Work begins to improve Queen’s Park pond

Work has started on improvements to the Queen’s Park Wildlife Pond in Bournemouth after new funding was secured.

The pond relies on water run-off from the golf course rather than a spring, and was left dry last month after an extended spell of dry weather. Earlier in the year, work had been carried out to clear drainage ditches, remove plants and increase capacity, but the water levels continued to fall.

Councillor Alasdair Keddie confirmed funding has now been secured through a successful Community Infrastructure Levy bid to support the renewal and improvement of the pond.

Councillor Andy Hadley, cabinet member for climate response, environment and energy at BCP Council, said work is already under way to install a new viewing platform at the site. He explained this will give visitors the chance to get closer to nature once the project is complete.

He added that the scheme came about thanks to a joint effort between Queen’s Park and Charminster Neighbourhood Forum and Councillor Keddie, with BCP Council allocating the funding.

Councillor Hadley said this collaboration shows how local groups and the council can work together to bring lasting improvements to community spaces.
