Solent Meads golf course spared plans
Solent Meads Golf Course will not be included in plans to create new green spaces, following confirmation that proposals exclude the course area itself.
Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council announced in November that three sites were being considered to improve access to nature through a government backed Biodiversity Net Gain scheme.
The sites listed were Erlin Farm, Millhams Mead and Solent Meads, which prompted concern from residents, golfers and staff about the future of the course.
Campaigners gathered more than 8,000 signatures on a petition, with ward councillors and Hengistbury Head Residents Association seeking clarity over whether the golf course could close.
It has now been confirmed that Solent Meads outside of the golf course area may be included, while the existing course will not form part of the plans.
East Southbourne and Tuckton Councillor Bernadette Nanovo said it was welcome news, adding that she had pressed for clarity so Cabinet understood residents wanted the course to stay.
She said, “Solent Meads is part of our community, and people want it to stay”, reflecting comments made after meeting leaseholders and staff.
The current lease expires next year and must legally go to tender, allowing other operators to bid to run the golf and café facilities.
The council’s Cabinet will discuss the proposals on December 17, with a recommendation to approve improvements at Erlin Farm, Millhams Mead and parts of Solent Meads.
