royal Highness Princess Anne while receiving an award for public speaking.

Being honoured at the National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum, Rylee Dickinson, who now lives in Christchurch, talked about how she grew up in care from the age of 13.

Rylee said it was an incredible experience and something she will take with her for the rest of her life. She said: “As soon as I went into care I was told that I would be moving to Derbyshire, and from there I was up and down the country every three months moving in and out of different accommodation. I joke about it now, but it was really tough.”

One of the only relationships to survive Rylee’s transition from childhood to adulthood is with her Personal Advisor at BCP Council, who continues to play a positive, influential role in her life and the successes she has gone on to achieve.

Rylee has lived in several “awful” hostels and supported-living accommodations since leaving care, but has recently benefitted from a more positive experience in council housing back on the south coast.

“My council flat is great, some of my previous accommodations have been so dark and depressing they took a toll on my mental health, but this one is far lighter and airier, giving me the space I need to grow as a person and address bad habits.”

She also continues to spend a significant amount of time at the 333 in Bournemouth, a facility she helped build in 2021 which provides a safe space for care-experienced young people to relax, socialise and learn.

“I was involved with the 333 project from the very start and took on a lead role which meant I was included in several project meetings during construction phases. Later on, the National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum asked us to film a short video detailing our project. I was the only person to show interest and so wrote, recorded and narrated my own video.”

Shortly after her submission, Rylee’s film saw the 333 shortlisted for the organisations’ ‘project of the year’ award, with the then 20-year-old invited to attend the ceremony and give a 10-minute presentation detailing the standout features and successes of the project.

More than 150 Care Managers from several counties were in attendance, with Rylee drawing on the skills and experience she had previously developed through speaking at other public events organised by foundations such as The Prince’s Trust – founded by King Charles III.

“It’s not something I struggle with, I understand why it can unnerve some people but I don’t feel that way. I feel like I’ve already overcome so many obstacles in my life that public speaking isn’t a daunting task in comparison.”

Rylee’s ability to rise to the challenge of public speaking, despite some of the obstacles she has faced in her life, has now seen her claim the National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum’s annual ‘Public Speaker of the Year’ prize. The now 21-year-old won the award to applause from many significant individuals in the care sphere, including Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, a patron of Catch 22; the organisation which formed the National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum.

“I like to say it’s just my average Tuesday,” joked Rylee, who later engaged in a discussion with the Royal about her achievements. “It was an incredible experience and something I will take with me for the rest of my life.

“It has spurred me on to continue pushing forward and breaking down barriers, and my message to anyone else in care would be to do the same.”

Discussing Rylee’s achievements, Councillor Richard Burton, Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People at BCP Council, said:

“I was impressed by Rylee ever since I first met her at the BCP Corporate Parenting Board. She is so willing to help voice the thoughts of care-experienced young people, using her time and skills to champion their cause. She is a great role model to children in care.

“I would like to personally congratulate Rylee on all of her outstanding accomplishments to date, and I’m excited to see what else she will go on to achieve alongside our other talented care-experienced young people.”

Bournemouth East MP launches petition to save Kings Park Nursery

by Andy Diprose January 10, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

A petition has been launched to save Bournemouth’s Kings Park Nursery.

BCP Council announced yesterday that the nursery is to close permanently due to budget cuts.

It’s been growing plants for Bournemouth’s parks and gardens since 1924 and also sells plants to the public.

The council says the closure was a difficult decision but it will save £85,000 in the next financial year.

Bournemouth East MP Tobias Ellwood, pictured, has now started the Save Kings Park Nursery petition.

He says that in a bid to reduce costs, BCP Council is wrongly turning its attention to leisure, cultural and community assets which bring joy to residents and support communities.

Bournemouth’s Kings Park Plant Nursery to close permanently

by Roy Martin January 10, 2024
written by Roy Martin

The Kings Park Plant Nursery in Bournemouth is to close permanently, BCP Council has announced.

There’ll be a short four-day sale in the coming months but the nursery will not reopen in the Spring as previously planned.

A message on social media from the team at Kings Park says they have made the difficult decision with a heavy heart, and thank all of their loyal customers for their support through the years.

Cllr Millie Earl, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Connected Communities says: “Councils across the country are facing an unprecedented challenge. Soaring inflation has driven up costs and many councils are facing an increase in demand for core services, such as social care, education and highways.

“BCP Council share these challenges as it works to close a £50 million funding gap. We have been clear that difficult decisions will need to be made and we are taking a responsible approach rather than deferring tough choices to future years.

“One of these difficult decisions is to close Kings Park Plant Nursery, it will not reopen in Spring 2024. This will save £85,000 in the 2024/25 financial year.

“We are aware that it will impact our dedicated staff and volunteers, and we will be supporting them throughout this process. Our aim now is to look at how we can best use this space to benefit the community going forward.

“I realise this will also come as a disappointment to loyal customers and I want to thank anyone who has ever visited and purchased items from Kings Park Plant Nursery.

“Kings Park Plant Nursery will open for a short period of time in the coming months, and we hope customers will come and purchase the remaining stock from the plant nursery. This will also enable any customers with gift vouchers to spend them during this time. We will make everyone aware of these dates once they have been decided.

“We have always said we would be open and transparent and the decision to close Kings Park Plant Nursery has been a difficult one and one that hasn’t been made lightly.”

The short 4-day sale will take place from Wednesday 14 – Saturday 17 February 2024, 10am-4pm.

Just the answer to those unwanted Christmas gifts as charity launches month-long amnesty

by Andy Diprose January 10, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Dorset’s Diverse Abilities has come up with an answer to unwanted Christmas gifts.

The disability charity is repurposing them as raffle and auction lots for its fundraising events this year.

The Great Christmas Present Amnesty takes place throughout January.

Unwanted and new items can be donated including beauty products, shower gel sets, cookbooks, alcohol, food hampers and more.

The only exclusions are electrical products.

Francesca Potton, Community Fundraiser, said: “We’ve all received that one present from a distant relative that doesn’t know you all that well, or even received duplicates of the same thing because some people know you really well!

“These presents don’t need to linger in the back of the cupboard anymore as we will make good use of them throughout the year.”

Gifts can be dropped off at the Diverse Abilities Head Office, above Langside School, on weekdays between 10am and 3pm.

The school’s address is Langside School, Langside Avenue, Poole, BH12 5BN. On arrival use the doors for the main office – to the right of the main school doors.

In addition, presents can also be dropped off at G&T Cards in Broadstone, Ashley Road, Boscombe (Sovereign Centre) and Poole High Street or the Coach & Horses in Wimborne.

Alternatively, individuals, community groups, and businesses can host their own collections to be dropped off at the head office together.

Francesca added: “If you want to host your own collection, then we want to hear from you.

“We’ve got a helpful fundraising pack to support you along the way and explain how these contributions make a huge difference in our fundraising events.”

Bournemouth Water offers tips on how to avoid frozen pipes during the cold snap

by Roy Martin January 9, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Bournemouth Water is reminding everyone to protect their homes and properties against the risk of leaks during the cold weather this winter.

Temperatures across Bournemouth plummeted over the weekend and the Met Office forecasts that it will get significantly colder.

A sudden drop in temperature can result in water-related issues, such as frozen pipes and leaks.

Richard Stanbrook, Drinking Water Services Director at Bournemouth Water said: “Our teams work incredibly hard every day, come rain or shine, to keep the taps flowing for our customers. Freezing conditions can make this much more challenging.

“The freezing temperatures last winter caused a large number of bursts, both on our network and customer properties, which put a lot of pressure on our network and resources.

“While we can’t change the weather forecast, we can ask our customers for their help and to take simple steps to prepare their homes for the cold weather.”

Great tips to help you get winter-ready

  • Wrap up your pipes and water tanks with lagging – especially those in unheated areas such as lofts, garages or gardens
  • Fix dripping taps – even a small trickle can result in a frozen pipe
  • Find your inside stop tap (usually under the kitchen sink or where the pipework enters your property) and make sure you can turn it off
  • Leave the heating on low if you go away
  • Check your central heating boiler has been serviced
  • Keep the contact details of a reputable plumber on hand.

What to do if you have frozen pipes

  • If you don’t have any water, check with neighbours. If they still have water, your pipes may be frozen
  • Check pipes for signs of a split – a leak or burst will not occur until the water has thawed
  • Turn off the supply using the internal stop tap
  • If the central heating and other water heating appliances are already on, keep on. However, if they are currently turned off do not be tempted to switch them on to thaw frozen pipes as this could cause damage
  • Drain the cold water system only by flushing the toilet and opening cold taps over sinks and baths
  • If you don’t find any damage, turn on all the taps and thaw the frozen pipe using a warm towel or hot water bottle wrapped in a towel
  • When the pipes have thawed and you’re sure no damage or leak has occurred, turn off the taps and slowly switch the supply back using the internal stop tap
  • Recheck the pipes now that they are under pressure and check again for signs of damage or a leak before switching on water heating appliances.

Call a plumber immediately

If you discover a leak or burst pipe, call a reputable plumber immediately. Bournemouth Water supports approved contractor schemes and a list of approved contractors can be found on the WaterSafe website or by calling 0333 207 9030.

It’s important to know that any big freeze is followed by a thaw which can cause interruptions to your water supply. Would you be able to access an alternative water supply during a disruption? If not, get in touch and sign up for Bournemouth Water’s Priority Services Register here.

For more information and advice on preparing for the cold weather, see this site.

New jobs set to be created following extra funding for bus routes

by Andy Diprose January 9, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Eleven new jobs are set to be created following extra funding for bus routes.

Planned enhancements include an increase in frequency for the popular Morebus 13 route between Bournemouth and Wimborne via Ferndown.

The bus operator has seen demand for its services rise over recent months.

It has been working with BCP Council to secure funding from the government’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

Andrew Wickham, Morebus Managing Director, said: “This investment by the government is part of a strategy to make further enhancements to services across England.

“It fits in perfectly with our own mission to make bus travel the transport of choice for those living across our region.

“We’re delighted to have received funding, so that we can make a number of improvements to our offering here.

“One of which is to increase the frequency of our 13 route, which connects Bournemouth with Wimborne, to every 20 minutes from February 2024.

“In order to fulfil these extra journeys, we have 11 new job opportunities for drivers.

“We are inviting people to boost the start of their 2024 with an application to join our team.

“As well as inviting those who have experience as bus drivers, we are looking to welcome people without qualifications.

“We provide full, paid, training with no previous experience required.

“This is an excellent opportunity for anyone seeking a new challenge – particularly those who held temporary Christmas roles in retail and hospitality.

“These applicants are particularly welcome because many hold invaluable skills in customer service.

“New joiners will receive training, uniform and free travel for themselves and a nominee.

“I’m very much looking forward to welcoming some new faces to the Morebus family in the near future.”

SOBO Beach owner appeals for public support in bid to stay on site until 2027

by Andy Diprose January 8, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

A popular restaurant and bar on Southbourne Beach Promenade is appealing for people to write in and support its plans to stay on site until 2027.

SOBO Beach is applying for planning permission to continue at its location while BCP Council decide on a permanent solution.

However, owner Rich Slater says that what he describes as a pernicious campaign to try and rally people against the application has come to his attention.

He stresses that the restaurant and bar will not be expanding over the next three years and everything will remain exactly as it has been for the last two summers.

Residents and customers are being urged to log in to the BCP planning portal and leave a comment of support.

Anyone with issues or concerns is asked to contact SOBO Beach so that they can try and resolve any matters.

In a social media post, Rich says: “I’m here to say that I know we’re not perfect, and that admission is important.

“By admitting we are not perfect we can keep working on improving, doing little things and big things to make ourselves better every day.

“Just to clarify we’re applying for temporary planning permission in order to stay on site until 2027, which will hopefully give BCP Council long enough to decide what to do with the site permanently.

“We’re not expanding our existing offer in this application, and everything is exactly as it is now and has been for the past two summers.

“We are continuing to work on noise solutions ahead of this summer to ensure the area remains peaceful and idyllic, whilst we still hope to maintain our core events that have given a good time to so many.

“So please, we love being here at SOBO Beach, and it would be a shame to see the site sit desolate if planning is rejected (there is no plan B on the table).

“It’s always easy to garner objections, but getting people to actually sit down and submit a letter of support is never so simple.

“I urge you if you can spare a few minutes to support us we will continue to work to be better every day, and continue to serve the local community in every way possible.”

Small chance of sleet forecast for Bournemouth town centre

by Roy Martin January 8, 2024
written by Roy Martin

Bournemouth might have a small covering of sleet this afternoon according to the Met Office.

And whilst other areas of the country could be in for heavy snowfall, no heavy snow weather warnings are in place for this area.

Looking at the forecast at midday on Monday, there’s a less than 50 per cent chance of sleet between 2pm and 6pm.

Meanwhile, as the temperate drops, the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) has been activated by BCP Council.

The Council’s & St Mungos’ Outreach Teams will be doing extra shifts throughout SWEP, finding anyone who is sleeping rough and encouraging them to take up the offer of emergency accommodation.

Wrap up warm and stay safe should things change.

BCP Council prepares to activate Severe Weather Emergency Protocol

by Roy Martin January 6, 2024
written by Roy Martin

BCP Council’s Severe Weather Emergency Protocol could be activated this weekend as temperatures drop to below zero in the region.

Council Leader Vikki Slade is asking residents to remain cautious as the first cold snap of the year looks set to descend.

The risk of ice on top of all the surface water from the last few days is of particular concern, and teams are on stand by with a fleet of 14 gritting vehicles.

Cllr Slade added: “Although the torrential rainfall on Thursday night has led to beautifully sunny and clear afternoons since, we should all be mindful of the expected change in temperatures over the next few days.

“This cold snap will likely mean icy pavements, frozen pathways and increased risk on our roads, so I ask our residents to take care when enjoying their weekend.

“If you can, please check on elderly and vulnerable neighbours to ensure they’re keeping warm and safe.

“Our partners at St Mungo’s are closely monitoring the weather forecast and checking on our street homeless population.

“Should zero degrees be forecast over three consecutive nights, or the impact of the rain, and wind chill cause concern, the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) will be activated and anyone who is sleeping rough will be encouraged to take up the offer of emergency accommodation.”

Residents are asked to report instances of internal flooding directly to the council via the BCP website.

Dorset Police revealed as the slowest in the UK at answering calls

by Roy Martin January 6, 2024
written by Roy Martin

A new national study has revealed Dorset Police are the slowest in the country at answering emergency calls.

Research conducted by people search engine, Radaris, analyses the most recent data from the month of October to determine how long UK police forces take to answer emergency phone calls.

Gwent Police is the quickest, answering 90.6% of calls in under 10 seoncds, compared with Dorset which answered 70.20 per cent in less than 10 seconds.

Dorset Police responded saying they had reduced staffing levels at the time of the survey due to training and staff sickness, but their own internal data shows them as generally being much quicker.

The force told Alfred in Shaftesbury: “During the months of October and November, Dorset Police had reduced staffing levels due to training and staff sickness, which resulted in the force taking a few seconds longer, on average to answer calls.

“Unfortunately, we were unable to meet the target of answering calls within 10 seconds. During October, the national data indicates that Dorset Police answered 999 calls, on average within 16.15 seconds and 10.8 seconds in November.

“However, as with other police forces nationally, internal data, which records the time that the emergency call is made available to Dorset Police indicates that the average call answer time was 11.6 seconds and 9.22 seconds for each month respectively.

“Despite these challenging months, I am pleased to see the national data indicates that the force has reduced the amount of time it takes to answer emergency calls. BT data indicates that Dorset Police answered 999 calls, on average, in 12.62 seconds between the period of 1 January 2023 to 30 November 2023.

“During this same date range other forces answered calls on average between 7.29 and 35.21 seconds. This is an improvement from the previous year where BT data indicates that Dorset Police answered emergency calls, on average after 17.87 seconds.

“We continue to appeal to the public to prevent accidental calls to 999. Last year we processed 27,500 accidental calls which takes up valuable time for our contact officers and prevents them from supporting genuine emergencies.

“Dorset Police is committed to providing an excellent service to victims of crime and has ambitious plans to make significant investments in our public contact systems, with a commitment to reduce call times.

“I would like to reassure members of the public that genuine emergency calls will receive a prompt response from the police.”

Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick added: “I continue to hold the Chief Constable to account for Dorset Police’s response to both emergency and non-emergency calls, and I am pleased to see the constant effort to improve. For example, over the highest period of demand last summer, the time taken to respond to calls was improved compared to the same period in the previous year. I am also sure that Dorset residents will understand that the time taken to answer calls is not the only important measure and will be interested that in recent months Dorset Police has improved its deployment processes which have brought about a 10% improvement in emergency attendance times.”

A spokesperson for Radaris has commented on the study findings: “Police revealed that crime had increased by 11% in the year ending December 2022 compared with the year ending December 2021.

“This year-on-year increase highlights a strong correlation between the rise in crime rates and its association with Christmas.”

They executed a warrant at an address in Bournemouth and conducted a further 10 overt checks at other addresses in the area. One person was arrested on suspicion of immigration offences, with further individuals sought by officers.

Detective Inspector Darren Moores, of Bournemouth CID, said: “We have continued to build intelligence and conduct further enquiries in relation to this alleged operation involving the supply of drugs in the area.

“By taking proactive measures such as this day of action, we can disrupt the activities of those reported to be involved and gain further information to assist our investigation moving forward.

“We fully recognise the reports of drug supply and associated activity has on our local communities and we will continue to take positive steps to disrupt the suspected supply chain and make Dorset a hostile place for suspected drug dealers to operate.”

Cherries are ‘quite thin’ ahead of Queen’s Park Rangers match

by Roy Martin January 5, 2024
written by Roy Martin

AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola has revealed that the Cherries are ‘quite thin’ ahead of the Emirates FA Cup fixture with QPR.

The Cherries boss will be missing Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo as the Africa Cup of Nations begins its build-up, with Iraola hopeful that Ouattara can recover from injury to make the squad for Burkina Faso.

The winger, who has been turning out at left-back in recent games, had to be substituted following an ankle injury in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and Iraola admits it is unclear whether he’ll be able to partake in the competition.

He told the media: “We’re quite thin right now because we lose from the other day Dango and Antoine, although Dango is actually injured. I hope he can recover and help his national team but it’s not clear.

“We have a couple of players also who finished with small issues from the other day against Spurs, so we’ll have to see if they can help us tomorrow. I cannot tell you who!

“I don’t think we are recovering anyone else from the other day so we are quite thin but I hope we are enough to go tomorrow and win the game.”

When pressed on the latest on defender Lloyd Kelly, Iraola revealed that the 25-year-old is doing individual work on the grass.

He explained: “For me, he’s been one of our best players, he’s been really good and is a key part of the team.

“It’s unlucky for us that he’s been injured a lot recently. He’s still not with the group, he’s doing well but he’s running on his own and he has things to do before he can join the group.

“I think we will follow more or less what we did in the Carabao Cup. We’ll make some changes but we want to win the game, that’s our number one priority.

“Some players will have more opportunities than in the league games but we still want to go there and win the right to play in the next round.”

Cool Coast Ice Rink is located at and operated by Bournemouth International Centre, operated by registered charity BH Live in partnership with BCP Council.

by Andy Diprose January 5, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Castlepoint celebrated the end of its 20th anniversary year with a 46 per cent rise in December visitor numbers.

The footfall figures build on growth of 22 per cent in visitor numbers in November compared to the previous year.

The shopping centre’s first Christmas village, Festive Point, proved particularly successful.

The new feature is estimated to have attracted more than 16,000 people over the 18 days it was open.

Castlepoint provided more than £15,000 of support – both financial and in-kind – to community and charity causes during 2023 as part of its Project Positivity initiative.

They ranged from giving away weekly food shops and providing free IT support to building racking for food banks and litter picking and beach cleans.

Its aim was to deliver 20 acts of kindness in acknowledgement of Castlepoint’s 20 years.

The centre also underwent a full rebrand and welcomed a trio of new brands – Holland & Barrett, Hotel Chocolat and Nike.

Castlepoint Centre Manager, David Pickett, said: “Well what a year to look back on and it certainly has been a merry Christmas here at Castlepoint.

“Our team has worked tirelessly to provide a special festive experience for our shoppers and we are so glad to have been rewarded with extraordinary uplifts in visitor numbers as families come in their thousands.

“We are proud to be part of this wonderful community and look forward to making more improvements and enhancements in 2024, and hopefully launch some new stores too.

“With the sales period now in full swing, there are some amazing discounts available at our 40+ brands.”

by Andy Diprose January 4, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

Another big clean-up operation is underway today, Friday, after heavy rain caused floods and chaos in Dorset – for the second time this week.

Roads were closed, cars stranded and public transport severely disrupted as just under 28 millimetres of rain fell in 12 hours.

Flooding around the Royal Bournemouth Hospital site, including the Cooper Dean roundabout, affected traffic leaving the hospital at Castle Lane East causing severe congestion.

The Isle of Purbeck was a virtual island after the A351 in Corfe Castle became impassable.

Traffic on the A35 at the Bakers Arms roundabout, and adjoining roads, was also affected by floods.

A flood warning has been issued for the Lower Avon from Ringwood to Christchurch and the Lower Stour from Sturminster Marshall to Christchurch.

Met Office issues yellow weather warning with heavy rain forecast for Dorset

by Andy Diprose January 3, 2024
written by Andy Diprose

The Met Office has issued a yellow severe weather warning for heavy rain today, Thursday, across Southern England including Dorset.

It’s in force from midday to three o’clock tomorrow morning.

Forecasters say there is a chance of between 20 and 30 millimetres of rain falling – and perhaps as much as 50 millimetres.

They warn that there could be flooding, made worse by the current wet ground conditions, and travel disruption.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “The track of the heaviest rain remains uncertain but there is chance of 20 to 30 mm of rain falling in a 6 to 9 hour period for a portion of the warning area, with a few places seeing as much as 40-50 mm.

“Much of this rain is falling on already wet ground and therefore, impacts are more likely.”
