Christchurch leisure centre expansion plans

Plans to borrow £1.8m to expand a Christchurch leisure centre will be reviewed again by councillors.

BCP Council’s audit and governance committee is set to reconsider proposals to fund an extension at Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre following requests for additional information about the project.

Two Riversmeet is the only council run leisure centre in Christchurch and one of 5 facilities operated directly by BCP Council, offering swimming pools, a fitness suite, squash courts, 3G football pitches and an indoor cycling studio.

However the site currently has no purpose built exercise studio, meaning many classes take place in squash courts or the sports hall.

An independent review in 2022 identified the need for a dedicated studio space and highlighted improving the health and fitness offer as a top priority for the centre.

The proposed extension would create 2 studios capable of hosting between 30 and 40 people each, allowing more exercise classes and community activities to take place.

Cabinet approved the borrowing and expansion plans on 14 January before referring them to the audit and governance committee, which will reconsider the proposal at a meeting on 19 March.
