BCP prepares for renters rights changes
BCP Council is preparing for changes to rental laws expected later this year.
The Renters’ Rights Act is due to come into force from 1 May 2026 and will introduce reforms including the removal of no fault evictions, the end of fixed term tenancies and limits on rent increases to once each year.
Under the new rules landlords will need to provide a valid reason to evict tenants, such as selling a property, unpaid rent or anti social behaviour.
BCP Council says it is closely monitoring the changes and is preparing for a possible increase in residents seeking advice or support once the legislation begins.
The authority says it is too early to predict the scale of the impact locally but expects some tenants and landlords may need guidance on tenancy arrangements and property standards.
To prepare, the council is increasing capacity in housing advice and prevention teams, improving online guidance and working with community partners to ensure support is available.
Officials say the priority is preventing homelessness and helping both tenants and landlords maintain stable long term homes.
