Traffic enforcement cameras planned in Dorset

More traffic enforcement cameras could be introduced across Dorset to tackle dangerous driving and improve road safety.

Dorset councillors have been discussing plans to install council-operated cameras that could detect offences such as yellow box violations, illegal turns and misuse of bus or taxi lanes.

Speeding offences would still remain the responsibility of the police.

A pilot scheme is expected to begin later this year on St Martins Road in Upton following a public consultation in 2025.

The consultation found 67 per cent of respondents supported the idea, while 27 per cent were against it.

Council officers say the aim of the cameras is to improve road safety, reduce congestion and cut emissions, rather than generate income from fines.

The technology could also be used to support “school streets”, where parking and traffic restrictions around school gates are difficult to enforce.

Each new camera location will require a public consultation and clear signage before being installed.

The proposals are expected to be considered by the council’s cabinet, with the pilot scheme potentially starting in the autumn.
