Calls for more electric vehicle charging points

BCP Green Party is urging Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the three towns.

In a statement, the local group said public charging points already generate revenue for local businesses and the council, but more investment is needed through existing national grants and fair private partnerships.

A spokesperson said: “To lower costs we need even more charge points to increase competition and a domestic cross pavement charging policy, to help bring down the cost per kWh.”

The group also supports designs that do not remove parking bays in high demand areas, aiming to support residents as more drivers switch to electric vehicles.

Councillor Simon Bull said electric cars are becoming more common as national policy phases out the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles and as vehicle range and design improve. He said: “There has been a good start, but we need more.”

He added that while electric vehicles are better for air quality and reduce reliance on petrol and diesel, they will not on their own solve parking and traffic pressures.
