Bournemouth Pier restoration works delayed

Repair works to Bournemouth Pier have been delayed by a year, but BCP Council has confirmed that the funding for the project remains secure.

The pier is set to benefit from almost half of the £19.9 million levelling up funding awarded to the council by the government for seafront projects. The works were originally scheduled to begin in the winter of last year, but the timetable has now been pushed back.

Anthony Rogers, Head of Seafront at BCP Council, said the tender process has been extended until the end of September 2025 following engagement with contractors. He added: “There is no change to the timeframe for the work to start.”

Once underway, the project will involve essential concrete repairs, installation of an impressed current cathodic protection system to prevent corrosion, and the removal of timber landing stages. These improvements are expected to give the pier an additional 25-year lifespan.

Despite the delay, the council has confirmed that the original levelling up funding allocation is unaffected and will still be used for this project.

The funding, awarded by the previous government, covers a series of works along the seafront. Other projects include stabilisation work on Bournemouth’s East Cliff and the construction of a new building for the Bournemouth Lifeguard Corps.

The pier remains one of the most recognisable landmarks on the seafront and the upcoming repairs are intended to secure its future for decades to come.
