A Bournemouth man has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of rape and assault offences at Bournemouth Crown Court.
Liam Christopher Bassett, aged twenty-eight, was convicted of two counts of rape, assault by beating, and two additional offences following a trial.
The court heard that Bassett had been physically violent towards the victim, who was known to him, including punching her in the face and forcing himself upon her on more than one occasion when she refused to have sex with him.
After the victim reported the abuse to police, officers supported her throughout the investigation, which led to charges being brought against Bassett.
At the sentencing hearing, Bassett received a prison term of nine years and nine months.
Detective Constable Rose Pratt said the victim showed significant courage in coming forward and supporting the investigation and trial process.
She added that the evidence provided by the victim was crucial in securing the conviction and hoped it would encourage other victims to seek support and report offences.
