Bournemouth University has applied for retrospective planning permission to allow public use of its Studland House and Bournemouth Gateway Building car parks alongside university use.
Both car parks have operated in this dual capacity since November 2019 and May 2021.
The university is seeking approval for public parking between 4pm and 7am on weekdays, and throughout the weekend.
The application also covers payment equipment already installed at the sites. Studland House car park offers 143 spaces, including six for disabled users, nine for motorcycles, and 78 for cycle storage. Bournemouth Gateway Building provides 103 spaces, seven for disabled users, four motorcycle bays, 110 cycle spaces, and an ambulance bay.
Despite being open to the public, usage has remained low, with an average of 20 vehicles per day. Bournemouth University aims to continue this arrangement for another five years, highlighting the potential to increase revenue and support its travel plans.
The consultation period for the planning application runs until September 5 under reference P/26/03736/FUL.
