Folk revival draws crowds to Poole

Traditional music is attracting new generations to concerts at Poole’s Lighthouse venue this year again.

A run of forthcoming performances at the Dorset arts centre features artists including Lisa O’Neill, Spiers and Boden, The Breath, Cerys Hafana and The Unthanks, reflecting sustained interest in folk and related styles among audiences of different ages.

Neil King, managing editor of Fatea and presenter of Folk Friday Radio show Across the Tracks, said careful programming that includes established names alongside emerging acts helps venues “look at a scene” and introduce audiences to artists they “should know”.

Music programmer John Blakeley added that centuries-old material is being rediscovered in the digital age, allowing younger musicians to reinterpret traditional sounds while attracting some of the most diverse crowds the venue has seen in recent years.

Performances run from 24 Feb through to 18 June, with highlights also including Nick Harper, Daoirí Farrell, Charlotte Carrivick Band and Sam Sweeney Trio, and tickets are available now via Lighthouse Poole.
