Pokesdown station lift work to start

Work to install new lifts at Pokesdown station is expected to begin in next year, following the completion of detailed design work over the past year.

Network Rail had originally planned to use a Vertical Line Beam lift system at the station, selecting it because it required less space and used less energy, which was seen as suitable for the constrained layout at Pokesdown.

However, the organisation has since identified issues with this type of lift at other locations, including concerns around safety, compliance with standards, and higher long term operational and maintenance costs than first expected.

As a result, Network Rail has decided to switch to a Machine Roomless Lift system, which is regarded as a more robust and sustainable solution over the long term and is already in use across other parts of the rail network.

The decision means the scheme now requires a redesign, but Network Rail expects this work to be completed by April 2026, allowing construction to still start later in the year as planned.

Bournemouth East MP Tom Hayes said online that while not everything is final, progress is being made and he will continue to push for action and closely monitor the project to ensure the lifts are delivered.
