Dorset councillors are being asked to consider a regulated e scooter rental trial in several towns.
A report going to the Place and Resources Overview Committee on 4 June sets out how a time limited and controlled trial could work in Corfe Mullen, Upton, Weymouth, Dorchester, Portland, and Chickerell.
Councillors from all parties will review the plans and give feedback before any final decision is taken by Cabinet at a later date, with approval also needed from the Department for Transport.
The trial could offer residents and visitors another way to make short local journeys, especially in places where walking or public transport may be difficult, or where people do not have access to a car.
Councillor Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, said the trial could offer “more transport choice” and support work to improve the environment.
He said e scooters could help reduce car use for short trips, support cleaner air and contribute to Dorset Council’s aim of reaching net zero as a council by 2035 and across the county by 2045.
If approved, the scheme would include speed limits, GPS controlled no ride zones, designated parking areas, operator monitoring and penalties for misuse. Riders would need a valid driving licence.
The report also recognises concerns around safety, enforcement and the impact on disabled people. The scheme would be monitored and could be changed or withdrawn if needed.
