Bournemouth MPs urge UK restraint over Iran conflict
MPs across Bournemouth and Poole have called for restraint after the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran, prompting retaliation across the region including an attack on an RAF base in Cyprus.
The prime minister has confirmed that US forces would be allowed to use British military bases for defensive strikes.
Bournemouth East MP Tom Hayes said he did not want Britain to be drawn into the conflict and that any involvement must be limited strictly to defensive action while encouraging a negotiated peace. He also raised concerns about the potential economic impact, warning that progress on inflation, interest rates and borrowing could be affected.
Mid Dorset and North Poole MP Vikki Slade said developments were deeply worrying and that it was critical the situation did not spread into a broader conflict. She urged the prime minister not to allow the UK to be drawn into another prolonged conflict in the Middle East.
Bournemouth West MP Jessica Toale said many people in BCP would be concerned and confirmed the government is working to support three hundred thousand British nationals in the region, urging residents to follow official travel advice and seek consular support if needed.
