Christchurch groyne repairs planned

Permission is being sought to carry out repair work on damaged coastal groynes along the Christchurch coastline to maintain existing defences.

BCP Council has submitted an application to repair twenty six groynes between Mudeford Quay and Highcliffe Beach, with the work planned for spring next year to reduce the risk of infrastructure failure and keep the defences working as intended.

The proposals cover two groynes at Gundimore, ten at Avon Beach, six at Friars Cliff, and eight at Steamer Point and Highcliffe, following inspections that found missing sections, displaced rock armour, and areas where structures have settled into the clay seabed.

The planned work involves repositioning existing rocks and adding new Purbeck stone to bring each groyne back to its original height, a step intended to support natural beach replenishment and help maintain current shoreline conditions over time.

The repairs are described as temporary, with permanent upgrades expected once the long term FCERM Christchurch Bay and Harbour Strategy has been fully developed, funded, and scheduled for delivery.

The certificate of lawfulness application, which is used to confirm that the work can proceed without full planning permission, is open for consultation until twenty three January next year under planning reference P slash twenty five slash zero four seven three zero slash CLP.
