Flood protection plan strengthened locally
Flood and coastal protection work is set to expand across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
Dorset Council will join an existing shared Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management team, bringing together expertise to reduce the impact of flooding and coastal change while improving access to funding and long term protection for residents.
The partnership builds on a service launched in 2024 with East Devon District Council, creating a shared South West team hosted by BCP Council to deliver projects and support coastal monitoring across multiple areas.
Councillor Patrick Canavan asked for reassurance during the meeting that the move would not detract from work already being carried out locally, as cabinet members considered the proposal without further debate before approving it unanimously.
Councillor Andy Hadley said the expanded service would strengthen efforts to protect people, property and the coastline, adding it would improve the ability to monitor changes and “reduce reliance on external consultancy support”.
Dorset Council’s Councillor Jon Andrews said recent weather had shown the need to act, adding the move would “strengthen collaboration” and improve access to funding, helping deliver a more consistent service across the wider area.
