Greens urge rooftop solar for new homes
Mandatory solar panels on new build homes are being urged by the BCP Green Party as part of a proposed rooftop solar strategy for the area.
In a statement, the party said it supports renewable energy expansion but believes the current balance is wrong, arguing that large numbers of rooftops remain unused while pressure on household energy bills continues to rise.
The Greens say a rooftop-first approach would help cut reliance on overseas energy markets, reduce costs for residents and businesses, and limit the role of large corporate intermediaries by keeping generation closer to where power is used.
Under the proposal, funding for solar panels would be prioritised on homes, schools and businesses, with specific measures to ensure people living in flats are not excluded, and with rooftop solar made mandatory on new developments where it is feasible.
Councillor Simon Bull said the call was not about opposing other renewable schemes, adding that large, community-owned energy projects remain important for meeting long-term demand.
He said rooftop solar can be installed quickly, delivers direct benefits to occupants and works particularly well when combined with batteries and heat pumps, helping households use more of the energy they generate.
The party says it believes rooftop solar should form the starting point of national and local energy policy rather than a secondary option.
