The A31 is closed in both directions after a vehicle caught fire this evening.
Local firefighters were called to reports of the vehicle fire at 5.24pm and are working at the scene alongside colleagues from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service while the incident is dealt with.
The fire has since spread to the surrounding heathland and is now a major incident.
Hampshire & IOW fire service posted an update:
🚨 ROAD CLOSURE – A31 – VEHICLE FIRE
We are currently dealing with a vehicle fire on the A31, which has spread into the central reservation.
⛔ The A31 is currently closed while emergency crews deal with the incident.
⚠️ The M27 is also closed from Junction 2.
🚗 Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find an alternative route.
Please allow extra time for your journey, follow diversion signs and avoid the area where possible.
We will provide further updates when more information is available.

The fire service said crews were using 2 hose reels to tackle the blaze, adding that firefighters “remain at the scene dealing with the incident” as work continues to extinguish the fire on the A31.

The latest statement from the fire service says 2 hose reels are “currently being used to extinguish the fire”, with crews from both fire and rescue services continuing to deal with the incident.
