Plan for Poole hotel site overturned

Planning permission for the redevelopment of the former Quay Thistle Hotel in Poole has been refused after councillors agreed the developer had not completed the required legal agreement.

The proposal was first approved in August 2023, subject to a signed section 106 agreement. This was intended to secure contributions for community improvements, including education, public transport and offsite open space. Documents stated that the total contribution sought from the developer was £655,948.

Councillors were told that the company behind the scheme went into liquidation after the hotel closed last year. Control of the business changed in January this year, and reminders to sign the agreement were issued in April, June, July and September. A final deadline of November 20 was set following a requested extension.

As the agreement remains unsigned, the application returned to the planning committee. Members held no discussion and voted unanimously to overturn the original approval and refuse the application.
