Councillor welcomes £3million investment for East Cliff
East Cliff in Bournemouth is set to benefit from a three million pound government investment to stabilise the area and improve safety.
BCP Council confirmed the work will begin in September 2026, with the first phase currently out to tender. Most of the town’s coastline is protected against sea erosion, but landslides caused by unstable groundwater continue to pose a risk.
An extra one point four million pounds approved by the council in December 2025 will support ongoing inspection, maintenance, and replacement of more than seven hundred sand drains and other cliff drainage systems. Councillor Sara Armstrong said she welcomes the investment, highlighting the importance of restoring safe access to the beach and the East Cliff lift, which has been out of service for over ten years. She added that proper cliff drainage and maintenance are essential to protect nearby roads and buildings and secure long-term access to this section of the seafront.
The project forms part of wider efforts by BCP Council to maintain and safeguard more than fourteen miles of publicly owned coastline across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole.
