O2 switches on 5G standalone in Dorset

Faster and more reliable mobile connections are now available across parts of Dorset following the switch on of a next generation network.

More than 380,000 people across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Dorchester and Swanage are now covered by O2’s new 5G Standalone service, bringing improvements to speed, reliability and latency for residents, businesses and visitors moving around the county.

Unlike earlier versions of 5G, the standalone network is built entirely on new infrastructure rather than relying on existing 4G technology, helping to deliver a more consistent signal in areas that experience high demand throughout the year.

Coastal towns and rural destinations across Dorset place sustained pressure on mobile networks, particularly during busy periods, with reliable connectivity supporting navigation, safety, retail activity and transport links across inland communities and the coast.

Dr Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2, said the new network provides a clear upgrade for local people and businesses and supports future digital innovation across the region.

The Dorset rollout forms part of O2’s wider Mobile Transformation Programme, with more than 500 locations across the UK now live on the 5G Standalone network.
